I am entering the October Trading Journal Contest but NOT to win! Why? First, I am not ready for an account that size. I need to be profitable trading only a few contracts before I move up to trading 15 contracts. Second, I already am trading with TopStepTrader. My Combine Size is $50,000 with a max position size of 5 contracts. Third, I will miss about a week of trading during the month as I travel to Colorado and Wyoming. So, why enter you ask?

Good question! I am hoping that the process of keeping this journal here and being accountable to the community will help me to become a more disciplined trader. Basically, I am starting this journal here at futures.io (formerly BMT) to help reach my goal of becoming a consistently profitable day trader.

Recently, my trading has been lacking discipline and really stinks. In fact, I have almost blown my current Combine by being dangerously close to my max drawdown limit. As a result, I have lost confidence and have been losing the battle to fear. This has led to some bad habits such as hesitation and moving of stops. So, in an attempt to correct this I am setting some new goals and rules for myself.

First, try to dig myself out of this deep hole and save this Combine. Donít even worry about getting funded. Second, trade only 1 product crude (CL). Next, focus on my entries. To help me do this I am reducing my catastrophic stop loss to -6 ticks. Fourth, for the next couple of months at least I am just striving for base hits. Thatís right, no home runs, just singles. In fact, I am just going to be scalping between 5 & 10 ticks on every trade with a goal of plus 20-30 ticks a day. Fifth, NO trading more than 2 contracts until I have raised my confidence level and have a proven track record. Finally, always use an ATM strategy to enter a position. Targets will consist of +5, +8 or +10 ticks. The initial stop will be -6 ticks. The stop will automatically move at +4 ticks to -2 ticks from the entry price. In addition, the +10 Target ATM will move the stop one more time at +10 ticks to +5 ticks just in case the order does not fill.

Looking forward to the journey with you all!

Yesterday, I tried trading my live account exactly the way I intend to trade my Combine account. For the most part I did pretty good. I took most of the trade signals until I reached my goals. I was in the zone and focused. I know that the daily profit goal is small but as stated I am in a rebuilding mode right now. Not only did I have a good winning percentage but I also kept my average losses smaller than my average gains. The following stats are provided:

Product Traded: CL

Total # of Trades: 8
# of Winning Trades: 6
# of Losing Trades: 2
Percent Profitable: 75%

Gross Profit: $340.56
Gross Loss: $87.36
Commissions/Fees: $36.80
Net Profit: $253.20

Average Winner: $56.76
Average Loser: $43.68
Max Drawdown: $87.36

Hi BoltTrader,

It seems we're trading quite similar style, scalping the crude. Do you plan to post your setups? Just made me curious

I will but for this week and part of next it will be hit and miss. For instance, I was gone today taking my wife to the Doctor across town and tomorrow I have to get the car ready to travel to Wyoming. Once I am back from Wyoming I will be able to be more consistent.

Well, I messed up last night. Placed a trade in the wee hours for fun wanting to see what would happen when I woke up. Only problem was that I thought I was placing the trade in my sim account and it turned out to be in my Combine. Of course, it didn't work out. I am under the gun and whereas I wasn't planning to trade the Combine today because of having little time in front of the computer, now I must.

I made one change on the Chart Trader Properties so this won't happen again. I changed the simulation color so that it is different from the Combine color. More importantly, I need to pay closer attention (especially during the early morning hours) to what I am doing.

I was able to place a scalp trade for +10 ticks around the CL opening. However, I missed 2 more setups as I was at the auto shop. I am hoping to get at least one or two more trades before I have to leave again.

I finally was able to take another scalp trade for +10. One more and I will call it for the day.

Bias: Short

Been in a Bear Flag Channel. Had setups at all 3 of my entry zones. Expecting price to break of out channel and move south but we will see. If it does first target is 89.06.

Everything did as expected. However, I was not able to execute due to long distance phone call. Bummer. Took pullback trade. Stopped to the tick. I should have checked my mid-term chart and I would have been fine with my entry being 1 tick before my original stop and trade would have worked out perfectly. Loss -6 ticks.

