just purchsed a new computer with i7 2600k 340 GHz, Asus p67 motherboard, 16 GB DDR3 1600 GHz memory, and 2 AMD FirePro v4800 video cards.
I use eSignal as my main trading platform. However, when I go from a minute chart to a 900 tick chart, it can take from 42 seconds to 52 for the chart to load. My thinking is that it should be almost instantaneous with this kind of horsepower. The FirePro vid cards for 3 27inch monitors are an entry level workstation card with 1 gig of memory. I'm wondering if they are the problem/bottleneck. The cpu is working at only 3% when the chart is loading.
Any ideas as to what the problem may be...faulty platform or component issue? Oh, I'm also using Viper antivirus which is supposed to be a light footprint.
Can you help answer these questions from other members on NexusFi?
If you have Windows Task Manager up you can monitor the CPU used per process. Find eSignal in the list and see what it says. Here are some guesses, but I am not an eSignal expert:
- eSignal is likely a single-threaded application, it means that on your quad core (or eight cores with HyperThreading) system, only 1 out of the 4 (or 7) cores are doing anything at any given time.
- It could be any indicators or studies on your chart are slowing things down.
- It could be that it is re-downloading data from their server, which is slowing things down - not necessarily because of your internet speed, but because maybe their server is slow.
Maybe someone else could speak as to whether or not eSignal is multi-threaded, but I highly doubt it. You could disable all indicators and just try your test on a simple chart, and see if it takes just as long.
Also, if you check out today's Sierra Chart webinar, you'll see that it is entirely possible for things to be "lightning quick" as he showed today during the webinar, just depends on your platform and its capabilities.
One thing to check is to see how many days of chart data you are loading.
Right click on the chart and choose - DATA SERIES
Then look at the box to the right of - DAYS TO LOAD.
(it's under the DATA section)
Minute charts tend to load lots of days.
(i.e. 100 days etc)
If you are trying to load a 900 tick chart for 100 days, that could take a while no matter what processor/PC you are using. The bottle-neck is likely your internet speed or the Esignal data feed rate.
Try changing the DAYS TO LOAD to a reasonable number like 5 or 10.
(do you really see any significance in a tick that occurred more than 10 days ago?)

It takes me forever to peck out a few sentences, seems like DavidHP and I were responding at the same time albeit, I the slower of the two. So far I think we're all on the same page.
Another (could-be serious) issue with a new computer if you didn't install the OS yourself is bloatware. If you haven't checked, removed or disabled all the unwanted additional software that may be installed, they can at any time (unless programed by you) fight for an internet connection to download auto-updates. You may be well aware of this but I thought it deserved mention. I have removed DOZENS (yes dozens) of resource sucking programs from "big box store" computers, for friends and family, home and small business/office.
Barry, eSignal is single threaded based on my research on Google. If you'll load Task Manager and monitor the app.exe and see it uses either 12.5% (8 core) or 25% (4 core) then you'll have your reason for it being slow.
If it is less % than this, then like I said try removing the indicators and studies. If it then stops @ 25% then again you have your reason.
If it does not, then it is likely downloading data like I and others mentioned. You can go to addgadget.com and download the Network Meter and confirm network activity during this time. If there is some, then that could be the reason.
Bottom line, it likely has very little to nothing to do with your computer.
You have a great machine..there is no problem with your computer whatsoever...It could be 1 of 2 things....weak or slow internet connection...or we have heard of Esignal specifically have some data latency issues lately
