Hello all,

I downloaded NT and used their 1 month free trial for sim with live data feed. my subscription expired and I would like to renew. If I lease for 3 months for $180, will I be able to get live data feed and trade on sim exactly like when I was on the free trial? I'm having a hard time getting a direct answer to this question from a ninjatrader broker. Any help?

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

you can use Ninjatrader on sim as long as you like without cost - you only have to pay them if you want to do your execution on this platform. Normally you will have to pay for a realtime datafeed as long as you do not have a brokerage account that will provide that for you. Hope that helps.

Regards,
Erik

Thank you. Mainly, I'd just like to be able to sim trade on the CL, ES, NQ, and maybe a little forex. So, would I just need to buy a seperate data feed package plus the $180 for 3 months? Or if I buy the data feed would I be able to actually trade in real time? I'd prefer NT answer these questions instead of starting a thread, but it seems theyre pushing more for me to open an actual live account and Im nowhere near ready for that. I would just like to be able to do everything I would be able to do with a live account, but with fake money. I'd like to know how exactly to go about this because their answers just seem vague and I dont want to pay any more than I need to for what I would like to do.

Thanks again.

You DO need a data feed to display charts and do simulated or live trading (realtime data if you want to trade live markets - sim trading should work on delayed data but have not tried yet). You DO NOT need to lease or buy Ninjatrader software unless you want to trade a live account (later when you have a live account you can do your execution on your brokers platform and still use free Ninjatrader for your analysis).

To get free Ninjatrader - maybe you have already done that: on ninjatrader.com put your email in the box and click "Download Now. FREE to use" - Install the file you downloaded.

To get datafeed: open Ninjatrader and click in the "Tools" menue on "account connections". Click on "Add.." and then "Next". Open the dropdownlist "Provider:". You will see a list of all possible datafeed providers, some are free like Yahoo and Google but I am not aware of a free realtime datafeed for futures because of the exchange fees. I think you can hook it up on a FXCM demo account for free FOREX data but for futures a good choice will be kinetick.com - they are one of the cheapest and have reliable data. If you want to use your datafeed with other software packages than Ninjatrader then you may choose iqfeed.net - they are a little bit more expensive but use is not limited to Ninjatrader. Be prepared to pay between $55 and $200 per month for data and exchange fees. As I said earlier the only way to get data really cheap or for free is to open up a trading account - you can still trade on sim even if you have a live account :-) but you have to fund the account - most futures brokers need a minimum of $2000 to open an account. But feel free to shop around on the internet with the providers from the list in Ninjatrader and give us a post here if you find a great provider! Hope that helps.

  • NinjaTrader is completely FREE excluding live trades executed through a broker
  • If you want to simulate, you need a data feed
  • You can opt for a free data trial (there are limitations on length and frequency) from our website OR
  • You can purchase a subscription to a market data service, Kinetick.com is what we recommend as that is our own service
