I decided to share some YM trades here as I believe it helps to keep on the right track to consistent results. After some loses and long time struggle my day trading account fell under $1,500 I decided to do my trading as simple as possible. The only option was to switch to lower timeframe and make one trade per day. This approach provides enough space for long term surviving, enough opportunity to participate on intra-day market movements and finally turned my equity up. Ok, here is the plan:

1) after market opens, seek for prevailing market direction (momentum if you like)
2) enter on first valid signal (correction)
3) wait for the result, make a screenshot, add notes, shut the platform off

that's all

some tech stuff now
entry hours: 8.30 - 9.30 or after FOMC statement
stop: 14 ticks
target: 25 ticks
b/e+1: after reaching 15 ticks open profit
daily risk plan: $70 per contract
no. trades - 1 (b/e traded is not counted)
tools - S/R levels, other timeframes, EMAs
avoid trading at 'red' economic news

targets:
1) build up for adding more contracts while keeping 5% daily risk limit
2) keep doing 1 trade per day
3) make a weekly report

Started with 1 trade 8 Dec 14. Here are some trade stats and today's play. Without errors made equity would be slightly higher. Trade less make more

oh, it's a tough job when playing low timeframes, chances of getting slapped are so high...

Finished this week with a poor trade. First signal was actually valid as it was confirmed by double correction so quite good opportunity for SR breakout (or at least breakout failure)

Mon - OK
Tue - OK
Wed - rush into trade, took first correction even it looked poor and I actually hesitated
Thu - OK
Fri - missed opportunity then aggressive entry despite no valid signal presented

results: 2xPT, 3xSL

lessons learned, targets for next weeks:
- no need to rush into trade and trade immediately after market opens, rather wait for clean valid signal and obvious market direction
- monitor emotions after missed opportunity and write them down on the paper immediately

nice short trade today, it's sometimes difficult to take the trade after such move but considering momentum, no other option

last week score is -15 :-)

Mon - OK
Tue - OK
Wed - OK (2 trades)
Thu - OK
Fri - impulsive trading, trying to finish week profitable and got slapped

Moved to B/E earlier and then tried to re-enter but entry price was almost the same and price action was bit messy but managed to stop doing shit and did not exceed 5% daily risk limit

week 9 summary :-)

Mon - OK
Tue - first BE, second trade too close to SR (low potential) - SL
Wed - no trading
Thu - expected breakout pullback BPB but failed - short signal not confirmed but entered
Fri - OK

Despite some execution errors I am ok about that result since there is no 'profit gap' ... next valid signals were losers too ...

trading week 12 went quite well with no significant events. Just missed profit on Tuesday due to entry slippage Next time in the event of a more significant slippage I rather adjust my PT accordingly

Monday missed signals sent weekly result to break-even (profit gap 200). Also bit aggressive trade on Wednesday considering that obvious swing in premarket hours

another break-even week on YM due to some execution 'errors'

Mon - Ok
Tue - bit early, could have waited, but OK
Wed - could not connect to CQG, conn went on just before OPEN, entered long too early while did NOT have valid signal confirmed ... when I wanted to scratch it immediately, CQG disconnected again - SL
Thu - OK
Fri - first trade BE then not 'valid' signal long - SL

PL +12 :-)
This week large profit gap 600!!

I realized that I too much focus on results so I too much 'try' to make new equity highs which is in combination with such a low time-frame quite counter-productive. This reminds me something from Jack Schwager's Market Wizards:

"In trading, just as in archery, whenever there is effort, force, straining, struggling, or trying, it's wrong."

Finished week no. 16 on Wed B/E, Mon - P, Tue - L, Wed - L. I consider this to be a last trade on YM. Next week switching to CL with bigger account and higher timeframe but the same system :-)

Since I started with 1k account and managed to build up 1.7k I consider this to be a success but realized that I tried to play almost the hardest way possible on such a low timeframe which is not good if you lack some important skills :-)

Will get back soon ...

Time to continue my log. Despite some struggling trading CL and YM using range 6 causing not nice drawdown I am back to YM range 4 which seem to fit me best so far. So believe it or not I am starting like nothing happened since 8th Dec 2014

Few upgrades to my approach:
  • shortened trading session to 830 to 900 since most of the action is happening in the first half usually
  • got rid of higher timeframes (only daily chart left on my screen to see overall market mood - just to stare at it and learn; no trading decisions based on that)
  • modified BE + 1 to BE + 2 (does not affect results negatively)

What I am still struggling with and need to improve during next sessions:
  • fear of letting market go without me if there is a poor signal - impatience. From a long term perspective, patience makes a lot of $$$ while impatience takes ...
  • adrenaline rush which I believe negatively impacts my decision making process (cannot fully replicate mindset of SIM trading yet ) Trading and the Adrenaline Rush
  • occasionally taking trade that is not a valid signal

What I have learned so far:
  • Trading is all about your fears that needs to be solved and ego that needs to go on vacation
  • Very simple approach can work very well
  • Consistency in taking signals (how you perceive them) and managing risk is the key to success. Anytime you deviate, the market will remind you
  • Focusing on goals and results instead of focusing on the process and 'present moment' can be counter-productive (at least for me)
  • Knowing somebody who is already successful helps very much
  • Breaking MM rules has always a negative impact. No need to test it again
  • If you truly believe something it becomes reality

I will now focus mainly on watching 'what I feel' during session and try to make notes. Maybe it will help to get deeper and solve some causes of it. Will update log daily if possible.