Next target: 88.81 to 88.76

Just came to my charts and saw an opportunity to start the day off with a winner. Traded 2 contracts on CL for +5 ticks each. I could have gone for +10 but I just wanted to start the day on a positive note.

Missed 1st test which worked. Took 2nd test. Didn't like the way it was looking. Closed for +2 ticks on 2 contracts. It was a smart decision. I would have been stopped out at -6 ticks.

The trend has been so strong down that I only took this bounce off target area for +5 ticks again with 2 contracts.

Elected to pass over 2 entry signals because of being so close to Crude Oil Inventories report.

Just took another +5 with 2 contracts as price reached a key level on my longer term chart. Normally, I would have taken +10 ticks but the market is in such a strong downtrend and I was still close to the news. Price still determining which way it wants to go but it looks like we may have the beginning of a retracement move.

I blew it. Was going for +10 ticks with 2 contracts but trade was taking too long to move so I closed at +4 ticks. Of course, it moved right after to retest PLOD.

Well, I am trading with about 3 1/2 hours sleep last night. Probably a mistake. I lowered my trading size back to 1 contract instead of 2 and my first two trades were losses. In the first one I used a market order instead of my usual limit order and as a result got in to early and was stopped out to the tick exactly as the trade proceeded to hit my target. In the second trade I went for +10 ticks everything was perfect except when price hit my target it didn't fill. I gave it some time but once I saw that price was reversing I moved stop to +1 and was stopped out. So far, with commissions and fees I am down $57.36. As per my rules, I am taking a break away from the charts with the 2 losses in a row. I attached a picture of my 2 median renko chart instead of the 3 min chart for you to look at.

2 losses to the tick. I am not seeing things correctly. Time for a long break and go back and get some sleep. Its the smart move and in accordance with my plan. Down $184.72 with commissions.

Well, I got up after a couple more hours of sleep. I should have stuck to my rules and accepted the loss for the day and traded my sim account but instead I thought I would look at it as a new day. Big mistake! Kept looking for the market to reverse instead of listening to the charts. Here is my final results for the day:

Product Traded: CL

Total # of Trades: 13
# of Winning Trades: 4
# of Losing Trades: 9
Percent Profitable: 31%

Gross Profit: $145.28
Gross Loss: $533.12
Commissions/Fees: $47.84
Net Profit: $387.84

Max Drawdown: $387.84
Average Winner: $36.32
Average Loser: $59.24

No trades today. I hope everyone has a great weekend and profitable trading next week. I will be heading out on a quick trip to Wyoming early Monday morning and hope to be back Thursday but most likely Friday. So no trading or journal entries next week.

It's good to be back. I slept in this morning and got a late start. After doing my prep I saw an opportunity for a quick scalp of +5 ticks with 4 contracts. It worked out fine. However, I missed the second opportunity for +10 ticks while marking up my 1st trade on the chart and I just missed my third opportunity for +10 ticks while doing this entry. I am fine with missing both trades it is just nice to see the price action going as expected.

I had my order to go short at 81.91 for +10 ticks. Price stopped at 81.89 and retraced so I didn't get filled. Right idea as it pulled back to 81.63. Oh well!

I knew price would reach PLOD but I tried for one more bounce at 82.04. In addition, to make things worse I widened my stop not expecting price to break 82.10 that quickly. However, I was stopped out at 82.16. Then on tilt I made a bad entry at 82.16 and once I saw that I had blown it, I moved my targets to +2 ticks where I was filled. Right now I am sitting at $200.00. My next planned entry was at 81.80 for +10 ticks and again it missed filling by 2 ticks. I didn't have the confidence to take the trade at 81.72 for +10 ticks but it would have filled and worked out. Never, ever widen stops - I know better!

I am not quite sure which direction price will ultimately go at this point so I took a quick scalp of +6 ticks with 4 contracts at 82.07.

This one for only +5 ticks with 4 contracts. I am going to sim until it breaks out of this range of 82.31 to 81.71.

