I was in the middle of taking a screenshot and saving it for the missed trade during the news. It was a perfect setup. When I saw this. I had to do my entry by market order instead of limit order so I netted $587.00 vs. $600.00 that I wanted but that's ok.

In fact, as I am typing this I missed another good trade on ES but I am ok with that because I am actually thinking about stopping for the day on ES because it is nice to be positive here. I have been alright on Crude (CL) but the S&P 500 has had its way with me so far this Combine.

Here is the screenshot:

Looks like you're doing well in Crude, though. Since these are very different markets, do you have a good idea why, so far, your trading seems to have matched Crude's personality better than ES's?

(And of course, maybe it's just how a few trades worked out, too, and may not have anything to do with individual markets' characters. Just something I thought of to ask.)

If in fact you have a comparative advantage in Crude, would you want to switch to Crude exclusively once you have ES back above zero?

Also, since you seem to be doing a custom Combine, can you say what your profit target is? Makes it easier to root for you, which I am, if I know how you're doing in terms of the goal.

Very good work. Keep it up.

Bob.

Thank you! I prefer trading Crude but when I go live I want the ability to trade more than one market thus I am trading the ES also. When I am patient and get my setups T1 is 16 ticks and T2 is either 26 ticks or my fib target. My problem is waiting for the fib target so I usually take the 26 ticks. When I am scalping my targets are less than 16 ticks. Actually, my main setups will work on any market but I need to work on my discipline. I have a tendency to over trade and want to be in the action. The result is that I end up taking a lot of trades that I really shouldn't take. I am trying to work on this.

Well, I am very excited. No I haven't finished my Combine and qualified for a funded account yet but I am well on my way, Lord willing. Today, is the day that I finally got the ES into positive territory for the trading average. It was the only Combine Rule keeping me from qualifying up to this point. Now, I have 7 days left to finish strong. Here are my trades results for today:

I have decided to change things up a bit for the last 7 days. I am basically going to trade nothing but wave patterns for the remainder of the Combine. In doing so I am going to use a tick chart with nothing more than an exponential moving average on it. With this type of trade my stop will NOT exceed 10 ticks on any contract. If the trade setup requires more than a 10 tick stop I will pass it up and wait for another opportunity. I plan to trade 4 contracts and am looking for 2 successful trades to call it a day. My first target will be 16 ticks unless the chart tells me otherwise. T2 will be determined by either the chart or Fib levels. Here is a picture of what I am talking about:

When you say "wave patterns," are these Elliott waves? If so, I've never been able to make them work in real time, although in hindsight, like many things, they always do, or seem to. So if this is Elliott, I would be very excited to see it being done. If it's not Elliott, well, I'd be interested in seeing that, too.

Good luck , however you do it. And, good work on getting back in the green in ES.

Bob.

Bob,

I am NOT smart enough to do all that Elliot Wave stuff. This is a real simple setup that works good. Here is a picture showing 2 trades that occurred this morning near the open on CL.

No trades today - I stayed up way too late last night and was too sleepy this morning when I awoke. So I went back to sleep for awhile and decided to trade again on Monday. Have a great weekend all!

Bob,

I don't want you think that I would have stayed in on both those trades. The yellow dots on this picture portray where I would have taken profit. I am perfectly content leaving money on the table for others to enjoy. T1 in these 2 trades was +16 and T2 equals +26.

why would you Limit BOTH of your scales like that? I understand taking one off early, could you Elaborate on why you choose to take off the 2nd a Little later as well? Thanks

Bob,

This is what it would have looked like on my actual trading chart. I know it is easy to look back and do this but I am trying to depict how I hope I would have traded this had I been in front of the charts at the time. 4 actual opportunities. The last I wouldn't have taken unless I missed all the others and then only for 8 or 12 ticks NOT the +16 and second target. The third trade is the last one that I would have tried for both my targets of +16 and +26 and even there I may have exited all at +16 ticks. Hope all this helps!

