hi guys. decided to post this in the tech-support section as this would be technical in nature. i would like to ask traders (especially scalpers) that are not in the US and trading in Globex. what do you do to minimize network latency from Chicago to your home/office?

i am currently getting 250ms average ping time from my location to Chicago servers. as a scalper, i think it is not giving me any edge to decide when to get in and get out as my connection would be lagging behind people already in the US. i know my connection would not be able to match the latency of people in the US. but being able to squeeze the latency to the lowest i can achieve would be best.

so, what do you guys do to lower latency? do you purchase some client software? VPN? hack the registry?

thanks in advance for the contributions guys.

Best way is a VPS located in Chicago. A VPN won't help much.

How about coming up with methods where the latency is unimportant?

I've done that.

P.S. I am a breakout trader

your point is valid. however, for the sake of discussion, we would like to see some solutions on how to minimize latency. online gamers have done this. i don't know if their solutions would apply to traders. besides, lower latency would affect data display and order execution.

this would be a viable solution for algorithmic traders where they can just set their automated strategy up on the VPS and leave it. however, for manual traders, this would be a different story. as the VPS screen being displayed remotely on your PC would still be subject to latency problem.

i have seen some people (on another forum) claim that changing some values in the registry would result in lower latency due to reducing time in checking/validating packets. it would make sense that some features in the operating system may be modified to lower latency, but this would vary from one OS to another.

i have tried it on Windows 8.1, but i'm disappointed it does not work on my machine.

@jerbersoft: Like BigMike mentioned earlier the major part of your latency is caused by the distance to the exchange. Any sophisticated network card solution costs several 100s to 1000s $ and you can gain 1-3 ms with it. I think your average latency spreads much more than this. So it's worthless. To change TCP/IP Parameters isn't helpfull at trading, because the main "Solutions" disable some error checking functions. It's OK for gaming but not for trading. You Need a fast AND reliable connection to the exchange.

So i think there isn't an solution for your problem.