Well, I am pleased to be positive on my first day back. However, had I not moved my stop out on my big losing trade I would be plus another $300 dollars. That's what I get for NOT following my rules!

Overslept again today. Result was that I missed some great setups. 3 great trades in the area of 83.14 to 83.27 area just after open. I barely missed the last trade and took a late entry. When I saw that it was done moving I closed the 4 contracts at +2 ticks.

Trade worked perfectly! However, I placed the entry order on a different chart and that chart had the account set for "Sim" instead of "Combine". Total bummer! $505.28 went to Sim and NOT Combine.

Had to leave for awhile. Came back and took this. Only took +4 ticks with 4 contracts because of uncertainty of follow through being so close to 82.00.

Took this scalp for +5 ticks with 4 contracts as price initially broke yesterday's congestion range between 81.71 and 82.31.

Seems like there is always one thing that keeps me from having a really good day. Anyhow, I am still pleased. I was interrupted again and have to quit early today to take my daughter to the orthodontist so any more trades I am able to place will be "Sim". Here are my trade results for today:

It's good to be back trading again both in a Combine and in my live account. It's time to press on and become a funded trader, forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead.

I will be posting my trades and daily results for the Combine starting next week. For now, I will just post my Trade Report for the first two days completed.

Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

I opened NinjaTrader this evening to conduct prep for tomorrow and came by later and saw this opportunity for a quick scalp. Trade was a long with 3 contracts for +11 ticks each less commissions. A nice way to start the week.

Got up and NOT alert. Quick glance at the charts as going to the restroom and I blew it. First, I had to tight of stop on the short right at my trigger zone & then price proceeded to do what I expected. Then it looked like CL was going to resume its upward move and I tried a long. Needless, to say I was stopped again. Now that I am semi-awake I am to saying myself, "How stupid on my part." Overall, 2 bad trades with entries and management. I am going back to sleep and get some rest. Then when alert and prepared in the morning I will resume trading. Gave back my profits from earlier and down a little over a hundred with commissions.

Completed one more long with 3 contracts @ +11 ticks each for another $330. I should be at about $525 for the day so I reached my daily goal for the Combine so now will trade live. I will post the Combine statistics tonight.

Sick and NOT sharp mentally therefore I choose NOT to trade the Combine today. Hoping to be back trading tomorrow.

Well, I never should have traded today. I am still sick, in a mental fog and definitely was NOT reading the market correctly but for some reason I went ahead anyway. Very quickly I was down over a $1,200! I did manage to fight my way back to about plus $7 after commissions and then I stopped trading for the day. However, the damage was done. My losers for each product were greater than my winners and I ignored my personal daily loss limit. It may have worked out this time but that is not the way of a professional trader. I need to work on this!

Also, for some reason I chose today to start trading the ES. I reached my daily goal in CL but had a losing day in the ES. Now, I do not have a trading average greater than zero for each product traded. I had way too many trades to document them all so I am just going to show my trade results for each product. Here you go:

Well, I woke up and saw a great setup so I entered but it was taking too long to follow through so I moved stop to +1 tick and got stopped out which at the moment looks like a real good decision. I will watch for a reentry before going back to bed.

Two more quick trades and both were on CL. The first was stopped out with 3 contracts at -9 ticks each. The second was 3 contracts at +12 ticks each. I now have met my daily goal for the Combine and am going to switch over to my live account.

Stopped out for about a $300 loss on a counter-trend trade. It was at a good location on my long term chart. However, I was a little early and shortened up my stop because of the counter-trend. Had I been here at my computer a few minutes earlier I would have had the ideal location and setup. I guess the lesson is I should have passed on the trade and waited.

Taking the trade again but because of the loss I reduced my target just to get back close to scratch. I am about $12 to the negative now.

It seems like I haven't been able to do anything right. Misreading both the CL and ES markets again. Not trusting my setups. Three times I moved my stop because it was taking to long for the trade to develop. In doing so, I took losses only to watch the market move as I anticipated. Also, because of fear I cut my profits small. Only to watch price go on and hit my targets. Over trading again! Huge commissions!

