Hey,

I just wanted to start a thread about some interesting books to take the mind off trading. Please post whatever books you're reading at the moment or simply just your favorite books you'd recommend.

Here's a book I'm currently reading about the a journalist's account of the Vietnam war

I looked around for the best books on the subject and came across this one. You can find it here Dispatches: Michael Herr: 9780679735250: Amazon.com: Books

I also read it partly inspired one of my favorite movies Apocalypse now

R.I.P. Joseph Bach (Itchymoku), 1987-2018.

Ok, on the subject of Vietnam, actually a Havana-esque view of Saigon, Don Winslow's "Satori". Authorized Trevanian prequel.

Just read "The Shipping Man: Adventures in Ship Finance"

For me, this book was a page turner.

I'd like to post the first paragraph.

OK, here is the cover, which is actually from an oil painting.

"Chapter One Serendipity

Robert Fairchild gazed deeply into the amber numbers illuminated on his Bloomberg terminal, staring in disbelief that something called the “BDI” had fallen by 97%. The three letters, which he quickly learned were shorthand for the Baltic Dry Cargo Index and measured the daily time charter rates Dry Cargo Index and measured the daily time charter rates year low in just three months. As a New York City hedge fund manager who valued volatility, Robert Fairchild was immediately intrigued by what he saw.

The funny thing was he had stumbled on the ocean shipping industry purely by mistake when he typed the letters “BDI” into Google, instead of the stock quotation box on his Bloomberg. And although he couldn’t realize it that late morning in early May, his chance encounter with the international shipping industry would forever change his life."

It's a novel, and should make a good summer read for anybody interested in markets.

I can hardly wait to read the sequel, Viking Raid. Looks like the author is turning this into a series.
Imagine that, a financial thriller series in which the hero is a hedge fund manager.

While we are on the topic of vikings...

The most amazing novel I have read recently is "The Long Ships," which is a very old historical novel.
Great story, great characters, fascinating milieu. With a big quest for gold. Was made into a movie, but should
be a candidate for a remake.

It is fiction but the reviews on this book are pretty good.

I like this site as the reviews are given by readers...not paid publisher reviews

the book I am starting to read is "Free Rider" by John L. Reynolds...it is a true story told in novel form about a whiz kid on Bay Street (Toronto's financial district) who stole and spent $20million.

Here's another hedge fund thriller that won't take your mind off trading, but I wanted to mention it, in honor of the low VIX:The Fear Index by Robert Harris

This is a book about creating the perfect black box to trade the VIX. It falls apart in the latter half, after the action gets going, but I like the scenes of confrontation between the traders and the lowly risk manager guy inside the firm.