Several reasons for me:
  • First, I have a hard time letting trades run because of losing so much money in the past
  • Second, I hate to give money back when I had some great profit
  • Third, I have learned NOT to be greedy
  • Fourth, its about making money NOT pride
  • Fifth, just one of these trades a day makes a good living
  • Sixth, it meets my Combine objectives
  • Seventh, I am out of the trade quickly
  • Eighth, it feels good

Hope that helps understand me a little better.

John

I don't know if last target would have been filled or not:

Crude (CL)

Update: It hit the target one more time and then proceeded to take my stop out at +5

Update: Now I would be in the trade Short (I will post picture)

Crude (CL)

Update: It just hit +26

If I were still trading this would be next entry.

Crude (CL)

If stopped out I would look for HH and then potential long entry again. I just moved stop to -2 as price went +9 and is paused.

If this bar closes up it is a perfect long setup but it closed down. Alright I'm +11. Stop moved to +3. Risk free.

Price came w/i 1 tick of stop. Now +11 again but which way will it go.

Just stopped out. Congestion. Bias still down But I don't like it when trades take this long to follow through. That is why I moved my stop to +3. I may have been ok if I kept it in the -2 area. Only time will tell if I made the right choice or not.

If stopped out looking for a new high above 51 then pullback to reenter Long

All in all it would have been a great afternoon.

Crude (CL)

Price just closed above EMA and looking to go up. A possible long in the near future but I would be done for the day. So I am signing off.

This is what I am looking to happen. It may NOT. You could have taken early entry but it is very risky. Stop would be -5.
I don't know how to draw so this what you got.

Crude (CL)

If had taken the high risk trade (but I wouldn't have because of time of day and no price break even above 45.51) then you would have been stopped out

These last few posts were to given to you all with the idea of seeing some of my thoughts as I am trading these waves. It is a great strategy for following short term trends but as you saw you can use it on any time frame.

I received half of my new indicator this weekend so I am excited to try it out. Being Sunday, I decided to do the trades in simulation mode vs. the Combine. Boy do I wish I could go back and change that decision. Oh well, the first trade had two targets +16 and +32 and both were reached. The second trade had all contracts at one target +16. Both were successful! Here is the picture:

Crude (CL)

For Some Reason I Cannot Get the Picture to Upload
I will try & Post it Later Sometime

Started with just 2 contracts because I got in late. T1: +16. Stop: -8. Risk to Reward Ratio: 1:2. A nice start to the week. $320 less commissions.

Well, this one didn't work so well. Was expecting a test of the PHOD. So put entry where I knew that I would be filled. Used my catastrophic stop of -13 with 2 contracts. To my misfortune price decided to set a new low by 1 tick. Stopped me out with room to spare as I had my stop just below the 88.2% retracement. Let's see what happens from here. Good news is I am still up for the day.

Nope. I am using the Median Renko bars and I like the slower ones. Testing between MR5 and MR6. What you are looking at is the MR6.

I placed my 3rd trade. Success another +16 ticks. Only problem, I was in sim. I am glad that I have kept my trade size to 2 contracts this morning instead of my normal four. My entries on the last two trades have been terrible. Neither was taken in my entry zones but rather I waited for price to come out for verification and I have been fooled twice now. Yes, same area (right in the chop), another attempt, thankfully a different result! Another +16 with 2 contracts (but in sim). I should have gone to sleep tonight. This congestion is killing me. Price has yet to follow through to any of of the 3 targets. Two to the upside and one to the downside.

Crude (CL)

P.S. I noticed that I dropped the HH in wrong place it should be up around the 45.19 area.

Took this beautiful setup on the ES. Stop: -10. Target: +20. Risk: 1/2. Trading 2 contracts. No regrets on this one if I get stopped out. Perfect Setup! Had my Trend Line Break, LL and pullback to Bolt Box 2.

Bummed at the moment. Tempted to increase stop but I won't. The trade has gone negative. Hoping that it doesn't pullback further for one last move up before falling.

Trade progressed +2 points in my favor then reversed and stopped me out. What started out as a great week last night I have really messed up. Let's see if I can at least get back in the positive today. You may be asking why I didn't take any profit at +2 points. The reason was I was only trading 2 contracts and had decided to let them both go the distance. Had I been trading 4 contracts I would have taken profit at +2 points with 2 contracts and moved my stop to -6 (1 1/2 points) for the remaining 2 contracts.

