A journal is a great way to hold yourself accountable even though it feels like the worst thing in the world when a strategy fails.

Although this is a SIM journal I intend to trade as if it were real to help validate my own strategy. This should be a period
of no longer than two weeks before putting some cash on the line.
I really hope it works...

In the past I have found a propensity for traders to move towards more and more exotic financial vehicles to find 'the one'
The same can be true of indicators, more and more mathematically complex visualisation of the same underlying data.
I've studied many indicators, created my own, studied patterns and probabilities.
I've Created charts that are a forest of trends, Fibonacci and Elliot waves.
Not dismissing this of course as each to their own and if it works use it, for me personally it's not the way I want to approach it. I want to strip it all back.

General Overview
I intend to keep it simple, really simple.
Basically follow that classic piece of advice, follow the trend
Don't try and be too smart, don't try to second guess the market.
Sometimes I feel this is the worst thing to do is over stimulate your brain with information.
  • Trade ES
  • 1 Trade Per Day
  • 2 Point Target
  • Trade using 5m chart - (Showing 2-3 Days)
  • Trade at around 08:35-08:40
  • Trade window 25-30 mins max
  • Stop not sure (really needs one)
  • Once a trade is completed, go do something else immediately. No idle hands and over confidence situation.

The point target is currently arbitrary, I just based it upon something that I thought should be achievable and yield a reasonable result that can scale.

I'm using ThinkorSwim Paper Trading.

Not much to show on this chart, was a bit of an after thought but thought I better take one.

So thought dump:

Recent low few points below, looks like obvious support (or too obvious?) Just go for short as seems common logic.
Marketwatch heatmap sentiment is negative (although I don't know if this is delayed or not, suspecting it is delayed)
No big gap in opening.

[ORDER] SELL: 08:35 - 2,090.50

Accidentally sold gain when placed Buy (not used to software) amusingly was at 2,090.50, doubling position.

[TARGET] BUY for 2088.25, 2 Points + Fees

[ORDER] BUY: 08:43 - 2,088.25

Done for the day: +2.25, Leave

Hate looking at the chart later and see a +10 point opportunity hah
Be happy with your strategy, greed is always a downfall.

Word of advice, ThinkOrSwim is garbage. Trading TOS sim vs live trading is night and day. It's hands down the worst sim environment I've ever seen.

Get NinjaTrader. You can download it for free, and sign up for a free data (trial). It's real time data, accounts for bid and ask, order queue, entry delays, partial fills, slippage, etc. The best sim I've ever seen.

And how is it going? I'm trading /ES as well. Only 1 contract. My goal is to someday trade 100 lots.

Been stuck in meetings during market open, no time to trade within my window of opportunity.

Just had a look now, looked like I missed a great morning for a trade.

08:10 Added S/R lines using 30m Charts
08:30 Gap Open
08:35 Positive Start, Watch to see if indecisive.
08:37 SELL @ 2111.75, TARGET BUY @ 2109.50 (+2.25)
08:38 TARGET HIT, P/L +2.25

Done for the day.

08:18 Huge Pre Drop Gap, extending S/R lines, chart looks too many lines but interesting the intersection from previous days lines.
08:33 Sure will get some more downside
08:36 SOLD @ 2093.25, TARGET BUY @ 2091
08:37 TARGET HIT P/L (+2.25)
08:38 Done for the day.

Happy Hunting.

Trade: 15th June

Bad day, but now a good time to look at STOP-LOSS seriously!
Funny I was just thinking that I need a bad trade to focus on this, erm thanks...

08:16 Removed previous S/R, Added new S/R, looked at 4h/180D as well.
08:18 Big gap down in after hours
08:22 Pushing down to near 15 points, will come back once market opens.
08:30 Wow should have sold pre market, already down to my lowest S/R, but that would be out of strategy.
08:35 Already hit low 2,067, more down or bounce?
08:36 SOLD @2,064.50 TARGET @2,062.25
08:57 Bit of a tease with 2,062.75 low. So what should stop loss be 2072?
09:24
Feels like it's slipping away, holding this longer than my strategy timeframe, should adhere to stop-loss?
Give it till 10:00?
10:00 Well that sucks, should have gone with the stop-loss. Head in the sand moment, what SIM is for lol
Let it play out for analysis.
AH: BUY @ 2069.25 -- P/L: -4.75

So ended up with a bit of arrogance or just simple wishful thinking that we would go lower. With real money this would have been stressful.

