Recommended Windows VPS for NinjaTrader 8. For $7-$12 /month. PiVPS? CheapWindowsVPS?
I’m starting to do a search for US location Windows VPS services with the best price-reliability ratio, to run NinjaTrader 8 and/or NinjaTrader 7, maybe both at the same time but depending about if the RAM size allows to run these 2 instances, and if not then only 1 single instance.
Actually, in a local Virtual Machine with Windows 10 I’m running ONLY NT8 with the next opened, all at the same time:
- 24 opened charts
- 2 strategies Enabled
- 1 Market Analyzer Window
- 1 Strategy Analyzer Window (actually not backtesting neither optimizing)
- 1 Strategy Performance Window All these are only taking around 2.2GB of RAM, and as reference, in the VPS I only need to have opened:
- 3 charts and 2 strategies if only running NT8
- Or only as a possibility and if RAM size allows to also run NT7, then also 8 charts and 2 strategies in NT7 simultaneously, but in the end I think maybe the best could be to have the NT7 instance in another separate VPS and done, even with another VPS company, just in extreme cases one gets down then the other could be up.
As the VPS is to run NinjaTrader for US Futures Trading (CME etc.) then the best situation could be they are located in NY or Chicago (in Chicago even better because is near to the Exchange)
Some persons have recommended me PiVPS that has “pure SSD” storage (prices here https://portal.pivps.com/store/windows-kvm-ssd-vps), and also searching in non-trading forums I see others alternatives but no personal reference for the up-time, connection stability or connection ping/lag. However some of them I’ve found with “good” monthly price are:
CheapWindowsVPS https://cheapwindowsvps.com/plans.php
- 2 Intel CPU Cores @2.0 GHZ+,
- 4 GB Guaranteed Memory
- 60 GB Solid State Drive Space*
- Unmetered Bandwidth
- Shared 1 Gbps Network Port
- Windows 10 Professional
- Remote Desktop or SSH Access
- For $9.00 /month
PiVPS https://portal.pivps.com/store/windows-kvm-ssd-vps
- 1vCPU Xeon E5
- 1.8 GB RAM
- 25 GB Pure SSD Storage
- 1,500GB Data Transfer Monthly
- 1Gbps Bandwidth Connection
- Instant Setup & Delivery
- Full Administrator Access Account
- FREE 1 Dedicated IPv4
- For $9.99 USD
As reference, the persons who recommended me PiVPS say that they are working with them since around 2019 running NT7 with 8 charts and 2 strategies Enabled at the same time.
But for example, If CheapWindowsVPS is stable and reliable then it seems to be a good alternative, with around twice computing power than PiVPS and with a similar monthly price
I know maybe some of you could recommend one of those solid companies with a VPS that cost $50-$80 per month but actually I’m starting in Sim-trading and can’t pay those high rates, even more when I have reference from at least 4 different persons about PiVPS and its VPS for a $9.99/month cost.
So please let me know about your experience with the low-cost VPS services you use (any other than the listed here), the prices per month, and of course, if someone here has used or is using any of these 3 services I mention here, then please provide your feedback with as much details as you want.
Thank you for any information, any detail and any alternative
I hope others members here can provide their experience using low-cost VPS because it will be very useful for many other users that don't any idea about what service to choose among a ton of them that are out there.
I think the key point is to have a VPS service that be stable and reliable with a certain background in which you put your trading platform knowing in the next week nothing strange will happen such a sudden and permanent shutdown of the service or similar problems.
@vsltradr
Have you RDP'd into it during different trading hours without any connectivity issues? Sometimes during peak cash-hours some VPS get laggy and RDP does not transmit as smoothly.
Thank you very much vsltradr for you reply, feedback and references
Well, checking the Contabo's website I can see they have a good starting price for their more basic VPS that has almost 3 times more resources than I actually need.
I see their lower price for a Windows VPS in US East would be $15.23 /month, what includes the next setup:
- CPU:........4 vCPU Cores
- RAM:........8 GB RAM
- Storage:...50 GB NVMe (or 200 GB SSD)
- Region:.....US East
- OS:..........Windows Server 2016 (only this cost $7.99 / month, so it would be perfect if they offered Windows 10 with a lower cost for the OS)
- Data Transfer: 32 TB Traffic - Unlimited Incoming
With the feedback here and in the NinjaTrader forum, Contabo seems to be a solid option and it would perfect if they could offer an smaller version of this VPS with for example 2 cores CPU, 2.5-4 GB RAM and Windows 10, or something similar to cost $10 /month that would perfectly fit with the minimal requirements I actually need, because for example I don't really need to have 8GB of RAM.
More alternatives are welcome members, please keep posting your feedback and experience with these and/or other VPS services
Thank you DanDaMan for your question, because this point about the Remote Desktop Connection stability will help to have a more complete and solid feedback about the experience with the low-cost Windows VPS service for Trading.
In the next replies other members could take this point into consideration too, please
In this field like in many others you'll get what you paid for.
Most super cheap VPS providers are renting space from large hosting providers (like OVH for example) and are massively overselling CPU resources, up to 1 for 100 (100 virtual cores on 1 physical core). So the user will be happy to see 4 CPU in his Windows task manager but its real computing power is in fact a fraction of it. I had an example recently, a 4 cores/8 GB cheap VPS where an empty NinjaTrader took 3 minutes to launch.
The support quality and the reliability are usually in line, and it's normal, you can't have a real support crew and a reliable datacenter for $10/mo.
So like always, if it's too good to be true it may not be true at all .
I haven't had any connectivity issues, nor noticed lag. Though I use it as a testing rig so I only remote in 2-3 times per day for 1-10 minutes at a time. It's possible that peak hours do slow and I haven't noticed. I'm using Windows 10's native Remote Desktop Connection. Smooth sailing so far.
futurenow, this is a great thread as I'm also looking for a low-cost VPS solution for trading CME futures. Of your 3 options, I see that only RouterHosting offers a Chicago-based data center.
vsltradr, your recommendation of Contabo looks attractive, though there is 18ms latency between their St. Louis data center and Chicago.
Finally, I appreciate sam028's warning about something too good to be true.
