I have never done Windows upgrade before, always built machines with a new Windows OEM license. I have an old DIY machine with Windows Vista 64-bit OEM. Can it be upgraded to Windows 8 by purchasing a Windows 8 upgrade license such as this one:

Newegg.com - Microsoft Windows 8 Professional Upgrade

Thanks,

Thanks,

You can usually do the upgrade if your computer meets the compatibility standards (see MSFT site).
The issue with upgrades is that you usually bring all the crap over from the previous Windows version you currently have installed.

It is a pain to reinstall all of the apps and programs but usually worth the effort to not have previous issues follow you to the new version.

To perform the upgrade you either need the original media or to have the required previous Windows installed on the hard drive you are upgrading. If you manage to get it to install without doing that (some hacking required) then a few months down the road it will nag you about not being a valid license and require you reinstall the old windows and reinstall the upgrade. To avoid, this, more hacking is required.
Just my opinion.

I do have the original Vista Disc with the license code and plan to do a clean install. Do I need to install Vista first, then do the upgrade?

That is how MSFT suggests but I prefer to do the install without a previous version installed.
Usually the install will ask for a valid product to be put into the cd/dvd and it can verify.

Some versions of Windows balk at that process and want you to install.
I don't remember the link (check google) but the work-around is to put the new DVD files onto the hard drive or on the USB drive and modify one of the settings files to not ask.

I would try to install first and see if it asks for proof.
