My Surround Sound equipment got zapped a while ago and I was about to replace it when it occurred to me that, since I have an extra computer already and have to upgrade soon for a decent trading computer, why not develop a centralized, "control" and "datastore" module out of the extra computer that would do a LOT to increase functionality AND consolidate media storage.

I'm putting this out to a few folks to see what comes up for resources (people, software, hardware) to pull this together. I'm quite sure nearly all of it is feasible... have a question about the surround sound capability and I'm not at all current on the recording/TIVO aspect (both from a legal perspective and a software perspective); I'm also not sure about feeding the Cable box into a computer.

You might know of an AV nut with whom I can consult. (If you're that "nut", my apologies in advance!). You might also know that all this currently exists in a tight little module somewhere. I've been something of a hermit over the past few years, so forgive me if all this is obvious.

Any and all ideas welcomed!

thanks pr.. I have started gathering a little about it... seems as though there is at least one laptop that is built to do exactly this... Acer Aspire 8930G

a friend has been giving me tidbits throughout the evening... unfortunately not good news for my goals which were to use equipment that I already had and add just a little here and there... I need to acquire a significant trading computer so that is where my initial resources are going to go... I'll try to summarize his information for you in the next day or so.

I tried it, and few other Linux based media center systems. I had to modify the tuner card kernel driver, and it was not perfect, the remote control was not working, not TV recording, etc, etc...
After few weeks of fight, I've installed Vista Media Center Edition, and then it works fine (that was 2 years ago).
It a bit different from what Saroj wants but here what I've build:
- a silent enclosure, no more available, but the same as this:https://www.antec.com/Believe_it/product.php?id=NzE3
- a motherboard with and integrated video chip, and HDMI output (for the TV) and optical (for audio);
- low consumption processor, low noise 1Tb disk drive, dvd writer;
- wifi card
- DVB card
- Media Center remote control
With this you watch/record TV (no Tivo here, but similar stuff), listen to music, watch .avi, surf on the Net, ...
The most important aspect is the noise: the box has to be very very quiet.
I'm very happy with my system, but it's 2 years old, there is maybe something better now.

thanks much for all the detail sam... I don't have Vista Media Center Edition but I have XP Media Center Edition. Given what I've heard so far, I'll probably hold off for the moment in favor of focusing on trading, but I'm going to continue my data gathering so that I will at least understand the parts necessary and how they fit together.
