I have a chartbook set up for major indices, the Dow, S&P and Nasdaq but not sure I'm using the correct symbols. I'm using $DOWI for the Dow, $IUXX for the Nasdaq and SPX500 for the S&P 500. I don't think these are correct because I get volume for the SPX500 and $DOWI but not the $IUXX. Also the SPX500 updates price all night long like its a future contract.

Anyone know what symbols are best to use for these indices?

Thanks

It seems that you have taken the indexes and not the futures.

Which data service do you use?
With CQG, for example, the following symbols should be used for the futures.

Dow =

S&P =

NQ =

With other data providers, the symbols may differ slightly.

I believe those symbols are CFD's. You want Cash. Try inx, dji, and ixic or ndx for nasdaq 100
