Thought I would share my journal that I use on a daily basis. This is still a work in progress b/c (as allot of you already know from my previous post) that I'm rebuilding my system after losing all of my data.
I believe in automating as much as possible to eliminate the need for extra leg work when it's not necessary. This journal is designed for E-Minis only and can be modified for anything that you would like to use it for. Of course, you would have to make the changes and reprogram the Macro code(VBA Code).
Worksheet Names and what they stand for:
JE - Jul 2009 ------ Journal Entries for the month of July. I added some example data.
JR - Jul 2009 ------ Journal Records for the month of July. Only updates from the beginning of the month to the current date. Does not update past todays date. You can clear out the data(except for the dates) and Update the worksheet again if you had made adjustments/changes to your Journal Entries.
On the Journal Entries worksheet, any part of the header(in light yellow) can be changed. Everything else updates automatically. When trading Multiple Contracts, use the alphabet to indicate groupings of contracts traded for a trade. The reason for this is that each contract can have its own exit point. Start out using "a" then "b" then "c" etc...for groupings. I already used "a" so the next multi-contract trade would use "b". If not trading multiple contracts then just leave the field blank.
For Long Trades I use "Lng" and for Short Trades I use "Shrt". Not sure why I abbreviated these but after awhile you'll get used to them. If not, just modify the code and you'll be all set.
When creating a new day in the Journal Entries, just copy the gray colored line and place it after your last trade, then type in the next trading days date. Now you are all set for the next trading day.
When a new month comes along, just copy the worksheets into the new months worksheet, rename it(using the abbreviated names), and create the trading dates(in the Journal Records) and create the first trading day in the Journal Entries. It's easier than you think. Once done you can always copy and create additional months ahead of time.
If the macro doesn't work, you'll need to change your security settings within Excel to medium so that you can enable the macro to work.
It's always a work in progress as new things appear or old ways just need to be modified. Hope this helps anybody new or old to Trading.
I'm looking to add one other page in this journal. It will be similiar to the monthly worksheet but instead take all monthly data and incorporate it into one Main worksheet. This will give you an overall performance perview on how your trading direction is really going. Feel free to download and/or make changes.
Okay, here’s an updated version of my Trading Journal. I’ve added all the spreadsheets for the rest of the year 2009 including Main 2009. Main 2009 just combines all the months information into one worksheet. This is nice because you don’t have to go searching month to month to look up information.
I'm always a sucker for a good excel file. Thanks for posting. I'll use this to keep track of my trading. This tool will change the way I reflect on my trading.
Added a couple of columns of data on the JR(Journal Records) pages. Cleaned up the Headers as well. I added ROI(Return On Investment) on the JE(Journal Entry) pages.
Feel free to download and/or make changes. I'm always opened for sugguestions.
I removed "Over All Performance" on the "JR" pages and added "Over All Winners" and "Over All Losers" in a percentage format. "Over ALL Performance" was kindof misleading if you didn't know how to read it so "Over All Winners" and "Over All Losers" should clear things up.
