I'm in the market for a new trading laptop. I currently run a Surface Pro 2 (i5, 8GB, 256SSD) for both trading and school purposes. My major is engineering--common softwares include MATLAB, Mathematica, Google Chrome, very occasional Solidworks, and Ninjatrader. I am ready to upgrade laptops. My Pro 2 runs hot and burns through what should be a long battery life in a short period of time. Just this morning--after a full night's charge--it died after just over an hour of usage with power saving methods turned on. Keep in mind, this usage was not computationally intensive trading software. I was debugging some C++ code via Chrome, which should not have drained as much power as it did.
I'm sick of a slow Ninjatrader and having to pick and choose what programs I run. I currently have 3 Chrome tabs running, 3 Ninjatrader charts running (3 instances of GomiMP, one of VolumeLadderMetroEdition), and Adobe Reader as well. At the moment, my usage is stable: 32% RAM, 30% CPU. Strangely enough, I experience spikes at odd times which have actually crashed my computer three times over the last four months.
I believe that I want an i7, 16GB , and at least 500 GB SSD. So, I've come down to three different options that I would love to hear some input on.
3). The possible future release of a Surface Pro 4. However, the reason I'm leaning away from this option is that I would have to purchase a new keyboard and docking station for it, as the new model will probably not be back compatible with the Pro 2.
Comments? Thoughts? I'm looking forward to hearing all of the forum's input.
Happy Friday,

I use a Lenovo Thinkpad W520 i7, 16 gb ram with a docking station and 3 external monitors as my main trading computer. It must be around 4 years old now but it has served me well.
Both are nice laptops. The Thinkpad uses slightly newer technology and the price is better. Only downside could potentially be the CPU - Intel Core i7 5500U vs 4720HQ. I have used neither CPU so can't comment on how accurate the comparison is.
Based on reviews the Thinkpad is generally better built than the Y50 - if I needed to choose I would go with the Thinkpad.
Odd that your Surface Pro runs so hot and that it crashes. My Ivy Bridge i5-3230M (Dell Latitude) handles similar tasks ok and never crashes. Either something is wrong hardware wise, or the cooling design is not able to dissipate the heat effectively.
@DavidHP sounds like you have a Nice setup.....i believe Razer will be Producing this New Laptop called "Valerie"
sometime in the first part of 2017, but i have no info on dates.
This will be an Expensive Laptop, but if i were to travel much it would be Awesome to have.
Currently I have surface pro 4.There are some problems:
1) the fonts of indicators are very small so the words can't be shown properly.
2) when I am running 28 charts MT4 is very slow.
Any good recommendations for laptop which can resolve these problems?
