I'll start this thread with some charts of the movie industry box office since I enjoy watching movies and the industry was hobbled this year due to current events. I wanted to look into this more because I had an opinion, but no real data to support it. I compared the two largest box offices in the world since they also had a radically different approach to said current events.

This graph is a heads up comparison of movies that aired in both countries. I gathered the data from TheNumbers and BoxOffice Mojo. It would've been nice to have a larger list of movies, but unfortunately there weren't anymore movies that had widespread release in both countries.
This graph adds up each weekend's box office with the previous weeks. It would be interesting to see if this trend continues into next year as Warner Bros has decided to also release all their 2021 movies on HBO Max in an effort to generate buzz around their streaming product. Disney has also put a number of their movies on Disney+ as well. The uncertainty around current events is changing the landscape as we know it and in this particular case helped contribute to the softer box office in the US towards the end of the year.
Streaming movies may very well become the norm in the future. An interesting tidbit and perhaps the groundwork for this new norm is this last relief bill strengthened copyright law in two ways: 1) making commercial websites that stream without licenses a felony and 2) establishing essentially a small-claims court for intellectual property claims.