I reentered the trade higher at 2045.00 with a stop at 2047.25 (1 tick above the swing high) and just got stopped out again. It looks like this baby is going higher. I am going to step away from the computer for a little while to regroup and come back fresh.

I am expecting a possible reversal or at least some major resistance between 2052 and 2053.25

I am not trading smart today. Too greedy! Tried a quick scalp on ES for +10. That was mistake one. I should have gone for +8 since it was a counter-trend scalp. Mistake number 2 was when price hit +9 I didn't move my stop to +5, instead I moved it to -6 from -10. I am self-destructing today. Going for lunch and another break. I will try one more trade after lunch. If I lose there I am done for the day.

Boy oh boy was this pretty. They don't get much more perfect than this. Missed 2 great trades on Crude. Resistance and major divergence at the top, trend line break and measured moves. WOW! Just beautiful. I probably would have blown it but it is nice to look at. Let's see if I can get a nice setup.

I didn't have the guts to enter on the last 2 waves after all my mess ups today. I am hoping to have one more little scalp to try and minimize the damage today. Nice looking chart:

Its to close to the end of the day to put on one last trade. I would only have 10 minutes to get in and out (that was when I started typing this - I had to go answer the front door).

Overall, I am really disappointed in myself today. Not in sync with the market. Not recognizing really good setups that I love. Making some real dumb mistakes like not switching back to my Combine account from sim when I return to the computer. The end result of that one was a +16 tick trade with 2 contracts being recorded in my sim account and not my Combine. Things kind of went down hill from there. Almost forgot letting fear keep me from entering trades with good setups and poor stop management. I have a lot to work on!

So once again I will have to fight to get all my little green boxes back to be eligible for funding from the Combine. I am definitely going to have to focus (with a good night's rest) to recoup and meet the Combine objectives. The one good thing about today is that I believe I kept my losses right about $500 which is under my Personal Daily Loss Limit.

I will post my Combine Trade Report later.

From your posts over the course of the day it seems like you were looking at trading as if it was about taking trades and seeing if they work out or not rather than analyzing the market and evaluate whether they're opportunities at all or not.

Don't know if that's true but your posts seemed to me as if they had another... tone today.

Dunno if that helps or not.

ST

Appreciate it. When I have so little sleep and sick I don't function well, my rules go out the window and I don't follow my plan. My wife says, "You know better, what were you doing, why didn't you stop trading." She's right! (as always).

New session, new trade.

I wanted to be here at 5:00pm (CST) anticipating this move but was unable to be here. Missed the ideal entry but still not to bad. I have a super small stop with a great risk to reward ratio (1:4 for T1 and 1:7 for T2).

I entered this trade because it is in my target zone for potential reversal from today's move, the strong trend line was broken, price closed above the 3rd red bar back, then price pulled back to my Bolt Entry Zone. I also have the 3 peaks (valleys) that often signal an end to a move before a deep retracement.

I wasn't here when price entered my Bolt Entry Zone so I put an order at the top of the target area from today's move in case it pulled back and it did. I am in with a 4 tick stop, 16 ticks to T1 with 3 contracts and 1 contract at the fib target (+30 ticks).

What I expect to happen is for price to retest PHOD setting a new swing high, then pullback and continue upward towards the fib target. I do expect this move to take hours to complete because of time of day so I am going to just let it ride unless I get stopped out. There is still a good chance of being stopped out until the current price bar closes above 45.29. Price may want to return to retest the figure or move even lower.

Questionable. I have an early doctor's appointment tomorrow morning so I am NOT sure if I will do any trading tomorrow. Thinking if I do, it will probably be simulation only.

Have a great day everyone!

I passed up on several setups this morning. I was uncertain about things so I decided not to take the entries. Took one trade here late in the day with 5 contracts. Long (CL) at 44.19 with a 10 tick stop. I was going to go with 2 targets which would have worked out but decided to close all 5 contracts @ +10 ticks. $500 for the day less commissions. I will post the trade report later.

No trading today but eager for Monday. Going to do some market replay over the weekend. Excited as I get closer to the end of the Combine especially with so many traders going live this year. It's encouraging!

