Multicharts or MC.NET indicator to save bar data into a MySQL/MS SQL Server database?
I was looking for an indicator written either for Multicharts or Multicharts.NET that would save each downloaded bar-data into a database ... so, once the indicator gets applied to the chart, it would iterate through each bar and save it externally.
As a small parenthesizes, it seems MC downloads only following fields: (Date, Time, O, H, L, C, UpVol, TotalVol, OpenInterest). Everything else gets computed locally. And there is no way you can set the app to download any other data for a symbol (even though a data provider like IQFeed could give you a ton more info, including fundamental data).
I don't think such an indicator that would save the chart data externally is particularly difficult to do, it should be fairly easy, especially in .NET ... where everything is included in the MC.VStudio/.NET.API. Now the tricky part follows:
Once an instrument chart is saved in the external MySQL database with such an indicator, we close the MC GUI, delete the instrument data from Quote Manager/(local MC database) and disconnect the PC from internet - such that no automatic symbol data download takes place when next time opened.
Could such an indicator, once applied on an empty chart of the same symbol, be programmed to populate the chart with the instrument data taken from the external database?
This would be a nice integration with an external database, and avoid some of the problems Multicharts has with its local database when getting corrupted because of the growing size, or because of an upgrade, etc.
Too many times I've got as a suggestion/workaround from MC Support to delete the symbol data from QuoteManager in order to correct a particular problem.
Thanks!
Can you help answer these questions from other members on NexusFi?
This sounds like a lot of work (even though you consider it easy) to solve something I personally don't have experienced an issue with. My database is currently 18gb and have updated MultiCharts numerous times without this database being corrupted.
I'm wondering about the following. You mention that the data feeds in MultiCharts do not have all the data, like fundamental data. Wouldn't it make sense then to make a direct connection with the data feed and then download into the custom database?
Now you intend to do a lot of manual work (start MultiCharts, add symbol to QuoteManager, create chart, apply indicator, let it write to the database, remove chart, remove symbol from QuoteManager, close MultiCharts, disconnect PC from internet), while you have the same limitations in terms of available data feed fields.
I'd agree with Jura, why even use MC to get the data into your database. Create something that hooks up to the dataprovider's API and download the data you want. Then you can go back and create custom bars in MC based on your data for example.
On a side note you might want to look for what is giving you the database issues. In almost ten years with MC and various installations I don't recall any (major) issues with the build in database *knock on wood*.