Mon - the second trade was really a poor trade. Not valid signal since obvious range is occurring (no swinging down). Ignored the context and got slapped
Tue - ok

Last 10 months replay test stats + weekly stats made on the right side of the chart. Made many tests on YM, also on CL. All good. Only missing part is patience and discipline

6/7/2015 - first short after open can be considered as a valid signal (it gives strong momentum change) but during my testing I always omitted signals that were breaking EMA that much. The second signal I took was technically correct but short party already finished. Traces could be seen in chart dynamics but one never know what happens next in the market...

7/7/2015 - after open I expected cleaner deeper pullback. Did not like jumping right at the bottom ... then avg daily range reached - expected revers

9/7/2015 - market made huge move in pre-market reaching avg daily range at opening so my expectation was for market top and reverse but reverse not confirmed before nineish - no trades.

System is supposed to be played more mechanically. If I took all signals after open agressively in the direction of EMAs I would be nicely in profit this week (who knew that on Sunday??) but considering I have 5 stops left I will be very selective in what I take. I want to see everything aligned. Not sure if its a good choice but we will see. At least I feel I am learning some patience here and since I had some problems with that I think it's not that bad for now

Hi,
you wrote: "I will be very selective ... "

I am scared if i hear this. That mean you are going to filter entries using your
subjective opinion? Why to be selective only if you have 5 stops left?

Situation:
You are running quite mechanics system. That generates few stops. Than you are going to be selective. Selection is based on what? - If its on some indicators, you need to have a statistic calculation to do that. If its on your opinion, you have to be very experienced.

You should think more complexly. Making decision to risk your money on impalpable evidence is very hard.

Today both trades (in the direction after open and reverse) had odds in my favor but considering avg daily range reached and situation on daily chart (reaching prev days tops) I evaluated that odds for reverse are higher so I will rather wait. It was not just a "feeling". I know that the second setup if occured could finish as a losing trade but who cares ... System is subjective since its a discretionary approach. not mechanical that can be programmed or described on a piece of paper. Every time a signal occurs I have to decide whether I like it at that moment and put my chip on the table or there is "something" wrong and I will rather wait for a "better" setup. All I do is trying to make sure that each setup I take has odds in my favor at that moment (yes I plan for the most possible scenario which is not necessary). Over series of trades it's just a different P/L distribution (hopefully slightly better). Maybe I'm wrong...

10/7/2015 - seems market is really uncertain where to go. 2 fails go higher, 2 fails go lower and now ... where to go? Got a nice price for long so tried. After stop possible consideration for reverse - ha market is copying yesterday's scenario ...

After some considerations yesterday and today I have decided to switch to SIM mode and continue in this mode. I really don't like risk level at this moment. I feel it negatively affects whole game and decision making process. Will continue doing my journal not because I want to test the system but I want to keep proper routine until I will be able to switch back to live again.

20/7/2015 - started new week with a losing trade. Bit hesitated considering that micro-range established before market open but there was enough space to session high (20 ticks). Also nice chance for double-trade. When I get stopped out I can seek for a short opportunity

28/07/2015 - had 30 ticks PT exactly at low touched two times. In live market I usually got filled in these situations even with just touching my LMT order since I have usually a good position in a FIFO queue. Unfortunately this is the drawback of SIM trading - unreal fills

31/07/2015 - first trade finished B/E so tried re-enter short and got stopped - there was still room to avg daily range

Weekly PL = 200,80
Monthly PL = 498,28

Before switching back to SIM because of FEAR of losing I missed 2 beautiful profitable trades right after open. That would be a nice monthly profit of 790,28.

I plan to continue SIM to practice routine, build up account and do my log and switch back to live in autumn.

Lesson learned? Fit your trading (risk tolerance) to your nerves as much as you can and make taking trades comfortable so you know that even if you fuck up a little bit you have a lot of room to fix it....

21/8/2015 - interesting ... missed SL by 1 tick then not recorded PT fill even if market jumped over by 1 tick and then re-touched ... considering this to be a profitable trade since SIM fills are completely odd ...

week 16-20/11

WPL +240

funded account and made some $$ trading futures spreads so can continue live next week. everything stays the same as trading SIM (got rid of some technicals) except switching back to SierraChart. seems that fits me better

week 23-27/11

despite TG I waited for signal every day. Couldn't enter on Tue because of technical problems (wrong TIF settings). That sent this week PL to negative
