Trades in NT are split up and not aggregated - Any solutions or other software?
The final piece of my daily journaling approach is the actual logging of my trades. Ideally, I take <=5 trades per day, but some days that does not happen.
To my knowledge, there is no work-around in NT 8 for this. It's such an obvious flaw that one would think they could easily fix. I found a thread from 2017 while looking for a solution to this issue a year or two ago.
They are aware of the issue. The trades report was different in NT7 and you could group trades by entry, but they had some complaints. Instead of making grouping optional they took it out altogether. Makes no sense to me.
If you don't want to pay for a journaling service, excel is the easiest way to go. You can right click and export the whole table. I use Jigsaw which has journaling software included in the subscription. It properly groups trades and makes it easy to label by trade type so you can track metrics based on setup. I'm sure there are other services out there that do the same thing, but I don't know them by name or have any experience with them.
Wish I had a legit solution for you. It's ridiculous that they haven't fixed this issue, in my opinion. Good luck!
Thank you for your detailed response. Makes no sense to me either.
Quite frankly, I'm starting to lose a bit patience with NT. In particular NT8 (seems like NT7 was a better platform in many ways).
Maybe I'll try Jigsaw. Good suggestion. Where does Jigsaw get the trade data? Is it exported from NT?
Currently, I'm exporting data to Excel anyway and 'massaging' the data bit anyway. But grouping trades needs to be done manually, right?
Another annoyance to me is the MFE/MAE statistics. Being an ES day trader, I'd like to track points against me/in my favour. Thus, I think it should be (or at least be possible as an option/additional metric) to view on a per contract basis.
This is one of the things I'm calculating manually in Excel.
There is probably a way to program excel to compile those "separate" trades into a single unit, but I don't know how to do it. I would think it should be possible to setup a spreadsheet to where you can copy and paste the spreadsheet from ninja to excel and have it compile the trades based on entry time and price.
Regarding Jigsaw, it's linked to ninjatrader and uses the same data feed so it automatically reports each trade. I think by default it gives you a notification through windows as soon as you enter or close a trade that you can click on to immediately categorize or comment on the trade, which is handy.
The only negative thing I have to say about the journaling aspect is that getting it to account for commissions is a little wonky. You can do it, but it's not super intuitive.
Jigsaw is a great DOM. I'd recommend trying it out if you execute from the ladder. You used to be able to use ninja's ATM strategies with Jigsaw in an older version, but I think they may have done away with that when they implemented their own custom strategy builder. I don't know if I'd subscribe just for the journaling, but it's a good value to me otherwise.
I just remembered another service that Lance Beggs recommends. (@Lancebeggs on twitter)
Looks like it's a one-time purchase but you still have to manually type your entry and exit. I don't have any experience with it but it might be useful. Could save you the headache of fussing with excel or paying for a DOM that you may not need.
If the trade performance window isn't showing MAE/MFA on the window you want, try right clicking the table and go to "properties." You can select which metrics you want in the trades, analysis, executions windows, etc.
