General info
Of interest to those considering multiple computer systems.
Options available - (a) constraints of sensible necessities and requirements or (b) constraints of liberal sensible necessities and requirements.

Redundancy Priorities:
  • for trading purposes ethernet cable connection is faster, more secure and vastly more reliable than wireless.
  • beside the use VPS options a second internet connection as emergency trading backup can also serve other uses including house backup as a whole and for family members working from home .
  • example - primary: 100Mb Fiber - no contract, terminate 1 month +/-£40/month.
  • example - secondary: different provider - slower connection - £19/month.
  • the primary and secondary connection can be controlled by smart link switch that auto switches to the secondary in event of loss of the primary. (not to be confused with smart switch hub)
Def: computer-pc-box-sytems used interchangeably.

Dual System Mouse-Keyboard Connect:
When I ran Linux boxes with Window boxes I used a commercial product that had a habit of acquiring new bugs with every other update. Though ongoing support is readily at hand it begins too look like the only selling point.

I currently do not run trading Linux with Windows boxes and have used +/-7 years Input Director (free - Windows only) which has been remarkably problem free.

A small problem exists of the cursor disappearing on the controller box if the cursor has focus on a controlled box during shutdown.
  • unplugging and plugging mouse or adding new mouse does not remedy.
  • an unsuitable work around remedy is to reboot the controlled box and reclaim the cursor then shut down the controlled box and shift the cursor like hell to another box before it gets trapped with the controlled box shutdown.
  • solution: the above problem has been overcome by delaying all controlled boxes shutdown by a few seconds allowing sufficient time to move the cursor to another box.
  • I have desktop reboot and shutdown shortcuts (see internet for how to do) and changed the Shortcut >> Target >> /t 0 to t/ 5. See Target: C:\Windows\System32\shutdown.exe /s /t 5
  • all computers must have the same update version - otherwise, no connect.

Screen Tools
I have a commercial product license but prefer Dual Monitot Tools (free) - lightweight, plain and direct to the point - https://dualmonitortool.sourceforge.net/

* Since Windows 11 Linux is back in favor. (for non esoteric needs Mint 21 will prove familiar). Cursor on 55 inch Monitors.
On 55 inch and larger screens the regular Windows cursor may be too small for some - see Big Red Cursor (free) or similar for alternative - https://www.bmyers.com/public/high_v...ty_cursors.cfm
Depending on requirements or liberal fancy TVs work exceptionally well as large screens - unless, of course, if of low quality. 4K and OEL preferable. In the UK - HD Ready - mmm.. no, not good. Full HD .... almost there, but not quite, may pass - depending.

Mouse DPI/CPI and Large Monitors (reference 55 inch 4K):
A problem with multiple large monitors is the standard mouse DPI/CPI is too low and thus too slow
  • for purposes of efficiency the cursor is required to fly at lightning speed across multiple system screens.
  • trying to find the ideal mouse can become a series of wasteful purchases - however, gaming - button programmable mice tend to fit the bill.
  • the programmable middle button comes in handy to control any trading platform feature that supports hot-keys.
  • side buttons if not required can be disabled.
  • if not hard core gamer the SteelSeries Riva 110 at 7,200 CPI, 240 IPS, 30g optical sensor or similar spec may fit the bill.
Mouse spec comparison site: https://mousespecs.org/compare/?ids=1453-592 and https://www.whatmouse.com/mouse-comparison/ and others.
Some may like it hot, some may like it cold - some my like an abundance of features, some may like minimalistic features. IMO - too many features are a distraction.

Total Silent PC
For those who demand total Quiet PC (totally fanless) - built according to component selection can be ordered at a number of UK & US vendors. Selfbuild offers greater component selection and customization. If not tech savvy and attempting this as a novice pay attention to component bottleneck issues. See here and other for Bottle Neck Calculator: https://pc-builds.com/bottleneck-calculator/.

SSD vs HDD
Quoting Passerby

Quoting
.... Add: Btw, stay away from ssd as it have limited write/read cycle. Or use it only to put OS, where you put your terminal should use conventional HDD for reability purpose. Take note that all of database servers don't use SSD for data reability. And if you ask, yes I use SSD in the pc where I cruch numbers but never use it to sore data(I use 128gb ssd from adata, boot to win 7 around 15s). I reccomend win 7 home edition, as you won't need the functionality of the higher price product and windows 8 isn't easy to use.

This is plainly not applicable and misleading re trading computers - trading computers are not database servers.
Recent SSD vs HDD Reliability Tests show SSD now more reliable than HDD: https://www.pcworld.com/article/1068808/testing-shows-ssds-are-now-more-reliable-than-hard-drives.html.

BTW: for trading and general work - go absolutely SSD - you will never look back ! In some cases the pc or laptop is too weak to make an impressive difference.
  • A key objective of any trading computer is SPEED.
  • The speed of SSD vs HDD is incomparable.
  • Use SSD for trading and old HDD for storage.
  • I have numerous SSDs since first appearing and regularly clone each working SSD (every 1 - 2 weeks) to an exact spec SSD for total hot-wap emergency backup - not one has died - cannot say that of HDD.

SSD Evolution and new Developments:

Going Smart
For added value in the trading room/office/environment add smart plugs and lights -

Note: an alternative to smart light bulbs is wall smart light switch - smart lights require replacement at the end of bulb life - a wall smart light switch is permanent. A matter of choice and which works best. Note: For smart light switches house wiring at the wall switch box must be taken into consideration on older UK and grade listed buildings. Due diligence required. These specific smart wall switches can be got from alternative online retailers if not available from the usual online lot. Smart plugs will be fine on both older and newer house builds.

Experience with Smart Home Hubs
  • Regarding the above we started out with one commercial product and soon became exasperated with its irritating, annoying and insistent (no off) verbosity of repeating every command as if one were mentally challenged and had to be reminded what one just said.
  • This is not welcome at three 3-am if your wife or a baby is awakened by this persistent repeating.
  • Some current users of said home hub claim this has been rectified with option to disable and other current users reports claim this problem still persists and purported fixes are not effective on their devises.
  • With no biases, either way, we dumped said commercial product for alternative that gives recognition of command as a low volume tone and I can only report - RELIEF -> DOMESTIC PEACE -> SANITY -> BLISS !
  • Use search term >> the home hub that repeats command or similar or the home hub that won't shut up !
