Sounds like that message itself is just malware/trojan to begin with. There is no such real Windows warning message to do with being "compromised" and unlikely McAfee would need to download anything to "fix" something. McAfee should quarantine and prevent the application from running, it wouldn't need to download something to do that.
I can't stand McAfee or Norton, so if it were me, I would uninstall that and install something else. I use NOD32 personally.
Also, make sure you don't use Internet Explorer. You need to use FireFox and keep it up-to-date with security patches (it will prompt to do so automatically).
I run my Windows XP on APPLE Mac (using VMware Fusion). To ensure stronger protection against viruses, malware, etc, I still have AVIRA Premium Security Suite (very good antivirus/spyware software).
As for browser, I use Safari browser (Windows version); the latest Version 4 is a beauty and it is free. Please, use it. IE sucks.
Another vote for NOD32. I have it on all the computers in my family and we've never had one virus or trojan. Well worth it and it's the fastest virus program there is.
We had a thunderstorm the other day and lightning struck somewhere nearby. I saw a spark shoot from my laptop and now it won't turn on. My desktop's internet hardware is broken. I had all equipment plugged into surge protectors with the exception of my modem and router, which I thought were connected to a surge protector. I wasn't on a wireless network. How do we protect ourselves from events like this besides checking to make sure no one's tampered with the surge protectors or going wireless? Are surge protectors a real safeguard?
I would recommend Mozy for backing up your computer but the jury is still out. My experience is that the backup takes FOREVER.
Probably the best surge protector you can have is to install a surge protector with a ground on your house. You can have this installed through your electric company or have a electrician come out to install. Definitely worth the money.
If an electrician does the job you'll pay for his time plus the parts. If the electric company does the job then they'll probably install it for free and charge you a monthly fee of something like $5 a month.
If you are in an area that has allot of lightening strikes then you might consider having a ground array installed with the surge protector.

fyi - All houses should already have a ground. Maybe there's an issue with the ground on your house. I'm not sure but I think the electric company can come and check it for free.
I highly recommend a UPS for your PC, Router, Cable Modem, and Monitor. Everything else should bypass the UPS such as Speakers with Amps and printers. Buy one big enough to handle the wattage of your PC power supply and other devices that might be connected.
If you live in an area where there is frequent lightning strikes ( here where I live in Florida -
alot!), you might want to look into replacing that $ 25-00 surge protector you bought at the
local hardware shop. Check this out https://www.zerosurge.com/ I know it seems expensive ( 2pt of profit) but well worth it.
It lets through no surge. Read up about the details of
how their product works compared to the usual sure protectors. Take it from a high voltage
electrical engineer - if you can afford it this might just be the way to go to get rid of surges.
