Hi all, newish swing trader, stocks, mean reversion - just saying hi
I'm just saying "hi" making my first post here. I'm a newish swing trader in stocks, and have been trading a mean reversion system for a few months that I'd been working on for a year or so with amibroker.
I enjoy the model building quite a bit, as well as things I'm learning about human behavior. If there are particular forums I should frequent here I appreciate the tip. I hope to be able to contribute where I can, but as I'm new to swing trading I probably should do more listening at this point unless it's about struggles of starting out.
Can you help answer these questions from other members on NexusFi?
No platform I don't guess in the sense that most people use it. I simply place trades primarily through Interactive Brokers at market open and close. Backtesting and system development is done with Amibroker.
It's good for the short term mean reversion stuff that I'm doing. I just build end of day data models so I don't do anything fancy, and the programming makes sense to me now. I'm not a natural programmer, so I had to experiment for a long time to really understand. Howard Bandy's books were helpful in that regard. It got easier for me after I built my "include" library up some (external functions) so I could more easily work with some of the ideas I was interested in. I did struggle with it some initially - was not without its frustrations - I guess like any language where you just don't "get it" or understand what the bug might be in the code - but I'm more comfortable with it now. Figuring out how to setup my initial databases w/ ticker, names, sector, industry was frustrating until I got my process built out, and files setup.
The ease of working with the array type language is really nice. Initially I was programming looping because that is just how my mind was working - but the array language is really nice once it clicks what's happening. It's like column calculations in excel.
I see you primarily use Tradestation. Do you like it? I haven't worked with Trade Station but had thought about opening an account to work some with easylanguage and see what it does. I like the turn-key automated trading aspect should I want to move that direction. But I'm also kindof hesitant to try something different because, like I say, I'm not a natural programming so it often comes more slowly to me. I'd think Tradestation would be excellent for backtesting given their data that controls for survivorship bias.
What language does amibroker use? I ask because im not a programmer either, so something a little easier would be nice. I have Tradestation now, but I am fed up with it. Ive been asking around on different forums for the past couple of days and Ive heard good things about Ninjatrader and Trade Navigator, and I think they both have trial offers. I just now got into work and am probably going to download both of them and see if anything tickles my fancy.
It has it's own language afaik. You can check the web for samples of code, but it's fairly straightforward for what I do (once I learned the program calls I needed). I am hobbyist - not professional programmer - so nothing too complicated.
I primarily use TradeStation for the platform and broker. For what it's worth they've done a pretty good job answering the phone if I have a question about easy language or the platform in general. The data feed is quite good, better than most others I tried. They lost a few points with me lately as they have done some platform updates which include a fair amount of bugs but at least they are trying to add new functions.
I am posting here bcoz, traders have experienced about mean reversion trading... If anyone could help me... Basically what prices action statistics do we need to remember while trading Mean Reversion Strategy
