Over the last year or so I have become increasingly annoyed by the erosion of privacy and the amount of personal information that is collected in the name of providing any service. In my case - Google. I use Google for everything from email, calendaring, online docs, youtube, Chrome, Android etc etc. I was thinking if for any reason my Google account is disabled or deleted, I would be in a very bad place.

Not to mention how disturbing it is that within 24 hours of me doing a Google search and having an email back & forth between friends about buying a new car, Google Ads were showing me ads from car dealers near my house.

So I am looking to setup my own "Cloud" so to speak. The basic requirements are

- Host my domains. I'll probably have at least three domains.
- Email with IMAP, good Spam filtering, Calendar and Web access
- SFTP access for files
- VPN access
- Remote desktop or VNC access
- Web server for personal website
- Windows 2008 so I can muck about with coding my own .net web apps

I don't want a hosted domain rather something that would give me my own virtual servers which I can remote desktop into. Like what Amazon & Azure offer, but a cheaper option than those two. They work out too expensive for me.

Thanks in advance for any useful suggestions.

Contact @sam028 for good server deals. He can do dedicated or he can do virtual private servers. But in both cases, it isn't shared, you are the only one accessing your install.

If you can get a copy of Win Server 2k3(and Exchange Server 2k3) and have help from someone with a MCSE you can do a lot of what you mentioned at least on the internal organization side and with cheaper 5+ yr old computers assuming you're not going to be a public website or store.

I spoke to sam028. His setup is more toward traders wanting low latency to the exchange with high CPU usage. Not suitable for personal use like mine.

I think I will go for Amazon. They seem cheaper than Azure. I should be able to get a micro Win 2008 instance for about $15 per month.

Any suggestions for email server software? Can you run Exchange without active directory?

No, and seriously -a full dev setup is around 20+ gigabyte. Buy computers. I just addd one bto my private cloud. Cloud is kind of big - a small VPS never will cut it for your requirements. Exchange alone really likes GIGABYTES, plus Active Directory. You need fast disc IO etc.

That will increase the cost significantly. Not just the up front costs but ongoing costs will be significant. This is a personal project not commercial. If I was doing it for my trading then yes, I would buy dedicated servers or colocate my own equipment.

One nice option seems to be Exchange online by Microsoft. It's $4 per month per user. You get email, calendar, spam filtering, Outlook Web Access, 25GB storage, native client access from pretty much any smartphone. It's not everything I wanted but at least it will let me decouple my email and calendar from the spying algos at Google.

Yes, my solution is really made for traders, with their specific needs (low latency, reliability, redundancy, good bandwidth, fast CPU, "small" hdd, ...).

You could find a cheaper solution with Linux tools , a cheap VPS Linux VPS somwhere, Exchange is a quite heavy solution for your needs.

Well, then dont ask this question like you do. Seriously. "My own cloud" is not "my own small VPS". YOu asked "I want my own racing team" then it goes down to own a fiat panda

That is just stupid thinking with zero imagination. Screw the environment, screw the cost I am going to buy a Hummer so I drive a block to the supermarket to buy eggs and milk.

"Cloud Computing" is defined as the delivery of computing as a service over a network, typically the internet, with scalability on demand as the prime feature. Why should I waste all those resources on my own personal rack mounted machines - CPU cycles, electricity, cooling when my requirements are tiny and I can just as easily do with sharing a server with other virtual machines?

Even a single compute instance delivered by Amazon or Azure or any other VPS provider over the internet is my personal cloud. I can run my apps on it, access it from any where with internet access, it is backed up & the hardware is managed transparently to me. Scaling it up to n+1 is matter of minutes.

Thanks mate but you can keep your advice to yourself.

There is a really good article over ArsTechnica on this issue

My smartphone, the spy: protecting privacy in a mobile age

They suggest an free open source alternate called FreedomBox

FreedomBox Foundation
FreedomBox - Debian Wiki

Running this over a cheap small Linux VPS should be quite feasible.
