Hi all

Many of you won't be aware that Australia in in the middle of a 5-week Federal election campaign (we do it fast here in Oz). A few weeks ago Kevin Rudd was deposed in an internal party coup as Prime Minister and the previous Deputy PM Julia Gillard is now our first female Prime Minister. The election campaign is shaping up to be a very close race but Julia is proving herself to be a capable and competent aspirant to be the first elected female PM of Australia.

As you can imagine, deposing the previously very popular Kevin Rudd caused a huge controversy with many Labour voters confused as to who to vote for.

Just to add some additional flavour to the election, Kevin Rudd's daughter last week published her first novel, and it's about a male Australian Prime Minister being deposed by by the first female PM. Apparently she completed the book months before Rudd was deposed. Strange!

What is even more weird is that I am soon to publish my own first novel, a biotech thriller about cocaine countermeasures which is also about Australia's first female Prime Minister. As it happens I started writing this 10 years ago and finished it about a year ago.

The election is on 21 August 2010.

Cheers,
Nano

Hi Nano (and fellow Kiwi), nothing strange about it in my view. I was living in Sydney when Kevin Rudd was elected and there was many an article at the time saying the backroom power brokers of the Labour party were only putting Rudd up as their leader as they knew he was the only one with a chance to get them elected, but those articles warned Rudd to watch his back as their (the back room power brokers - Bill Shorten etc) real agenda was to get Julia to take over as they see her as more sympathetic and supportive of true Labour party values etc.

It will be a sorry day in Australia if she gets elected. Kevin Rudd was effectively elected by the people and then for a few (in the back office of Labour) to be able to dump the person who the people voted for (even when the country never even had a recession) is incredible. She recks of lack of integrity (well I guess what poli doesn't) and can't be trusted.

Disclosure of interest: Live in NZ now and would never vote Labour in either country

Hi Steve

Your sentiments on the way Gillard toppled Rudd are commonly held here and Tony Abbott, the Leader of the Opposition (Liberal Party) gained significant traction in the polls as a result. However, it appears Gillard is now ahead in the polls, but it is still going to be an interesting and close election.

Yes I'm a Kiwi and proud of it (go the AB's) and have lived and voted in Oz for over 30 years now.

My disclosure: I am normally a labor voter, but I had become disillusioned with Kevin Rudd, which may have forced me to swing to another party if he stayed on as PM. IMHO Julia Gillard is now performing well as labor leader after a less than auspicious start.

Nano
