Im currently a part time trader and am hoping to make the move to full time trading at the end of the year. Im busy working on the countless factors that need to be in place before being able to quit my job.
My 2 main intellectual passions are programming and trading. I've recently started using NinjaTrader and love it because it combines both of those passions. Im not using it to trade live yet since I already have a platform that I use to trade the Safex ALSI (Top40 index in South Africa). Getting live ALSI data for ninjatrader will be no easy (or cheap) task, so im just using it to back test strategies on instruments which I hope to trade when I make the move to full time (eg: FESX, FTSE100(Z), FDAX).
Seems to be a great community here with a lot of extremely useful information. Im looking forward to learning a lot (and contributing as my knowledge grows).

Hi DarkPoolTrading,
Nice to see your post, I started out trading stocks on the JSE back in 1994/5 and eventually ended up managing part of a fund on the ALSI. I enjoyed the ALSI but there is nothing like Index Futures on the international arena when comparing apples with apples. I have seen equivalent ALSI daily value go through on some instruments in under a minute.
I see you are in JHB, my office is in Sandton but moving to Melrose Arch in August once all settled you welcome to visit and see the setup.
In the mean time please join the "South African" "Social Group", lets get a community going this side. I also posted a thread " South African Traders " so we can keep each other posted on local developments that affect us in the markets.

One of the things I like about the ALSI (I may be completely wrong here, but this is the way it feels), is that it doesn't seem be overrun by HFT and massive volume, quote stuffing and some of the other advanced/sneaky things that go on in some of the bigger markets. I may be wrong though.
I also like that the ALSI is almost a mini-sized contract in comparison to some of the markets out there. For example the ALSI is R10 per point. Whereas the YM is $5 per tick.
I agree though, there's a lot of exciting stuff to trade out there.

No you are correct in saying that because there is very little in the way of internal data if you like on the ALSI but I see that as a disadvantage. The "advanced/sneaky things" is a great way to gain an edge, if you learn to recognize what the big boys are hiding you get to play on their team and not get by them
BTW: Vox ( Vox Telecom ) has a data product Fishbone, its a Line Bonder which combines multiple independent access lines, through proprietary line aggregation technologies, into a single high-capacity corporate access solution offering a lower cost alternative to traditionally high-priced access technologies, such as Diginet. I am thinking of trying it out. Its a bit pricey though at R5k whats that about $450 thats just insane, my mate in HK pays about $50 US for a 100 meg low latency line. Anyways check it out.
I am new to the forum and have read you have managed to get the ALSI data on Ninjatrader.
Do you know of a guide or tutorial to help me get this setup properly?
I am using Kinect EOD data just to see if I can replicate the data from my SA broker but looks different.
When I use to trade the ALSI a few years ago I did a lot of searching to find datafeeds that provided ALSI data to be used with NT. The only thing I was able to find at the time was esignal which had an ALSI feed. At the time there was nothing else,...but that may have changed since then. Maybe someone else will be able to comment if there are more options now.
Hi All.
I trade the beast everyday and I must tell you 20 years later, it's killing me, but I love it. I use local online broker tools but also had some custom indicators and systems created in Omnitrader. Only data source is expensivesignal. I was wondering if any of you guys had skills to convert vb code to MT5? Let me know please.
