Need Advice: Looking for a good Platform- NT compatible?
I have developed a strategy and methodology that I really like. I have tried to trade with it, but Ninjatrader crashes, literally 4 times a day. I am really getting fed up with NT and and looking to switch platforms.
The crashes come from 1 of 2 things: trying to backtest or loading data on a chart, at the end of the day, NT says there is two problems: Something wrong with the strategy (doubt it though) and the "tick" data is too much (a lot of Out.of.Memory errors) which they say is fixed on NT 7.0, but I they tell me it is very risky to trade LIVE with 7.0 (I am guessing a ploy for me to wait until NT 7.0 is released-whenever that is!).
I have spoken to a few people here who doesn't use NinjaTrader any longer. In their experience, it is unreliable for just about anything.
I have tried to test automated strategies with Ninjatrader, but not without frequent crashes. Because I use range charts, I keep getting "Outofmemory" and other error messages concerning data.
I already have paid a programmer to do all these indicators, and strategies on NinjaTrader, though and it is a hard break-up. Does anyone know any RELIABLE platforms that I can switch all my indicators and strategy over to? Or is there and programmers on here that can program Ninjatrader over to a RELIABLE platform?
I am feeling bruised and frustrated right now: LOL
Can you help answer these questions from other members on NexusFi?
Did you talk with the people happy with NT7 ?
Yes, there are some !!!
It's always possible to find bugs, when you push it near the limits, but it's much more stable than NT 6.5. If you already have invested time and money on something coded for NinjaTrader, just use NT7, on the same computer with a simulation account, and you'll see if it's crashing or not (for having both version on the same machine, just rename one of the .exe).
And if you use 64 bits version, the memory limit is very very high, the odds of having memory problem with NT7 64bits is very low. I have had NT running backtests using more than 8Gb of memory, without any problem.
Having Out.of.Memory errors during big backtests is usual.
But having them during the run of the strategy itself is a bit strange.
Are you sure the strategy has been correctly wrote ?
I agree with Sam028... first, split your systems.. go 64b for the one doing the backtests and add more than enough memory to it (8-16GB) ... and run your strategy with the amount of data needed for generating the signals on a separate one with enough memory as well just in case.. PC's are cheap (by comparison) and if the strategy generates profitable signals, then in no time you would recover the costs...
I developed and backtested and traded lots of strategies in NT7 and when i compare it to the previous versions of NT it's a revolution. NT6.X had a memory leak, draw much more proccesor power, did not show you if the data in chart are loading or are not avayable, basic problems with opened windows etc..
In NT7 all this is fixed. I'm surprised that you have these problems in NT7.
Thanks for all your help! I have been told now, that Tick uses up much, much more CPU that minute charts, (I usually trade on range charts) which has helped cause the crashes.
Is it possible that I can get much better results with time charts (not as far as profit goes but as far as NT's performance)?
Lastly, I hear, almost unanimously, of everyone saying "Go to NT 7.0" but is that safe to trade LIVE with? I spoke to a NT representative and they said there are still risks involved with trading on NT 7.0 beta version and I am responsible for all risks since it is not an "officially released" version. Anyone trades live/ automated on NT 7.0 and havs problems or hiccups?
Well yes tick data will clearly be much more resource hungry, it is tick data! I only use tick data in any of my strategies and backtesting, but that is just me. Many are quite happy using only minute data. BTW, any exotic chart style such as Range, Renko, BetterRenko, Kase, etc etc etc are all going to use tick data.
