Welcome, Guest!

This forum was established to help traders (especially futures traders) by openly sharing indicators, strategies, methods, trading journals and discussing the psychology of trading.

We are fundamentally different than most other trading forums:
  • We work extremely hard to keep things positive on our forums.
  • We do not tolerate rude behavior, trolling, or vendor advertising in posts.
  • We firmly believe in openness and encourage sharing. The holy grail is within you, it is not something tangible you can download.
  • We expect our members to participate and become a part of the community. Help yourself by helping others.

Traderfish's TST $50,000 combine

Here we go again.

This will be my second combine, I blew my first in a matter of days due largely to me using as a playground to test some stuff out + silly risk management. That combined with my computer messing up during a big negative run on the ES sealed that for me. I am not too upset about it as my first combine was always going to be a 'testing ground'. This one is the real deal.

The Plan

TST require you to achieve a "Trading Average greater than 0 for each product traded " in order to pass a combine. I am going to make things easy on myself and stick to one instrument, ES. Why ES? I just like it :-) It has good liquidity, conforms well to technical analysis, and has enough setups during the course of a trading session to keep interesting. What's not to like

Risk Management

Loss limits/Drawdowns
It is my firm believe that the difference between a successful trader and a poor one is good RM. To that end I am tightening TSTs own rules. Largest losing day and max daily loss limit is allowed to be 1000, with a max drawdown of 2000 . Straight up I think that max daily is WAY too high for an account with a max 2000 drawdown. I am imposing a loss limit of 650 per day on myself, as I think that gives a much more balanced picture.

Position sizes
TST say max position size is 5 contracts. Trading 5 contracts on CL with a $650 daily loss limit IMO is financial suicide. At $50 a tick only a couple of bad trades will put an end to your session VERY quickly. I am going to be following TST's own Funded Trader Scaling Plan. Even though I will be allowed to trade 5 contacts for the last $1000 leg, I doubt I will do more than 3 unless there are exceptional circumstances as 5 is just too much risk to take on during the combine.

Other RM notes
Without going into detail on my trading style/plan, stops will be very tight (2-3 ticks) and I will be actively monitoring PL intratrade by showing PL on Ninjatrader DOM and charttrader.

I'll be using Ninjatrader. No platform is perfect, but as far as the available options on TST go, I think Ninjatrader is a good one. NT8 should be out soon (fingers crossed) and it looks pretty funky. It being TST's preferred platform also helps here.

End Game
I am currently self employed and sick of my career. When I get funded by TST I fully plan on turning trading into a full time business for myself. Ambitious? Yes. Unachievable? Nope.

And that is that. I will be updating this daily as I get my results from TST (6pm CT), so good luck to me and lets go get rich