Good day, real slow though.

08:13 Looking at charts, should you look at after hours? Helps me fill out S/R. Chart done.
08:20 So AH pushing towards S/R 2,072.50
08:35 Moving up over 2,075.
08:36 Disabled AH data, 2,078 Next 2,083 Next+
08:41 BUY PLACED @ 2,080
09:00 What a slow day...
14:42 SOLD @ 2,083 P/L: +3.00

So been travelling and now in PST timezone so it's a rather uncivilised 06:30 trade start.

However woke up and went for it. Have started using bracket orders to enforce stops.
Original startegy does need to evolve, think original time frames were too tight.

08:45 Updated S/R lines
08:49 OCO BUY @ 2,112.25, Target - Inside next R, Stop outside of next S
09:29 SELL @ 2,115.50

P/L: +3.25

Having difficulty waking up before 7 (my time)

08:48 woke up, made a cup of tea, updated S/R
gap up open then returned to S
08:55 impulse says buy so i'm shorting
08:58 SELL @ 2,099 - STOP above R, Target just inside next S
09:23 TARGET HIT @ 2,095
P/L: +4.00

So strategy feels like it's evolving, moving away from placing trades super early, also trying to be a bit more relaxed. Have moved away from arbitrary targets and using my S/R lines to guide values and use bracket to enforce Stop.

Happy Hunting everyone.

So it went badly today, no excuse really should have been an easy one.

08:46 Massive Gap Down -20 Points
08:51 Rising, touching S/R, probably a good time for a quick short
09:11 Moving back down - (should have made the short earlier)
09:18 BUY @ 2,078
09:19 Regretting it already, not sure why I bought, nothing to hold back gravity here, maybe itching to get into market. Heading out
10:01 So yeah STOP hit P/L: -4.0 lol
Should have been an easy short ride, missed my perceived entry time then lost my way.

Happy Hunting.

Greece not good but slimmer of hope now.
09:19 Sell @ 2,056, Target: 2,050.25 - Stop: 2,063
...Not much going on...
11:23 Target Hit, P/L: +5.75

Happy Hunting.

Stop not sure (really needs one)

Please, whatever you do, don't ever trade without a stop. It is the single most important thing that can protect you from certain disater if your internet goes down, you have some kind of medical emergency or some other catastrophic event.

I am also from the UK and have an internet dongle from Three for emergencies. It is a pay as you go and I have it sitting near my computer with a top up voucher, so if you lose your internet for any reason, you can plug the dongle in, apply the top up and get back online. This is particulalry useful if you are in a trade and you want to make sure that everything is OK. If you have roaming on your mobile (which I haven't) you could also use this.

I also have a battery backup for my PC in case the electric fails.

Although I only trade very small positions, just one contract for a scalp, I think that it is good to have these sensible precautiosn in place.

I will look forward to following your journal - don't forget to check mine out!

I would agree with Chris on this, Ninja Trader is very good and it is free whilst you are in SIM. If you use ninja Trader, there is a very good third party site for downloading replay data. it can be a bit 'clunky' to do in Ninja, but this website makes it really easy Ninjatrader Market Replay - Home

Once you are ready to trade live, as you are also in the UK (and in Manchester - the best part!) I would recommend Kinetick for data (I pay $56 per month for the CME Globex Level 1 and Kinetick basic service). I use Interactive Brokers for brokerage with commission at $4.04 per round turn - they have offices in London and you are protected under UK legislation.

Couldn't login yesterday to ThinkorSwim, issue my side.

Today's Notes:

08:46 Update Lines, Market Gap Open Down. Nothing to hold back gravity.
08:49 Going Short @ 2,056.50. Before I could update my bracket, default target hit for +1 Points in 6 seconds. Bonus I guess.
My rules state only 1 trade a day however this was an accident. P/L: +1

08:50 Going Short @ 2052.75, Stop above SR, Target Below next SR
10:42 Closed @ 2,046.50 - P/L: +6.25

Day Total: +7.25
July Total: 18.25

Going to start taking screenshots with bracket order illustrated as more interesting.

