Hi,
I have experience with various other trading plateform and consider moving to MC.net because of C#, portofolio trader, and what seems to be robust live trading capabilities. My intent is to use programming to build backtest and automated systems.

However I have some concerns:

Is this platform actively supported? Looking at their forum, the Easylanguage version has like 12k posts, the .net only 2k.
Not much activity there, unlink forums like the official NT one where you get answer from staff within hours if not minutes even on programming question.

Also I read that the code in their indicators is poorly commented.
I tried to download their programming chm file but could only display the menu on the left, clicking on the items didn't display anything in the content window.

I would hate going into a plateform, stumbling upon bugs that take ages to be fixed, or have various questions and huge delays in answers.

What's your experience with MC.NET in the context of a new programming user that needs to find quick solution when stumbling upon inevitable roadblocks when getting into a new plateform?

Is this platform actively supported?

Yes, there are major feature releases about once a year, preceded by multiple beta releases and succeeded by maintenance updates. New data feeds are supported, new chart types added, and improvements in the portfolio trading and autotrading features.

Haven't utilized this, but Multicharts support and engineering staff run a daily live chat, where registered users can get immediate support. Support staff also respond within a day or sooner to email questions which can be submitted via multicharts.com. Users can also call the company directly via phone. I have noticed that the staff are always professional, patient, and very knowledgeable about the inner workings of Multicharts.

Sparsely commented but in my view, the code is mostly self explanatory.

Not sure, it worked for me and I have also used a reader on a Mac to view the CHM help file.

Everyone's experience is different, I have not stumbled onto bugs in the platform. If you report a bug with enough data to reproduce it, via the forum or via the live chat, the staff will take a look at it. IMHO they are on top of critical bugs in the platform relating to functionality. The highest priority issues seem to relate to data feed changes or edge cases in features.

What's your experience with MC.NET in the context of a new programming user that needs to find quick solution when stumbling upon inevitable roadblocks when getting into a new plateform?

It was a lot of learning based on searching google for keywords I was interested in on multicharts forum and Multicharts Wiki. I usually ended up opening a lot of browser tabs to sift through information. I would not reccommend the search box on the forum itself. There are also some FAQs and lots of sample code, and these are also nearly buried within the forum -- unless you are effective at google searches. I would recommend the site https://www.tradingcode.net as a site that is independent of MC but has referenced a lot of harder to find information (not just for MC.NET but other platforms as well.)

The MC.NET documentation leaves a lot to be desired, it is too scattered and under-developed, as are parts of the Multicharts UI. The user experience should really be improved, it would make the product so much better. It still relies on very old Windows interface conventions that require a lot of fiddling and clicking. There are a lot of rough edges in C# development that you just have to roll with.

All in all though, I have found MC.NET to be a high-performing piece of software with numerous useful features for trading discretionarily or automated. Very much worth the investment.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Thanks for the detailed answer, exactly what I was hoping for.
I came to the same conclusion: great software but documentation not up to it.

It's too bad they don't realize how important documentation is.

I finally was able to read the chm file.... tons of functions without even an explanation of what it does, what it returns....
Still an appealing piece of software.

brakkar,

seeing from your profile that you are using Tradestation it might make sense to compare MC and MC.NET for you as you might be able to accomplish everything you have in mind with regular MC already. This would likely make the transition a lot smoother for you.

Regards,

ABCTG

Hi just my 2 cents here.

I come from a Metatrader 4 world, and the switch to MultiCharts.NET has been quite hard.

For example:
-there are not enough forums on MC.NET
-lack of free signals and indicators
-too much C# oriented. Lack of simple methods to access basic information such as Account balance, Closed trades
-too much theory in the documentation, no practical examples;

Whereas in MT4 there's a world of help, free stuff and available forums.

Rgds
JohnJo.
