Any one ever trade on a Surface Pro? I dont know much about them but Ive heard they can run all windows programs just like a laptop. All I need to run is OEC for execution and Sierra Chart. I only trade 1 product. I need something very small and compact I can constantly be taking on and off a table or just trade with it in my lap. Anyone see a problem with doing this from a Surface Pro? Or maybe suggestions on a laptop that might fit this.

I've had a Surface Pro 2 and currently have a Surface Pro 3. It's a fantastic device. However, I would suggest waiting another month and buying the Surface Pro 4 at the end of October.

My only computer is a Surface Pro 2. I use it to run ThinkorSwim and NT7, though never simultaneously. It works well for some engineering softwares like MATLAB, struggles with Solidworks, and has crashed a couple of times when I initiated the gomi market footprint software. The surface has worked well for me as a main trading computer. My only regret is that I didn't have the foresight to assign my trading software to one standalone computer.

Even running Chrome and NT7 is almost too RAM intensive for the system. I'm considering purchasing a SP3 or 4 in the fall to use as my trading computer.

If you don't need an incredibly powerful system, I'd say that the Surface Pro line isn't a bad option.

How much memory does yours have? I have 8GB on my Surface Pro 3 and have never had any problem with anything crashing.

I'm operating with 8GB as well on the Pro2 and an i5 processor. To be entirely honest, I have no idea why it crashed. I had three or four Gomi charts updating in real time (thankfully it was overnight, not during the trading session) as well as a few Chrome pages up with email and the like, and I believe TOS too. I was running at something obscene like 7.2/8 GB, and it conked out soon thereafter.

I'm still at a loss as to why that happened. It was only the once. Right now, I have two NT charts running, four Chrome tabs open, and my memory consumption is sitting at 2.6/7.9GB (33%).

After experiencing the first crash, I started considering purchasing a dedicated powerful computer primarily for trading software, but something that could also tackle Matlab and some rudimentary CFD (computational fluid dynaimcs) software without flinching. I'm looking at the new Surface Pro 3, the probable release of the 4, and other solutions like ThinkPads right now.

The 4 will be released very shortly, best to wait for it.

I owned a 2 before upgrading to the 3, the 3 is 100% better. The 4 will continue the tradition, be lighter, faster, but no change in form factor.

FINALLY...

I have been following the release rumors for the new Surface Pro 4 for months.
Today they finally released it.

Sad to say I will not be getting one.
Although it looks like a fantastic device and I would love to have a new Surface Pro 4...

But I had to make a tough choice.

After seeing the new Surface Book I ordered it with the top specs.
I would rather have the 1TB drive but it was not available as and option.
But I think 512 will be enough for now

Now if I can just keep my excitement under control until it ships on Oct 26.