The only thing positive about today is that I kept my total losses under my daily goal and nowhere near my daily loss limit. I will post my trade report later today as ugly as it is.

I intend to get some good rest and do some market replay over the weekend to help get ready for next week.

Have a great weekend all!

No business taking this trade. I shouldn't even be looking for a long trade until I see at least a major trend line break, then in this case a higher high, and a pullback to my go zone. I was impatient and trying to catch what I thought might be a quick ride up to my "Go Zone". I based the entry on the 2 wicks of the 2 up bars which I see alot of times for a retracement move. This was NOT one of my setups it was just impatience. When I saw the 2 sharp closing bars down I then took some immediate profit when given the opportunity. 4 contracts at +3 ticks. Quick $100 but I was just lucky.

Here is an example of what I was talking about in the last post. Notice the trend line break, the higher high, and the pullback to my go zone.

Based on the previous setup plus my trend bias changing to long with the close above my solid black line I took a quick scalp on the ES. 4 contracts for 1 point each. I will look to reenter trade as I get price confirmation. I am NOT fully sure about this trade yet because of price hitting my dotted reversal line (major resistance) and not closing above it. We will see how the price action goes.

My wife called from work. While we were talking price action NOT only did not confirm a long setup on the ES but I missed the perfect entry for a short as the downtrend continued. Bummed - I would have been done trading the Combine for the day and could have gone to my live account.

Took a quick scalp on ES with triple divergence. 2 contracts stopped out at 2 points. Turned around and did the trade again with 2 contracts for 2 points. Basically down commissions.

The higher low has been established. Put entry in place and it missed filling by 1 tick. First target would have been 46.78. (+25) Second target at 47.06 (+49). That is trading!

Price after moving all the way to 46.74 did retreat to my entry point but I didn't take it. I prefer 1st test. Downtrend may resume have to watch and see.

Sideways congestion on CL. Not sure if I will make any more trades today. May just take the money and run. I have reached my initial Combine goal for the day. However, I need to recalculate to see what I now need after the other day's loss.

It should be a nice breakout move on CL which ever direction it goes. Look for about 50 ticks either way based on the congestion zone. And all I need is a little piece of that. Either a target of 47.20 if it breaks up or 45.67 if it breaks down.

I did reach my new daily goal for the Combine of $450. Net profit was $462 between the CL and ES contracts.

Here are the results for CL:

I tried a new scalping method early this morning and got killed. I won't bother showing you those trades because they were useless (at least I was). It has taken me awhile but I have managed to dig myself out of a deep hole. I am now about $20 to the positive after commissions. We will see what the market does from here.

I should have stopped after digging myself out of that big hole but pride can lead to destruction. Here are my final results for today:

Crude (CL)

S&P500 (ES)

Here is a snapshot of my last trade for the day. It was a picture perfect setup and I blew it. I didn't expect the last move up before the fall to be as strong as it was and I got stopped out to the tick. This happened to me twice today (where I got stopped out to the tick). However, had I not been trying to squeeze in a few extra dollars after a super difficult day and waited for my setup entry it never would have been a problem.

Not a great way to start after the holiday. I definitely wasn't thinking. I missed 2 perfect setups that would have yielded me over $1500 with 4 contracts. Tried taking a 2nd test of my area instead of waiting for a HH above 47.76 and got stopped out now I am down over $500. In addition, I missed my SHORT entry at 47.43 It is going to be a fight today!

I missed the first one as I woke my son up. Grabbed the 2nd one. One contract for +16, second contract stopped out @ +2.

Expecting price to go to 47.17. Entered at 46.81 with 2 contracts. Initial stop: -17 ticks. T1: +16 / T2: +26. We will see what happens. Not looking good at the moment but I will let it play out as this is one of my favorite setups.

Both targets filled and price did reach expected target of 47.17. Looking to reenter as I have another new high.

Entered on pullback @ 46.92 with 2 contracts. At this point I am just wanting to get a little cushion so I have both contracts set @ T1 for +16 ticks. Just filled.