09:20 Moved Target a bit closer to the SR line.

08:52 Buy @ 2,088 (See Image for Target/Stop)
08:53 Moved Stop lower a little
11:10 Not much going on, tight sideways range. Let it ride.
14:25 Target Hit @ 2,093

08:46 Gap up Opening ~+10
08:58 Gravity taking effect, feel like there will be a little downside. Going short @ 2,113 (Sure I put a limit of 2,113.50)
See Chart for Target/Stop
09:10-15 Annoying could have taken a cheeky +2.5 Points @ 2,110
11:27 Looks like it's been oscillating upwards. STOP probably get hit soon.
13:44 Stop Hit @ 2,116.75

Today: - 3.75
July: 24.75

Feel like perhaps I got too greedy with my target, could have had 2.5 which would have been inline with my original strategy however the previous week of bigger movements had given me a taste for greater swings.

08:58 Small downward trend from open.
Short @ 2,115.50
9:15 Annoying just missed out on target by 0.5 Pts, 2112.25. Going to adjust S/R lines from most recent data. Is my target like yesterday too greedy?
14:45 Stopped out @ 2,119.50

P/L: -4
July: 20.75

Feels like deja-vu, going to tighten up next trade if not volatile.

So going to reduce target today after previous sessions...

08:46 ES gap up then gave back a little. Overall sentiment feels positive. Sector summary looking more red than green though right now.
08:59 My minds telling me quick SELL, but my body's telling me BUY
09:01 Trend is down
09:20 BUY @ 2,117.00
Bracket +2.25 / -2
09:27 Target Hit +2.25

P/L: +2.25
July: 23.00

Well target hit easily, annoyingly pretty much the perfect entry for going long. Ah well, retrospect. How to know the upside potential?

08:49 Drop Gap, bounce back up to 2nd S/R. Earnings season...
09:00 Trending back up towards 1 S/R below previous close. Follow the immediate trend or the question what is going to keep holding this up?
09:07 Going LONG @ 2,109.50 Bracket -2 / + 2.25
09:38 STOP HIT

P/L: -2.00
July: 21.00

So I managed to pretty much to go LONG at the worst time, hate writing this but need to keep myself honest and reflect.

I hope it helps Charlie.

So today is my first TS trade, find it's taking a bit of getting used to after ToS.
Got up a bit earlier today as wanted trade earlier in the morning session, went back to a 4 point target/stop bracket.

I had reduce this down however the following Emini Manifesto gave me the courage to put back up.
Emini Trading Manifesto | Emini-Watch.com

08:40 Jumped on, downward trend, thinking of going for a quick short.
08:44 Short @ 2,067 +4/-4 Bracket
08:50 Target Hit +4 Points

P/L: 4.00
July: 25.00

Probably going to play around with TS for a bit, get more familiar with the platform.

Couple of trades today, more just experimenting with my new found tools. I hate to get distracted like that however if I can learn something of benefit then well worth it, looking at tick charts and time and sales info. Learning a bit of easy language as I go. I didn't create a time log as got a bit distracted staring at data.

Made 2 trades today, goes against my style however I was trying out some ideas later, hence the 2nd trade.
Used a lower frame tick for actual entry and was using T&S to try and get a feel for direction.

Possibly just blind luck lol

08:40 Watching charts and Time & Sales
08:45 Feel like things are shifting to Long, Buying @ 2,101.50 Setting +4/-4

Thanks: 3 given, 21 received

08:35 Charts open, ready for action, have stopped drawing S/R now, don't feel it's necessary now.
08:55 Feels like the tide is turning, potentially over zealous buying. Looking at going short
08:58 Short @ 2,096.50, +4/-4
09:00 Reduced target to +2
09:05 Target Hit P/L: +2.00

Today: +2.00
August: +2.00

In retrospect could have held out for that +4, happy to take gains though.

Looking at shifting to real trading next week.
