My attempt at a funded account with OneUpTrader

As some of you probably already know i did a Gauntlet attempt with Earn2Trade at the end of 2018 and beginning of 2019.
Due to disappointing results which came from a losing streak i lost the funded account after 2 weeks. I have thought long and hard about the next step, another Gauntlet, another funding company or maybe even micro futures.
I have decided to go with OneUp this time, their trailing draw down is an absolute pain in the ass but unless i am as unfortunate as last time and i start the account in a losing streak once again it will have almost no impact at my trading system and results.

So, OneUp this time, i received a 10% discount for the $50K account and for me it seemed like the best offer for the money this time.

The strategy i still the same, however i have made some small changes.
This time around i am rating my trades from 1 star to 3 star setups and i will only trade the 3 star setups. I also managed to create a proprietary indicator which alerts me when a signal is coming up (a part of it is available here on the forum which is based on the CCI indicator in MultiCharts, however the end product is much more complicated than what was posted there). The reason to create such an alert indicator was to make sure i would't miss the 3 star setups, or at least as few as possible.

All trades are done on volume charts, all trades will be with 1 contract and the risk:reward per trade will be fixed at 1:1,5. However due to the trailing draw down some of the positions will be closed earlier if i notice support/resistance.

For those who are interested, here is the link to my previous journal. I am keeping those journals separate since the previous journal was specifically for the Gauntlet attempt. The first Gauntlet attempt starts at page 1, the second and free Gauntlet attempt starts at page 7.

Going to quit one hour early for the first day.

5 trades in total, 1 losing, 2 break even and 2 profits.
This gives me a total of $312,5.

In an effort to help, I just want to point out how your trading system just changed in the above statement... so let me rewrite it for you.

ďHad I been trading my own live account I would have made even more profit today, but because of the Oneup rules I changed my plan and traded my profitable system differentlyĒ

Hope that helps.

"Had I been trading my own live account I would have lost all my money in the past so I wouldn't have made any profit at all today."

I am just a little bit more careful at support and resistance zones right now because of the trailing draw down.

Just one trade for me today, not many reversals to take advantage of.
Since we are approaching lunch time in the USA and i have to leave for the rest of the session in 60 minutes i am going to call it a day.

One losing trade resulting in a loss of -$112,5.

Best of Luck. You can easily hit profit target in a day or 2. I met the consistency criteria and hit profit target in two days.

How its possible if 3 day is needed for calculation

Traders must have any 3 trading daysí net profits total summed up to equal 80% of the largest dayís net profit.

Please re-read the rules again.

Is this really true? How can you have met the consistency profit target in two days when they demand that any three trading days summed equal at least 80% of the largest day. That means you need at LEAST four days before they can even apply their consistency criteria.

They also require a minimum of fifteen days of evaluation and making over $3000 in two days would mean that the next 13 days of trading will also need to be decently profitable to meet consistency, to stop people swinging for the fences in the first couple of days, resetting if it doesn't work, and scalping for a tick or two each day if it does.

Edit:
Just read your other thread: ".. I met all the criteria in two days. Feels pretty good. I haven't traded for 15 days, but will get funded if I just execute 1 trade per day for next 13 days. Called One Up and they told me I basically don't have to do anything but make a quick execution in and out. Good Luck to everyone." ( )
So it appears you will pass as from your post above you suggest OneUp will just change or ignore their own rules whenever it suits them.

I will do the math for those who don't get it. If you hit 50% of the profit target in day 1 and day 2, you only need 1.00 for day 3. Then just execute and don't lose for next 13 days. I don't know why people complicate this shit.

Actually, probably most readers can understand the math fine. There's really no reason to suggest their problem is stupidity. Typically, we try not to be too rude around here.

People are most likely reacting to the fact that you may hit the profit targets with a few good trades, and you may formally meet the consistency targets too, but just a couple of big trades do not equal actual consistency, and they wonder how you will do when you have to trade for real.

