Any advice on obtaining the quickest fills, minimizing latency/slippage in the bond futures market?

Are all trading platforms similar in this regard?

Purchase a dedicated server co-located at Aurora next to the exchange and your broker.

Thank you for your previous response Mike!

Does it make a big difference in minimizing slippage to have a dedicated server colocated at the exchange like you recommend? Any idea of how much does this would cost (ballpark)?

For a beginner like myself, what are the best (fastest) platform/broker to trade futures on (ZB/ES)? I have been reading that the combination of Interactive Brokers coupled with a NinjaTrader platform is ideal. Any thoughts on this or other suggestions?

Thanks!

Any discretionary retail customer using IB or NinjaTrader doesn't need a co-located server for latency or reduced slippage reasons. You might benefit from one if you want to remotely access your trading workspace from multiple locations (home, office) and/or your internet connection is unreliable (disconnects). But latency? No.

Cost of a VPS is around $60-80 a month, or dedicated co-lo you would need to buy the hardware ($3k) and then rent the rackspace (about $200/mo for 1U).

That's helpful Big Mike, thank you!

So... at first glance, it seems like the NinjaTrader platform/charting is more user-friendly and versatile.

However, it also seems that the IB "Smart routing" feature makes it a better (faster) choice to trade directly.

Finally, which data feed do I couple to either/both platform/s?

Hope you don't mind simplifying it down.

Thanks in advance!

Correct me if i am wrong but i don't think you need smart routing for the futures market its geared more towards the equities market where the product is traded on more than one exchange.

For data feed you can use Kinetick,IQFeed etc IB also provides data but i believe its not good enough if you are trading using a tick chart.

I agree with what Mike says.

If you a scalping you should look into a VPS as it can be more reliable than your home or office PC and internet connection, which is important if you are running ATM strategies.

I trade with NT from Australia and I was pleasantly surprised by the response time going live, I didnt notice any latency. Usually if I connect to a US server playing games a get 200ms latency and I can notice it. In terms of slippage from size, you wont have any problems with treasuries because they are super liquid.

Understanding yourself is just as important as understanding markets.
