I hope that my question is not too dumb. But I have found nothing appropiate whith the search. If I missed anything, I would appreciate link or something.
Can you point me to a source where I can download a good template? I am just wondering, how the pasting of screenshots is handled properly in that Excel journal.
I'm on a mission to improve my Excel trade journal.
I'd like to hear input on what metrics you guys measure in your journal. For instance:
Sharpe ratio
Expectancy
Win/Loss Dollar Ratio
Win Percentage
Dollar gain per trade put …
Bear in mind there's more templates available on FIO. Use the search box at the top-right corner of the screen and type keywords such as "spreadsheet" or "Excel" which will give you several results.
As for screenshots, what I do is save the screenshot in a set location, and then reference that screenshot in the corresponding Excel row with the use of the formula HYPERLINK.
I struggled like yourself years ago when trading options with different spreads on at the same time.
What I've done then, I now apply to my Futures trading.
Because I couldn't find anything that worked, I created my own with Word.
Few things to make MS Word work for me with screenshots,
- Created Templates.
- View: Web Layout
- Horizontal
- Page width max, 22"
- Minimum indent
This allows me taking screenshot with 4K screens, or stacked 4K screens.
- I'll adjust the zoom and default text size, to compliment/prioritize typing text or screenshot size.
I then used the Navigation Pane, as my "Table of Contents"
and learned how to use Styles to insert sections into my Journal.
I then modified that template using Styles to create a baseline format, sections, and morning/EOD routines that I document.
Save as template, and open each day to fill out and document w/screenshots, my day/trades/thoughts as I trade through the day.
I learned through trial and error, that Word was getting corrupt when the file gets too big, so I'd have split the template into 2 halfs, and sometimes 3 halfs..
The max size before corruption has been increasing over the years... I've seen 60M, 300M, 600M, 400M..
How it corrupts has also been different over the years...
Lately, I know my file is getting too big when I paste into my template, and I see nothing.. Typing also shows nothing...
I'll save the file, no issues with it, and just open Template Part 2, paste there instead, and continue w/o issues.
When I say "corrupt" I don't mean the Word file itself, but the new data/text/screenshot is corrupt, and you instead need add to a 2nd file.
I've been adjusting my template, format, to what I need, what I want, over the years.
No need to pay anybody.
No need to request features or work around their structure.
It's yours, saved on your PC.
and it's perfectly custom for your needs.
I taught myself how to use Macros in Word,
so now I CNTRL+SHIFT+letter and insert Style with heading that includes timestamp, text, and screenshot.
I have different key button combos for timestamps/text/screenshots for trades, thoughts, analysis.
and with the Styles, it auto populates the Navigation Pane on the left, as my "table of contents" or "bookmark list" where I can see the timestamps, text, and can quickly navigate the entire journal.
I also pre-populate the template with helpful reminds for me at certain times of the day,
"hey, watch out for this"
"remember to keep an eye on this, that"
"drink water"
Each day, open the template, and I have my layout.
Just fill in the sections.
Will take some work, but it will pay off massively.
