Been rotating out towers every 3 years. Keep extra monitors, mouse, and keyboard close to replace. Had a CPU fan go out yesterday while on initial start up and went to back up laptop. A non event.
Can you help answer these questions from other members on NexusFi?
really only 3-4 years and that's if i start to have problems. Unless i am strictly upgrading or replacing something that gets a lot of wear then i am not touching much at all.
My main trade computer is a Sony Vaio from 2005, running XP, and never misses a beat. 2GB RAM. No crashes, no freezes, no delays, and pushes 3 monitors. I am going to ride her til she won't ride no more. It currently runs two separate installations of Sierra Chart (each with a different feed), and approximately 10-15 charts per side, with layers of indicators....
The only thing that has ever needed work was the power needed to be disconnected once and the power button held down for 60 seconds. I thought I had lost her.
with an I7 core processor, 1tb ssd, 16 gb of ram, and 2gb graphics card I'm not sure I'll ever have to replace this computer for retail trading, but I'm sure gaming will continue to progress as it has. In fact, I don't believe video games will stop becoming realistic even after the point the industry masters undecipherable graphics from reality so that will be the sole reason for my upgrade which will probably be in 2-3 years. (most likely my graphics card, possibly liquid cooling idk). But while we are on the topic, I have had to replace a mouse. I prefer a corded laser mouse because recharging just becomes a hassle over time even though the cute blue chainsaw wielding one has it's kicks. ;}

About every 2+ years is the norm for me. Sometimes if I updated in between I can get another year or so out of it. I replace them usually not because something breaks but because of "Windows rot" it just becomes unbearably slow, so I either replace the hard drive and re-install everything, or just buy/build a new computer outright if other parts of the computer are slow or outdated. As a recent example I have 13" MacBook Pro Early 2011 model with a Core i5 chip, 4GB RAM and 340GB 5400 RPM hard drive. I've been using it more frequently lately for iPhone/iPad app development and I just can't handle the speed any longer so I'm upgrading the RAM to 16GB and a 500GB SSD hard drive. The chip is good enough but these other upgrades should greatly increase overall responsiveness.
I bought a gaming pc late last year mainly for trading i7 3.6 , 24GB ram, 2GB graphics card, And I totally regret it. If I could go back in time I would get a Lenovo Workstation PC. Gaming PC's can be really unreliable especially if you want to leave them on for long periods of time, like one week for example.
Last Update is to an Apple iMac 27 inch with another 27inch monitor on the side last year ( 16gb ram, i5 3ghz) . As I use Windows primarily for work (I.T consulting) and all trading apps are written for Windows I have been hesitating for several years to make the transition.
Works like a dream. I run Windows 7 in a Parallels virtual machine. Totally compatible with everything I use and runs Windows better then any PC I have ever owned. No Blue Screen of deaths/slow downs/ crashes and its very fast.
Im running Tradestation and Multicharts along with Interactive Traders Workstation and CQG feeds all concurrently. I run automated trading systems in Multicharts 24/5 and therefore need reliability.
At the same time Im running all my regular Osx apps. I have used windows since version 1 in 1991-2 ( I think ).
