HFT or High Frequency Trading is a term for the usage of automated trading platforms that can generate a large number of orders across different instruments and exchanges in a small fraction of time. HFT uses speed and speed of execution and speed of reaction as an edge towards other participants.

Retail investors often see HFT as an unfair and unethical advantage of the large institutions.

HFT also adds liquidity to the market.