Now, I do get the math, and frankly I'm pulling for you on this. Assuming that you have good reason for believing that you will be able to trade well when you get funded (and there's no way for anyone else to know this), it makes perfect sense to just take the win when you have it and play out the remaining days of the period until you get the funding. I would do the same. I gather that it's often done, which is no surprise. You would be gaming the rules, but that is done too. No surprise there, either.

So I hope you do well and get funded, and if you are funded I hope you do well there as well.

The case for what you are doing makes sense and is easy to explain in its own terms. I just did it, and I didn't assume anyone was too dumb to understand arithmetic. They really aren't.

Relax. It's a friendly environment here. People will actually want you to succeed, and their intentions are generally helpful.

Bob.

Best of luck!

This must be the worst day for my system since the last day of the funded account with E2T.
However this time it is not my system at fault but me ... I have missed 2 trades on NQ (+16 points) and i have done one trade with 2 contracts without noticing it until after the trade which resulted in a loss of $430.

Total loss for today -$705, going to call it a day to avoid any more losses and to make sure the daily draw down isn't going to be hit.

I am still in the evaluation account. After i forgot to do the updates for a few day's i have decided to no longer do the daily updates since i no longer see the use for it. Now i am just saving my screenshots offline and i am exporting my trade logs from Rithmic everyday so i can review my trades again in a later stage if i wanted to.

I will report back here once i have lost the account or reached the funded account.

It took some time but i finally made it, i have reached the $3000 target today.

I am no longer trading the system i was using on NQ, it is still profitable, on paper, but i was missing around 15%-20% of the trades and because of this i was unable to make a decent profit. The system still has good potential but i think it has to be fully automated to avoid the large number of missed trades.

In the last 2-3 weeks i have been trading a system that i have been using since a long time (multiple years) but stopped using recently in an effort to try (semi) automated trading. I am still going to work on the system but no longer going to waste my trading time on it, at least not until i get it fully automated.

I was $600 away from my draw down limit when i decided to go back to the system i knew and used to trade and in 2 weeks time i managed to make $4000 without to much risk.

Once i have the funded account i will keep trading as i have been doing the last 2 weeks, meaning trading only NQ and ES.

@RDK91 Congratulation on your achievement. I've been following your progress. It is good to see that you pass OneUp in time. You also motivated me to take Gauntlet. It looks like you are one of the first ppl who passed it.

First day of the funded account, total profit $347,1.
It looks like i am done for today unless i see volatility picking up later today, however i do not expect that to happen.

I might start a new journal for my funded account but i am no longer going to do daily updates, maybe weekly.
Not sure yet.

Edit: For some reason my screenshot isn't showing.

I wonder if you could share with us any issues that you have experienced with One Up since you have been trading with a funded account please. I have seen complaints with the Better Business Bureau that suggest the rules outlined on the website can change and that getting paid for reaching goals is difficult. I dont know if these were just sour grapes but if you could share your experiences that would great. Thanks!

I have never heard about getting paid for reaching goals.
There are some extra rules in the funded account like 50% of the volume you traded during the evaluation account and be positive after 15 days.

There is another thread here about a guy who had a funded account and he managed to withdraw some profit without any problems.

I never experienced any problems before with OneUp.

Thanks for the info - I'm glade to see they are legit. The word goals is probably incorrect, I was referring to the minimum targets depending on the level of account funded.

Hey RDK91, how has your experience with OUT on the funded account been so far?

Would you say OUT is reliable when it comes to paying out? I've avoided OUT b/c of their shady background but hopefully that is not the case because otherwise, their rules are much better than TST's.

I have not yet made any withdrawals, however there is another thread on this forum in which the funded trader made a withdrawal (i believe it was $1000) and received the money without any issues.

good to know.

also, i'm a fellow foreigner (nonresident alien for tax purposes) and i have one more question - if i'm understanding this correctly, with Oneuptrader or Topsteptrader, you submit a W8-BEN once you're funded and you pay tax to your home country, not the US.

but with E2T, since they make you a limited partner and give you a schedule K-1, you pay tax to the US and then report the tax to your home country's tax authority to avoid double taxation (assuming there's an existing tax treaty).

is this correct?

With E2T you do not pay taxes in the US, you only need to report your taxes to the IRS, you always need to pay taxes in the country where you live.

