I'm India now and in getting here, I came through Dubai Airport (Emirates Airlines). Their Duty Free shop had monitors, and the prices seemed quite good. I head back through again next week (possibly) and I'm contemplating a purchase, if I can find something worthwhile...

I'm looking at 24" screens, and possibly 27 if the price is not too steep, but most likely 24, as I'd prefer not spending over 250 to 300 tops per monitor. Looking at a 4 monitor system. If a 5th is needed, I have a 24" iMac that I can fire-up and run TOS to get some helpful data to share the load...

So, for a 24" trading monitor, what characteristics or specs would you want, at a minimum, and what would be most desirable?

Thanks much!

if you are in time crunch go to ET look under hardware forum. I bought samsung monitor mostly but I don't see any diff in quality when I use other brand, maybe because I am not a gamer.

I have two gateway fpd2485w monitors, they are unfortunately not being made anymore to my knowledge. They are the most amazing monitors I have used, mainly for two reasons: they are 1920x1200, not 1920x1080 -- those extra 120 pixels on the rows make a big difference; also, they can rotate and do portrait or landscape if you ever need to use your monitor that way. I got them each for about $350 used.

I would suggest looking at the specs of this monitor here:
Amazon.com: Gateway FPD 2485W - LCD display - TFT - 24" - widescreen - 1920 x 1200 - 500 cd/m2 - 1000:1 - 6 ms - 0.27 mm: Electronics

My suggestion is to go and look at some monitors in person and see how it suits your eye. I bought a monitor a while back (about $150) and when I got home realized that next to my other, it just didn't look good. I would highly suggest spending as much money as you can, as you will be looking at this many hours a day. Why do you need 4 or 5? I would much rather get 3 good monitors than 5 okay ones, but if you actually need 5 monitors and all that information won't distract you, then that's what you should get.

Personally I would not consider anything larger than 24" as you'll have a hard time finding a quad monitor stand that supports them, and they are just too big. Better to do six 24"'s than four 27"'s in my opinion.

As for specs, I agree that 1920x1200 is preferred over 1920x1080, but they are hard to find - usually only available in the pro business models which can cost twice as much as the consumer grade panels. Not sure I would spend twice as much just for that. Otherwise I would look at the actual manufacturer of the panel, not just the bezel/oem, and try to do some research comparing panels.

I don't have specific advice on panels as I haven't bought any in many years and am out of date. I know that there are IPS panels which are generally considered the best vs traditional lcd, but this tech is all new to me and I can't really comment until I do more research.

Ask @sysot1t.

I can only surmise as to how many monitors I'll need / want as I haven't had the opportunity to try such a set-up. But, given the discussions I've had here, it seems that I can probably be ok with 3 24" monitors. Four would definitely give me some breathing room to fit stuff I think I'll want to incorporate...

I agree 1200 would be nice on a 24" screen. Not a lot to choose from though, and the increased price for the additional real estate is a bit difficult to swallow, but if I see something in DXB at a good price...

This seems to be the most affordable 24" with that resolution:

Amazon.com: HP Promo LA2405WG LCD Monitor.: Electronics

From the first review, it doesn't have an IPS screen, which Mike discusses below...

You bring-up a point that I failed to mention from my notes... compatibility with a monitor stand. I suppose I have time brush-up on panels, and maybe I should do so. I have over 2 hours in DXB and with my laptop and free wifi, I can search on the models available to see if something looks appealing.

Also, it would seem that a DVI and / or HDMI port would be desirable?

If I am not mistaken, DVI should be pretty much standard on any decent monitor. Check your video card specs to see how many monitors you can support, and what the max resolution is. I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure you want to avoid VGA at this point.

I think displayport or hdmi is required for resolutions over 1920x1200, which is the limit of DVI. But I don't know this for sure, and even with a 24" monitor 1920x1200 should be the max native res you would see in most cases.

New higher end graphics cards are not using DVI anymore. But if you have older cards with DVI on them, you could keep it simple by getting DVI monitors. If you are building a new system and it has DisplayPort, then probably worth it to get DisplayPort monitors just for simplicity sake to eliminate DVI to DisplayPort adapters, which can cause some random problems.

interesting, I was talking to a buddy the other day complaining about my setup with 4x24" LCD portrait mode and how much time I spent organizing the screen; when he basically mentioned something that made a lot of sense: anything bigger than 19" is a waste of time and $$$...

he allocates 1 program per screen and has only 4x19"(1280x1024) .... one for Bloomberg, one for AES(their order exec), another one for P&L and Risk Analytics, and another for email and spreadsheets... as he stated, he didnt wanted to have to think much when he was looking for an app, he just wanted to send it to that screen and maximize it and focus on trading..

that made me think a lot, given that I have basically taken my 4 screens and split each into 2.. basically creating 8 screens.. which I am beginning to find as a waste of time.. after all, I only have 6 charts up.. 4 instruments and 2 for internals and then my tradevec dom's and email/web...

I have at home 4x20.1(1600x1200) screens.. I will give it a go trying with just 4 screens...

my suggestion to you, size does not matter... get what you need that will make things simpler...

and if stands are tough to come by over there, you should get a few of them ... take a look at OutletPC over @ amazon.com ... they are the same product that tyke supply resells, but cheaper...

Thank you bukkan. I'll be returning home to California soon. Taking care of things here in India. In Gujarat now, heading to Mumbai next week (US Consulate)...
