Hello,

I plan to buy a second laptop soon. I was wondering if there would be a memory limit beyond which Ninja won't find any use.
I was planning to buy 3gb but I could add up to 6gb. To your knowledge, what is recommended for backtesting/programming/trading ?

i am not shure but i think i remember something with : "NT 7 + Win 32bit is still limited to 1,5 GB-RAM-usage"
that i remeber from a webinar for NT7 - but not 100% shure - maybew someone can confirm this.

so this would mean only 64Bit stuff will make more RAM-usage possible for NT7 .

but also its clear that NT7 will not uses that much RAM as NT6,5 did and will ahndle RAM much smarter - cause NT6,5 was a bit "out of control" in its RAM-handling.

so even if NT7 32 bit is limited to 1,5 GB-RAM it will need much less than this i think.

so your decision will be related to the OS you plan to use.

If you plan on optimizing strategies, get as much RAM as you can afford.

Go for 6GB if you can and if that's your hardware limit. Run Win7 Pro, and you get a a free XP VM from Microsoft you can run in background. You can assign it 2-3 Gigs of RAM, let it do backtests and things while you develop on the main installation. That basically alows you TWO NT installations on one machine.

thank you

here is the vague reply from Ninja

With Windows 7 the minimum requirement is 2 GB of RAM. I have provided a link below that goes over Minimum PC Requirements.

.NET Framework has a cap of 2 GB however the more memory the better as this will help the overall performance of your PC when running multiple programs.

You will need Windows 7 x64.

Both NT7 32-bit and NT7 64-bit have been optimized greatly over NT65 in terms of memory usage, it is likely to not be a real problem. I tested NT7 32-bit in early betas and was able to optimize two years of tick data without running out of memory. Still, the 64-bit version will give you more headroom, but keep in mind any DLL indicator versions, as well as some data feeds like Zen Fire, don't work in 64-bit without updates or in some cases not at all.

For ZF feed, which still 32-bit only, the idea is to:
- get the tick data using NT7 32-bit (a simple backtest)
- optimize the strategy using NT7 64-bit (it will use the data downloaded previously by the 32 bit version, no need to be connected then).
With the 64-bit version, and large backtests optimization, I saw NT7 64 using more than 7 Gb, and give some reliable results.
