Can any recommend a good place to learn about futures trading, e.g. how contracts work, etc.? Thanks.

For example, right now I have data for a CL 05-10 and a CL 06-10, are these the same instrument or different? Do I need to merge the 05-10 into the 06-10? Thanks.

You can trade either of them, but most trade the month with the most volume which is currently 05-10, unless you are hedging or something. A good site to look at for this information is Light Sweet Crude Oil

the surest way to tell which month to trade is to compare them on DOM side by side, pick the one with the most number.