Also exciting, to me, are how many are posting about their Combines now. Used to be a rarity.

There's some mutual encouragement and support there, even though we are all doing different things.

Bob.

Took a simulation trade towards the end of the Super Bowl. Wishing it was a live trade now. Trade consisted of 5 contracts with a 7 tick stop and T1 of 11 ticks.

Had Internet connectivity issues twice this morning. Missed too many good setups to count. After 11:00am EST took BO retest short setup coming out of the Fib Entry Zones with a Double Top but unfortunately it didn't work out. 5 contracts @ -9 ticks each. I liked the setup just not the result!

Total bummer. Had a perfect short setup with a major trend line break and retracement into the Fib Entry Zones. Perfect entry and stop balance. Unfortunately, when price hit my target, didn't fill and quickly jumped up I moved my stop to prevent another loss and ended up with a small profit of +3 ticks per contract. Of course, priced went on to do what I expected it to do. I let fear govern my trade instead of confidence in the setup.

The bars are NTRenko which I believe are the same as a Median Renko bar. The colored bars are from a reversal bar indicator.

Early on I ended up way down from two trades that were good setups. Each moved in the anticipated direction, reversed, stopped me out and then proceeded to move back in the trade direction to reach my target. I believe I am to concerned with trying to qualify as a live trader and the result has been to make me overly cautious and fearful. I passed on many good setups today and then proceeded to micro scalp my way out of a deep hole. I did eventually end up positive. However, I definitely over traded and my commissions were huge. Another result of micro scalping was I lost sight of the big picture which really hurt, especially on a day like today where you can just let 1 contract run forever. I wasn't thinking! No pics today as there were just way too many trades. I will post the Combine trade results later.

Seems like these are being posted later the last couple of days. It still wasn't up by the time I went to bed last night. Anyhow, two days left and I have to get the ES back in compliance with the rules or I will miss qualifying for a funded account even if I do make the financial goal of plus $6,000. No matter what I have determined I won't be trading the ES in the funded account unless I spend a lot more hours in market replay trading it. At some point I also need to get back to trading Gold again. Here are my reports:

Crude (CL)

S&P 500 (ES)

Decided to sit back and just watch the ES Market today. Paper traded not even simulation. The end result after spending the trading day and many hours after looking at the charts was a decision to slow down my tick charts. Now, I have a longer term chart directly above my trading chart so it is always in my sight and my trading chart has also been slowed down. However, it is not so slow that I have to increase my stop size which is good.

I still have the two trading days left in the Combine to try and meet all the objectives. My plan is to try and trade my setups without thinking about the Combine. My daily profit goal for the next two days will be $800. I intend to focus primarily on the ES on the first trading day (whether that occurs tomorrow or not) in an attempt to bring my trading average on that instrument to the positive. Once that goal is obtained then I will put my primary focus on the Crude market as that is the market where I perform best.

Hope everyone had a great trading day today!

hi BoltTrader,

Am I correct your ES is -218 $ only?
My opinion: make 1-2 trades with 1 contract, if a winner let it run & forget the ES in the Combine.
You have great results on CL, focus only on that still can make your combine successfull. Like today many possible trades on oil.

I failed my last combine too, made more loss on ES than CL profit, split my focus and made me sick. Decided to trade CL only. Nowdays ES hard to trade, if you watch 2 instruments and 50% focus on each, will be far from enough to profit on emini.

Wish you many tick on CL, and an easy correct of ES!

Thank you! I have pretty much decided to quit on the ES I just have to get it back above positive. Going with 4 contracts for 8 ticks. One successful trade today with 4 contracts at +5. I am hoping that with just one more I can get my stats back to the positive on the ES. I just missed my 3rd setup a little bit ago which would have worked for me. (I will post that shortly).

Yes, you read that correctly I have the S&P 500 (ES) trading average greater than zero by $1 (lol). Thank you, Lord! Now, all that remains is one more good day on Crude and I should be evaluated for a funded account. Here are the Combine Trade Reports for today:

Decided to take the day off for several reasons. First, today was non-farm payroll day. Second, I needed a break away from the charts. Third, a bad night's rest and finally my mindset wasn't right. I will replay today's data over the weekend and see how I do. I'm looking forward to Monday.

