Hello all, I was wanting to get some advice regarding NOT trading with my firewall and anti virus. I am trading the CL and getting bad fills on entry and when my ATM stategy executes. My broker tells me that it is because I am trading behind a firewall and Microsoft Security Essentials.. I have Spybot and Malwarebytes running as well. Disabling the protection makes me nervous as I am a security freak . I know there will be slippage, that's OK and I accept it, but it appears to have gotten worse since I switched to CQG data
How many of you are trading without security software? Any advice or opinions would be greatly appreciated.
Can you help answer these questions from other members on NexusFi?
If my broker told me that, I would probably switch brokers, but that is just me. I don't "buy it" in other words, but I've also never worked for a broker so I don't have concrete experience to say that it is nonsense.
I think much more probable is the execution engine is not using the same feed as the data engine. You said it yourself:
CQG vs Rithmic or Zen Fire, for instance. When I used to trade using IQfeed data and Zen Fire execution, my fill would not match exactly because IQfeed data is a tad slower than Zen Fire. Of course Zen Fire is not as good in other areas, but that is all covered in this thread about data feeds.
yes, if you don't do anything else beside trading on your machine then you don't need to run anything it's that simple. The machine had been trading live and wireless for 3 years without any problems. (back up daily just in case)
I use Avast anti-virus and have no problems.
A year ago I had some problems with very slow data but it was a problem with the modem, you don't need a very fast connection but it needs to handle a lot of small data coming in and my modem was not doing this. I changed it and everything is fine.
I heard that some anti-virus/firewalls are more heavy and can cause problems.
I also heard that Microsoft Security Essentials is good and Mike recomended Malwarebytes some time ago, try disabling Spybot or Malwarebytes (or both) and see if it gets better.

Interesting. I just purchased a new PC that will be exclusively for trading. Win7 x64 & NT7 and nothing else will be installed on it. So you're saying it's completely safe to disable the software firewall and all other security? The unprotected PC won't serve as an opening to attack to the other machines on my network? I imagine you keep file sharing and RDP all disabled? Too bad you can't uninstall Internet Explorer completely. I do plan on reformatting it and doing a clean install without all the crapware that Dell includes with their PCs.
I experimented with a dual-boot configuration for a while. I was impressed enough with the performance & reliability increase to justify a dedicated PC.
Yes, that is what I believe and is doing as well. Dont use the machine for anything but trading. It is safer than having a PC with all kind of anti virus/firewalls but at the same time you are downloading stuffs and visiting sites.
Thanks for all the responses folks. Mike, would you respond with a connection 101 for me? What do you mean by "I think much more probable is the execution engine is not using the same feed as the data engine." I wondered the same thing after I switched to CQG and it got worse.
Cory, I have a question for you as well. Right now I have 2 seperate PCs, one for trading and one for Skype, e-mail, and other stuff. I have used my trading PC for internet in the past. Both connect to a DSL modem via hard wire. Would my trading PC be vulnarable because I am connected to the internet w/ my other PC? And I know this may seem dumb but will my trading PC be vulnarable because I have used it for internet?
I wil try here to do an analysis and comparation on different data feeds and platforms to perfom studies involving bid/ask data, like comulative bid/ask difference or delta bars and footprint like.
Luke.
P.s. Is not a simple work, and take …
If you were to put two feeds next to each other, say for example Zen Fire and IQFeed (this is my personal experience), Zen Fire is slightly faster. So if your broker is executing on a Zen Fire backend, but your data is coming from somewhere else, they are not in perfect sync. I trade with this setup and it doesn't bother me, but I am aware of it. It may appear to be a "bad fill" when really it isn't.
I can't comment specifically about CQG data because I've not used it.
I do not believe that AMP is profiting by purposefully delaying data or fills. It is what it is. If you like CQG data better than Zen, just like I like IQfeed, then you have to simply make some trade offs. You should also cover the obvious like using limit orders instead of market orders where possible.
Thanks Mike, I was thinking it was something along those lines. I will need to have a chat w/ AMP on monday and see what they are using on the back end. BTW, anti virus are you using? My issue may be caused by Microsofts Security Essentials; I have had a few messages regarding my NT7 files located on my C drive.
