The gods had condemned Sisyphus to ceaselessly rolling a rock to the top of a mountain, whence the stone would fall back of its own weight. They had thought with some reason that there is no more dreadful punishment than futile and hopeless labor.
Sisyphus is the absurd hero. He is, as much through his passions as through his torture. His scorn of the gods, his hatred of death, and his passion for life won him that unspeakable penalty in which the whole being is exerted toward accomplishing nothing. This is the price that must be paid for the passions of this earth. The workman of today works everyday in his life at the same tasks, and his fate is no less absurd. But it is tragic only at the rare moments when it becomes conscious
Somedays, more often than not, I am overtaken by the absurdity of this career ( trader ). At one point we served a function to take the other side or risk for those who needed hedge for business purposes. We create nothing. It is of course simply a zero sum game in the futures market. If we succeed it allows the privelege of being a consumer. Normally a pejorative term until the last decade. Now absurdity abounds as the consumer is a hero. I wonder at the end of my life will this ultimately seem like a waste.

Trading will give my life the freedom to be as I want my life and my family's to be. It is no boulder and it is no definition of my life. Those who seek to define us seek to confine us.
Many thanks to the site and all the contributors. Great source of info.
I suspect I am probably one of older people on this site ( 53 ) and I have been pushing the proverbial trading boulder for decades long before electronic trading existed . It was much easier before and at least you had a sense that it related to something. Fundamentals for example. It is a casino now -
My intention was to reach out metaphorically to the younger traders who I suspect make up of the majority of this site - younger relative to me of course.
I have had the good fortune of making a lot of money. For years I existed to make more so I could keep motivated to buy more things. My achilles heal is exotic sports cars. Ironically when you work from home you have virtually no place to drive them. Except to parade around and hope people are looking at you. Because otherwise they cease to be real - it is like the observer effect in physics - you start to need others to see you and your stuff to confirm your reality. Because looking at the cars by yourself in your garage it quickly becomes meaningless. I am a slow learner - it took quite a few cars to figure this out. It is like building resistence to medicine when you are on the accumulation of stuff wheel - you need more and more to just feel the same.
So what in the world is my point? From this vantage point of 53 years of life - my fathers age when he died - I hope to save a few from my mistakes. IF Motivation to buy things to keep your trading engine going is your fuel it is ultimately self deluding. Of course we must all do the survival dance to pay the bills and provide for our families. Just don't forget about the spirit dance - because you will be old before you know it. Good trading and good luck to all.
If you fail you lose TIME (our most precious resource as an individual).
If you win, you have a choice to trade it for TIME or Material objects or a combination of both.
Typically what I have seen in any form of success in any kind of business and due to the way we are 'raised' the person typically trades it for Material objects (100%).
That is a good point about the observer effect and that should be taught from birth. If people realized this we would be living in a much simplified life.
