I have never used TOS. I trade futures only. I was watching a webinar last night from 2015 (I think) from ShadowTrader about market internals and he was using TOS.
My questions are:
(1) with their $50 minimum to open an account does that include live, real time futures data across different things (ES, Eurex stuff like DAX, $TICK, S&P 500 cash, etc)?
(2) Does TOS have a watchlist feature?
(3) Does anyone hear just use TOS for the purpose of charts, data, but execute on Jigsaw or another DOM software?
Can you help answer these questions from other members on NexusFi?
1) Their website says there is no minimum to open an account. Market data access is pretty comprehensive. You get stocks, futures, options, indices, internals, and fx. There are no market data fees, which is nice, but their commissions are higher than others.
2) Yes.
3) I currently chart on TOS and execute on NT. I tried to make the full transition to NT due to the lower commissions, but I found the TOS charting style to more intuitive and user friendly.
If you have questions about TOS, I would encourage you to call their customer support, which is very good. You can also open a paper trading account that will give you delayed data, if you want to get a feel for their platform.
You can open a TOS account without funding but the data is delayed. I called them and asked them if they could give me real-time data for practicing on "paper".
One word of caution though. Their paper money mode is a bit misleading since you automatically get filled when price touches your order (unlike true trading where you are sitting in a queue and may not get filled when your order price level is reached). For live trading I would imagine you could use TOS charting with any other system to fill (I did use it with demo NT and am currently using it as well as Sierra Charts with Infinity Futures.)
Also, their lookback mode (for practicing when market hours are closed) is pretty horrible as I find the DOM prices do not coincide with the chart pricing rendering it useless.
if you are going to use someone "just for charts" @NinjaTrader is simply the best, most flexible chart platform available, period. I wish I was using them still....the best.
The ToS DOM is pretty good and it's reliable, but NT is better for DOM IMO.
I do not know about any minimums for anything, sorry. TD Ameritrade Operations Dept is 800-669-3900
Everything on your list except Eurex products. no ICE products. some of the thinner commodity products are no longer available, but unless you're a farmer, who cares? Everything is included in commish, including a static DOM. (static being preferable to dynamic, imo)
Nope. I've not had many execution problems with TOS in the past few years. TDA has done a good job with the backroom. Be aware that TOS charts are generated in their backroom while NT8 are generated on your local machine. Also, you'll have to carry the maintenance margin at TOS.
If you want to trade options, TOS execution is excellent.
If you use drawings to trade, then TOS is far superior to NT8 when it comes to workload. For this reason, I use TOS 95% of the time.
Is this possible?
Currently the scan screen highest limit is 2000.
I am building a case with TdA to get the sectors and industry columns populated.
The study will enable users to scan the universe and watch the rise and fall of commodities, stocks and etfs to see demand contracts shifting in favor or against world events.
Of course this is a large study. It has to be.
The idea is to give the user a view of demands and excesses across the planet.
I believe everybody reading this should see the value.
Due to the large number of records the scan could be used at the lowest schedule of 'Per day' runs. This would be sufficient for global analysis.
Thanks in advance for any input. I have also entered a support request to TdA but thought I would post this thought provoking request here for the benefit of Futures.io participants.
Also I assumed this thread was open for other questions. Sorry if this is a highjack.
I'm not sure on $50 minimum. But having had ToS for a long time, they do have real-time mode for all their data available. Often if you have a decent account like a number of $k such as an investment account sitting there, you can call them up and request for real-time for both live and sim if you're still on the delayed mode.
yes, sometimes I put up TOS for yearly or monthly charts on certain instruments where a nt broker or feed doesn't provide it. I don't use Jigsaw or really use DOM though. Their futures fees/commissions and margins are horrible compared to others though from what I've heard. I tried it once and quit it soon. Mainly passable for those who trade higher time frame and can maintain margin requirement overnight, imo.
