Short answer, I found a new time suck, futures.io (formerly BMT)!
Long answer, I realized I was pissing away 2 hours plus per day on Facebook. For what? So, I quit all social media that is not directly related to trading. I want to focus on trading. I don't have time for dealing with all that crap on Facebook, Linkedin, G+, etc.
I am staying on Twitter and have upped my involvement with Stocktwits, because both of those are increasing my trading and market knowledge. But I don't spend all that much time on them.
I have decided I am going to make my online home here at futures.io (formerly BMT), at least until I can figure out what the heck people are talking about. There is so much to learn and so little time...
I consider myself to be of an "older" generation when computers were strictly used for computing.
Any other use was non-existent, the internet was not born yet, and I would listen to stories of teachers (in "their" generation) driving over to the other end of town to submit their program (a deck of punched cards) to the central university computer which would be then held in a queue. They would eventually receive the results (output) and then they if would have found some bugs they would get a NEW set of punched cards for submitting.
Now we have a whole range of "Frivolous uses" (we communicate because we can?) though there are really good progressive applications too.
I think a little Facebook etc. is a great thing. These SNSs have brought old friends back into my life and brought me into contact with a lot of wonderful news ones. Just like futures.io (formerly BMT) does.
My approach to FB is what I call a touch-n-go carrier landing kind of membership. I will go off for months at a time and do something productive, then come reactivate on FB temporarily for birthdays and holidays or something. Exchange greetings with my peeps, then I am off again.
Maybe it's like StarTrek "cloaking" and "decloaking."
Eee-bye-ek lad, in my day we had punched tape and we wrote programs on forms which we handed to pretty girls to make the punched tapes for us from. Then we fed them into a machine with 8k of ram (coil cores!) and a 500rpm drum and it told a ship where to go. I miss the pretty girls but much prefer a Ghz to a kHz, for sure not everything in life is progress.
On one very sad ultra-nerdy Christmas I reverse engineered a lost hardware driver from the binary punched tape code, my Sudoku I suppose!.
I know exactly what you're talking about....and in consideration of my 'advanced' age, I'd like to be allowed to add punch cards and magnetic account cards to the soup...

I was born too late to see those oil drums and punch cards. My first computer was around the years after Jobs made his Apple I. did the usual lame slow interpeted BASIC using a UHF connection to the old tv/monitor with 40 blocky text columns. (Atari 800XL) Eventually tried out Assembly on the 6502. But never got good at it. Too young and not a genius so couldn't understand it. I did have an older friend who actually worked on the electronics for one of those early oil drum "drives". Well haven't seen any real change to the core CPU (ALU) paradigm and use of transistors if there's any thing in a computer that stays put year to year, decade by decade. Still "just" a fancy digital logic adder machine. carry look'ahead or whatever they use now.
I recently logged into facebook on my birthday. I saw some wall posts or whatever they call them wishing me a happy birthday. I was going to reply 'thank you' when I scrolled down and sure enough I could see lot of wishes from the last birthday in 2012 and then another bunch from the birthday of 2011.
I hadn't logged in for two years! Also I gave up on my idea of replying with 'thank you's because that would indicate a trend change.
the heart and gold of fb imo is the funny pictures from the pages I follow because I've all but lost hope in being entertained by my friend's show off/drama based posts. I think fb is starting to capitalize on their one up approach like 4chan with picture comments based on other comments or posts and prioritizing comments by likes even though 4chan prioritizes differently it's starting to feel the same with all the memes.