MES capital is based in the BVI and they do not require a W8-BEN.

wow thanks. doesn't this mean you have to submit a W8-BEN for E2T since they are based in Delaware?

wow thanks. doesn't this mean you have to submit a W8-BEN for E2T since they are based in Delaware?

Yes, with E2T you need to file a W8-BEN and you need to report your income from the K1 to the IRS.

Congratulations on hitting the profit target and getting funded.
Can you talk about what you are looking for in a potential trade.
What factors were in place when trades work and do not work?
What do you look for when in a trade that changes your view and exit?

I look at the same levels everyday, i trade both breakouts and reversals from those levels, most of the time the reversals since i find it harder to trade breakouts.

I work with fixed stops and targets all the time and most of the time i try to sit tight until my target or stop gets hit, however under some circumstances like fundamentals or lack of volatility i might exit earlier.

No, i still have the funded account, however i just didn't see the use of keep posting my PnL every day since i am not going to share my trading system/charts.

My next update will be when i make my first withdrawal or indeed do lose the account.
In the meantime i will be responding to any questions anyone has about trading with OneUp/MES.

I also just hit the profit target for the 250k account (however I still have to trade 6 days more).

Did you experience any hick-ups or issues during the funding process, or did everything go smoothly?

Just something for the other guys that are trying with the combine (applies also to topstep I guess):
I can recommend to donít trade the lot size you are allowed to. Risk management wise itís basically given that you will fail, if you donít have perfect entries.
Of the 25lots, that I was allowed to trade, I never exceeded 10 lots traded at the same time(most time traded 5).

Congratulations on reaching the target. No i never had any issues with the process to get my funded account. However i have never made a withdrawal before so can't comment on that.

I agree with not using the full trade size. I trade the 50K account and 90% of my positions are 1 contract, 10% are 2 contracts, never more.

That is awesome. Do you trade this account only, or do you trade other accounts in conjunction?

Slowly easing into your own account is a very smart idea. Especially when you're talking about 6 contract trades which can get dicey if caught on the wrong side of the trade.

So I just received my live account credentials. But...the orders are not real.
Did you check if your orders are real and if you are actually trading a live account?

As i understood your orders are not really going to the exchange but instead your orders get copied to the funding partners live account. They also can decide to not route your orders to their live account whenever they want, however you will be able to withdraw any profits made, even if the orders were not routed to the live account since they do that at their own discretion.

Thanks for the clarification, that makes sense.

I am up $575 for the first day with the account. Hopefully will continue like that.

First goal: Buffer of 10k and, from there on trade 3 lots.
Second goal: Buffer of 20k, from there on trade 6 lots
>25k trade 10 lot, until I may fall back down below 25k

I trade the 250k account. So I could go up to 25, but is too risky.

So far I am happy, no issues here.

I made a test withdrawal of $1,500 without any issue. Withdrawal got approved and I received the money the next day.

However this was just a test and I will continue building up the account until $25k profits, to have a buffer. Only then I will trade bigger contract sizes that 5 and take some more riskier trades. For now itís building up slow and steady.

@Meliora

Quick question - if you don't withdraw, then the trailing drawdown doesn't actually trail the account value? I mean, if you are say +25k in the green, you could have a loss of, say, -20k and you'd still be fine with privileges on the account? That's what I understood from your message, but didn't know it worked that way, so I just wanted to confirm I got it right.

Thanks!

Correct. Trailing drawdown stops trailing at initial balance (250k in my case).

Hello,

This applies only to funded, during the combine you can trade news:
1) You can trade at some news and some news not.
For example: FOMC Meeting Minutes you canít trade Equity Indexes like ES from 1 Minute before to 1 minute after. But you can trade other instruments during that times.

2) the drawdown is calculated live, including open positions. I strongly recommend: trade the account up slowly, build up a buffer that you donít withdraw -> issue with drawdown basically eliminated, if you donít mess up badly. But you should have your own rules in place to prevent that.

Yes. If News are at 1pm, you have to be flat at 12:59pm and can start trading again at 01:01pm