Have a great weekend!

No trading today but eager for Monday. Going to do some market replay over the weekend. Excited as I get closer to the end of the Combine especially with so many traders going live this year. It's encouraging!

Following your log.
Keep us posted, I can't wait to hear your interview.

How many combines total have you done?
After rereading your log I am likely to stick to one product for my first combine.

1 loser with 5 contracts at -2 ticks. I was bummed by this one. The trade worked as expected however once price moves +8 in my favor I have my ATM set to go to -2 ticks to keep my losses small. Most times if it goes +8 it will make +10 before pulling back. 1 Winner for 55 ticks with 5 contracts. Need 1 more trade to qualify for a funded account.

Way too many to count! However, I am extremely motivated this time as it looks like my wife is going to lose her teaching job next year due to funding cuts. I want to be trading live and able to cover her income so she doesn't have to go back to work and can enjoy more time with our daughter's during her senior year in high school.

I didn't want to blow it. Entered short with 3 contracts for a quick scalp of +10 ticks. However, when price hit +8 ticks again it retreated. Price came within 1 tick of stopping me out. Fearing another loss and the pressure it would put on me to qualify I moved my target to +5 ticks for each contract. This may be ugly but it should qualify me for a funded account. When I return from lunch I will possibly look for 1 more decent trade setup to end on a good note. If I am gun shy then I will just pass the trade up and be done for the day.

When trading Crude (CL) you are not allowed to be in a trade when the Crude Oil Inventories release comes out on Wednesday's at 10:30am. Make sure you always check because some weeks it comes out on Thursdays instead. For your own good I would make sure that all positions are closed about 10 minutes before the release and wouldn't enter for at least 5 minutes after the release preferably 10 minutes.

Make sure that you note that the 1510 is central time NOT eastern and I would never be in a position past 1500. Hope that helps and good luck!

Here is my Combine trade report for today. I am pleased! Hoping that they will consider me for a funded account. They may ask me to go through Live Trader Preparation. I don't know. This is all new territory for me from this point on and I am looking forward to it.

I think they ask just about everyone to go through the live trader prep but the required goal is not as much. You'll be fine.

Congratulations on passing!

After your first combine and the following ones, did they help you dial in your trading.? How?

I don't want to make intrusive comments, but putting that kind of pressure on yourself and your trading is generally a recipe for failure. Not always, but it usually is. It is a lot harder to make money in the markets when you HAVE TO, must easier when you don't.
Just my 2 cents, speaking from experience. Peace out.

Took this sim trade with 5 contracts @ +10 ticks each this morning. I look for price to return to at least the 49.90 area. Anyhow, I am in and out.

A 2nd entry short occured however I passed up the entry because on my tick chart I had a green bar (doji) and it is to close to the open. Price did reach my T1 target but appears to be reversing now at open.

I just received an email from Scouting at TopStep Trader saying that the equity partner is prepared to provide me with a funded account pending my performance in Live Trader Preparation. They allowed me to choose the start date for the Live Trader Preparation. I selected next Tuesday, February 17th because of the holiday on Monday.

It makes us only stronger

I hope when its time I don't need to go through LTP.
I can trade 5 lot but I desided that position size is 1 lot
and I dont add to the position even if daily profits are above + 500

That are your LTP rules ?

ahaa

TST will put me through LTP because I have not scaled in COMBINE

By scaling plan I shoud use 5 lot today but my stop is apporx 20 ticks
One trade and I blow up daily loss limit.

there is no "should" in position size with tst.
there is only a "can" - and @TopstepTrader themselves said repeatedly that they like when people don't leverage up as big as possible.

And from what I can read elsewhere on futures.io (formerly BMT), Live trader prep is more or less mandatory, no matter how you traded your combine.

Just my 2c obviously

Missed early entries Long on the move up. Hesitated on entering Long. So I jumped in early on this 1st entry short. Easily good have taken +16 on this one. While doing everything for this journal entry I missed the 2nd entry short. No problems more setups will come.
