hi all,
once again we had an internal discussion about the forum here + how it should be in the future, it started when mike said :
i underestimated the amoutn of people that won't post in the forum. many many lurkers, very few posters. everyone is scared or doesn't know how to use a computer i guess

--> please read todays chat beginning around 2.45 PM US-time (correct me if the time is not right)

There are some ideas around but the moderators dont want to discus this alone because you - the active posting members - are the base of this here - and without you this place wouldnt exist like that !

so tell us what you think about !

some thoughts :

how to do it that we are all serious user here - posting / sharing / creating
and how to arrange it that not 80% are lurkers only?

how to create an area to feel kind of "shure" + without thinking that most people only wanna grab the new indicators / ideas / knowledge.

how to filter new members in this context.

some ideas :

closing the forum right now - all active members stay active mambers
all members without sensemaking postings stay "chat-only + forum-headline-only" members (so they have no posibility to grab all the stuff)

becomming a new active member with full forum-abilitys via

1 - payment
2 - personal invitations from active members
3 - .......

payments :
iE 200,- $ for a year -- + full forum-ability right now -- so the guys show that our stuff is worth it
if they are getting activ - they stay active -- if they are just lurgers -- they got to pay again next year - or go back to passiv (chat+headline only-members)
through paid lurging our comunity gets some money to pay the server + services (like gotomeeting-sessions, hire coders for new chat-functions etc )

This is just a first personal brainstorm - feel free to add ideas - pull me into pieces or to share your thoughts about this

Hi,
payment has to be completely voluntary as it is now. Active users are the ones using forum ideas, "lurkers" are not using this stuff, otherwise they would communicate somehow. I am as you call "lurker" too, my trading is discretionary and with few standard indicators, but I liked the idea of such a free forum and made donation to support idea of FREE FORUM. If you decide to kick me out, well let be it...life is still good

I guess you could call me a lurker on this forum too.

I have posted one or two posts, but I haven't seen any discussion where I felt I could contribute much.

I have promised to add ATM strategy functionality to the Sharky strat, but as Sharky said it was going to be reworked, there has been no point in doing that yet.

I can contribute to this thread though because what you are experiencing is what almost all forums see - 80% "lurkers" and 20% active participants.

Just because someone is not posting does not prevent them telling their friends about the forum, blogging about it and maybe posting links to it in other forums and in blog comments.

Search engines love high traffic sites and sites with rapidly changing content, particularly if there are a lot of relevant "earned", not paid for, inbound links.

If you make this forum private, you will kill it bit by bit as the content will dry up, new users will not find it from search engine results and blogs, and there will be less viral marketing, which is priceless.

There, I have contributed because I know a lot about internet marketing (its my day job). You have a great resource here that will do extremely well by keeping it open.

David

Another idea may be to create an 'exclusive' section which has a low monthly fee, like the Forex-TSD forum for MetaTrader.

They offer a free 10 day trial and then its $10/month for access, most of their discussion goes on in the public forums but the more advanced indicators and strategies are only posted in their elite section. It seems to work well for them.

The question is how to draw these "lurkers" out, so that they become participants in the forum, and they help to draw more people out, and etc etc etc.

"Closing the forum" may be misinterpreted. What max means is making it so that the downloads and other content are not available until you participate. The forum will never actually close. It's just a thought based on how many people currently register only to download an indicator, and then never participate.

Participation is key to any forum. This forum in particular, as our entire purpose of being is to build a unique community of helping each other. You can go to the other forums if you want flame wars and want to read thread after thread of people trying nothing more than to be "right" instead of helping people.

No one is going to be kicked out.

Payment is not the motivation behind this either.

The motivation for me is to draw out the lurkers and get them to participate, it has nothing to do with money. Max was discussing the possibility of a subscription model to show that people are serious, but I am not convinced of this model because too many people get turned off by it from the beginning and never even give the forum a chance. It also makes it seem like my job here is to run a commercial product, and that is not at all the case. My job here is to run an entity that helps fellow traders using the Pay It Forward mentality.

There is an exclusive VIP section now for VIP members. To become a VIP member, you need to donate. I have toyed with a monthly model but found it too restrictive (too many people don't want that).

Coincidentally, the name of the VIP section is "The Elite Circle". The origin of the name is explained within.

Mike,
I ran a vBulletin board for 5 years with 8K+ members. I would say less than 1% were active posters but my monthly page views were always around 10M.

You're not going to make lurkers into posters no matter what you do and quite frankly I wouldn't want to due to the fact they would not be contributing relevant content.

Mike, I am a Lurker simply because I am not trading literate enough to actually add anything of any value to the forums. My trading experience being limited I read almost all of the posts on most of the threads. Am I here to simply download and run ? I don't see it that way as I try to glean any insights from the posters that I would not otherwise have. And no as yet I have not downloaded any indicators yet.
However would I agree to pay a monthly membership for the privilidge of acccessing this forum ?.....sure I would, will I donate when I start trading after the summer ?......yes again. But will I be able to actively participate in the forum ?.......probably not for reasons given.
I think this is a great site and certainly hope you are able to keep it active.

Regards Paul.

job well done, Max-td. you drawn some lurker out. ;-)
anyway, do you want people water down the forum or want more useful info.? do you want people ask question was answer couple pages ago and keep pm you ask you why you did not return their pm?
I can't tell you what's best way. But I think balance is always the key.