That pesky futures.io (formerly BMT) bug has made your CL chart not post. Others so far are fine....

Unfortunately, I have to go to the doctor. Up about $475 I believe. Hoping that I will be back in time for the afternoon move. I want to be above $700 today.

Hope your trading is going well!

I missed the good setup so I was trying for a quick scalp. PHOD was holding with major divergence. Also had two lower highs in the congestion area and I was looking for price to pull back to the 2009 area. Turned out there was nothing quick about it (time of day). Setup was nice but NO follow through.

Price moved 7 ticks and stalled. I got tired of waiting and wanted to get some sleep so I moved stop to +5 and exited the trade.

See you all in the morning!

Glad I went to sleep - It just reached the 2009 area about 1/2 hour ago.

I wanted this one bad for 2 points because it would have put me back on all green for the Combine but I couldn't take the trade because of news. Bummer!

Strangely, this image is also not coming through, at least for me. Usually when this happens, it seems that the poster had the edit window open a long time with the image embedded in it before posting, so many of us (the long-winded ones ) have taken to finishing and proofreading our writing before adding the image at the last minute.

But your post is very short, so I don't imagine you had the window open a significant span of time, so this idea doesn't seem to apply....

Strange. Since futures.io (formerly BMT) will eventually go to a completely different bulletin board software, this issue is not likely to be fixed now. So we've just learned to live with it. But having it not work sometimes on your shorter posts is a new thing.

Anyway, FYI on that chart image.

Bob.

I should have gone for +16 ticks since I expected it to reach 47.60 but only took +8 with 3 contracts.

Sorry, took a foolish trade on ES when I wasn't sure if it was going to go up or down and of course it stopped me out and then went right up in the direction of my trade & hit my target of 3 points. (Loss 3 points w/3 contracts). Took a quick scalp on Crude with 3 contracts and regained my loss.

It usually does. Give it a try.

Bob.

PS, I can't see any of the CL images you put up today. The ES is fine. Don't know the difference, if any.

I have had the "disappearing graphic" syndrome on futures.io (formerly BMT) many many times. I often have the reply window open for 15-30 mins as I compose a long post. It is not uncommon for me to have 3-5 graphics in any one post.

I have NOT had a problem though for the last 4 months or so and here is why:

1. I create/annotate my charts and keep them in my graphics software (I use an old reliable version of Paintshop pro)

2. The I split my commuter screen so I can see the futures.io (formerly BMT) reply and the graphic at the same time.

3. I compose my message and in the space where I would normally insert the chart graphic, I mark that place with "=======> insert chart (name) here"

4. Then I compose the next section of the reply and mark where I want to insert the chart again using "=====> insert new chart here".

I like this system now because as I am composing my post I am looking at the graphic and sometimes I see more than I saw in that chart when it was first created .... so I can highlight those new areas of the chart appropriately and save the changes

5. Once the text of the reply is complete.... I upload the graphics I used as attachments. Now I over write the "=======> insert chart (name) here" markers by embedding the appropriate chart.... by this method the graphics are only in the reply edit for a few minutes before preview to make sure it looks fine/ save the reply.

Never had a disappearing chart since I adopted this approach

I've been doing essentially the same thing as @Underexposed, and it has worked for me as well. So far, the only thing that has been identified as a possible source of the problem has been leaving the edit window open for a long time with an image in it. It used to work OK, but something changed a few months ago. So now, my images go in at the last moment.

BTW, the reload of the CL chart in post #92 worked OK.

Bob.

Looks like you're doing well in Crude, though. Since these are very different markets, do you have a good idea why, so far, your trading seems to have matched Crude's personality better than ES's?

(And of course, maybe it's just how a few trades worked out, too, and may not have anything to do with individual markets' characters. Just something I thought of to ask.)

If in fact you have a comparative advantage in Crude, would you want to switch to Crude exclusively once you have ES back above zero?

Also, since you seem to be doing a custom Combine, can you say what your profit target is? Makes it easier to root for you, which I am, if I know how you're doing in terms of the goal.

Very good work. Keep it up.

Bob.
