SD Card Instead of SSD

SanDisk is releasing their 512 Gig SD card for a mere $800 (most likely guaranteed to be $100 in less than 2 years.) Projections are they will have a 2T card in 2 years.

Can one use a SD card (64, 256, 512 gig, etc.) instead of a SSD drive?

If they are anything like normal SD cards they are way too slow to use as a SSD.

Correction, I guess they really are fast enough.
