This is a facebook post from my friend who lives in Venezuela:
My country is broken. Every day I live in fear as crime is soaring - since my time here I have escaped a kidnapping attempt and just last week I witnessed robbery at gunpoint. - But that is not the worst part. The saddest part, which makes me cry almost daily, is seeing people starving every where, people dying from lack of medicine, kids rummaging in trash to find food, and grandparents simply waiting for death to come... Long lines every where. The look of despair in people's eyes. The lack of humanity. And it makes me wonder how there could be so much evil? Because the people responsible for it, not only in government, but all those who have stolen everything they can and simply used our Central / Federal Bank as their own personal money making machine, are living free. How can all those people simply turn a blind eye to a reality they cannot escape because it is everywhere? There are honest businessmen in Venezuelan, there are people who deserve to enjoy the life they worked for... But unfortunately there are also too many, who destroyed this country and took everything they could, directly affecting the well-being of our citizens. Because at the end of the day, we all suffer with the water and electricity shortages and the product scarcity. How can those people be so evil and live their lives as if nothing is happening around them? I am trying to work for my country and to contribute with solutions and projects for change... I know I am not the only one and that gives me hope. But some days I wonder if we are all fools... Because it is exhausting to have to try so hard everyday and have no guarantees that at the end of the day you'll make it home safely.
