Evening all,

Joined a few weeks ago, would of started this sooner, but ended up doing some building work for my parents. This forum seems pretty friendly with some good discussion, so here we go.

Planning a few things, so this thread will be an amalgamation of lots of things, programming, systems trading, discretionary trading and general ramblings.

For now though (while I learn ninjascript, and finish off a few other things), going to be trading the ES, pretty much starting from scratch. Planning on attempting PulsarCap sim phase. Essentially that means averaging $120/day on a single contract for 5 weeks. Going to sim it while I get used to the platform, if I can average $200/day then I'll probably be happy to give it a go.

Will post some charts, trades, ideas & thoughts tomorrow.

Cheerio

Rough day. Had a bunch of things to do today, and didn't get any of them done. Didn't really have a overall plan for today, just winging it really.

Got cheesed this morning, had a short bias, but got chopped about, (3 losses, totaling 16 ticks). Ended up being short on the open move down, but didn't get out as I was busy, and took a 9 tick loss (was an emergency stop really, wasn't about to change on the move down). Got the long up, target 2 ticks below the recent high, and coincidentally hit the $200 mark. Should of been a reverse if I was about/on my game, but oh well.

On another note, turns out can trade multiple instruments for Pulsar (only 1 open at a time though). This combined with ES looking a bit rubbish off a morning, think I'll maybe look to trade 6E of a morning, and leave the ES to the afternoon.

I really like range/renko/tick bars, but I haven't got a good look at them yet. Also would like to try scalping a couple of ticks at a time, but have completely no clue about that. For now, going to look at 15m bars, for longs, low<previous low, close > previous low. See how that goes.

Really want to post a few things, but haven't had the time, sorry.

Trading a long position can (IMHO) be summed up as the following:

"Will I be able to exit at a higher price than currently before I can get long at a lower price than currently?"

(Ok, it becomes a paragraph if you include scaling etc, but that's not as elegant)

This is a bit different to what many ask themselves "Is the market going to go any higher?" The difference is slight, but important. That's all there is to it really, of course, it's not really possible to answer, but I think my trading has improved by viewing it from this perspective.

I've finished trading for the day, I have things to do. Will still watch the chart though.

3 trades today. Going to take a while to build up a sample size!

I started off by not sticking to rules and putting a trade on early in the day. MAE was only a tick, but the market wasn't really going anywhere, and as frustrated with breaking the rules, I got out for 2 ticks. I could of got the other 3 I had originally targeted (MFE was 4 ticks). Honestly though, I'm not sure I would of got out, because I was rather bullish.

I was distracted and missed Goods Orders, indeed I had completely forgotten about news releases (bit rusty, ha!). Hell, I had to double check it wasn't NFP! Jumped in @69.25. After retracing to 1367 from the low of 1366.25 I was in the situation I eluded to in the previous post. I thought the market was going to go up, and then make fresh lows, but I didn't think I'd be able to get in at a higher price, and just held. (Obviously price bounced off 1368.25 which would of been everyone's best bet).

I was then called away (we seem to have a theme), and so put my stop above the recent high, got stopped, got back in a tick lower and ran down to target.

2 days with good moves, where a reversal at target would of been nice. Probably still going to take a while to get the confidence to go against the trend in a new market.

2 Days in, 8 trades, nothing statistically significant, getting more comfortable though.

Long 1371.75 to 1372.25
$20.98
Short 1369.25 to 1368.5
$33.48
Short 1368.25 to 1365
$158.4

Total: $212.86

So, yesterday I mentioned the 15m bar setup. I can't completely remember which chart I was trading on (I switch around), but you can see from the chart posted today, the first and last trade followed the setup. The middle one was a news trade, and so doesn't really count.

Now my trades don't always follow this. I've never really written down a methodology as I have mechanical systems, but I will attempt to explain.

I guess you'd say I trade price action, but nobody's ever given me the exact definition of it.

Bars news trades, everything for me depends on highs and lows. If price turned at a certain level, that's where it's more likely to turn again. I'm not going to BS you with some theory, or claim I've done the maths, I haven't, it's just an observation from watching the market, maybe I'll get to maths later.

The most important* highs are daily highs and lows (today & yesterday). If the daily high breaks, I generally want to be bullish. This isn't because:

The market is likely to go up further.
I'm a trend trader.
I know this gives me an edge.

This is discretionary trading, I want to be bullish when we break new highs because it's easier on my mental state. When those 2*ATR days come along, if I haven't made a good profit it really gets to me. This is the simple way of (hopefully) avoiding it.

The same reason goes for putting stops above previous highs. It's easy. Now I know that everyone has their stops there, and that they may get hunted, and that that'll make me sad, but (you guessed it), this is discretionary trading. If I had the figures to back up that putting stops 2 ticks higher than highs instead of 1, than I'd probably have a complete system.

...I've had this tab open for hours, I'm not expressing this very well at all so I will continue at a later point, night all.

We've have a bit of movement pre market. Formed a pseudo head & shoulders. I've put some lines on the chart to show what I'm looking at. I don't normally have many lines drawn, in my experience they're not needed, either you can see it, or it's not there. Don't go chasing (waterfalls).

Fair bit of news today to decide the market. Bearish (for today) on this price action, but really news dependent. We'll see.

So I posted some pre market thoughts, bearish sentiment won out in the end (although I'll admit I got chopped a bit).

Ninjatrader crashed on me, when I finally got back, target had been hit but the order wasn't filled. I'm guessing this is because orders are stored on the machine as opposed to being sent? Could also be that I'm simming on zen fire. Nothing to worry about really, just didn't get to trade. Can't be sure I would of held, etc etc.

The screencap will explain what I mean if I haven't articulated it. So screw it, I'm saying I hit the target.

Long 1374.25 to 1373
-$66.52
Short 1373 to 1375.5
-$141.5
Long 1373 to 1375.75
-$79.02

Short 1374 to 1364
$495.98

Total: $208.94

Think I've gone 1 tick, 2 ticks, 4 ticks off the high/low of the day, getting exponentially worse! Sorry for the short write up, but a bit exasperated. Will maybe write more later.

P.S. Anybody got any questions?

EDIT: guess it helps if I post the screencap.
EDIT2: RAGE! Can't even get flat.

So ninjatrader continued to play up, I've just deleted everything and opened a new sim account, redownloaded and installed. Oh well, on the bright side I didn't have charts I'd spent hours on or anything.

Taken a short position (1365.5). It's pre market, but this was off an hourly chart (was looking at it for other reasons).

Rejection of previous low after breaking below it, simple stuff.

EDIT:

Put the target at 1359, you know why.

Stopped out to a tick, just re entered (was afk), as said, don't mind being stopped out by a tick as it's going to happen because of stop placements. No biggie.

What I missed was that the hourly candles are starting on half hours (which comes from being new to the contract). It's not that the candle wasn't closed, just that it hadn't been open very long, so the movement wasn't significant. Oh well, we live & learn (& admit our failings).

Ninja still keeps losing connection, sometimes for seconds, sometimes for hours, sad times.

Last night/this morning I tested a strategy based on an observation, it was not a large sample (it was 2 in the morning, cut me some slack), but it definitely warrants more testing. So I thought this would be an appropriate time to broach the subject.

Many people are under the impression that automated/systems (henceforth systems) trading doesn't/can't work. They're wrong. Now what is correct is that 99.99999999% of the retail systems which are sold don't work, and that the vast majority of systems posted for free on the net don't work, but that is true with traders as well. I also think that systems get bad mouthed by trading coaches, because it threatens their business model.

Where I think most people go wrong with systems is that they just don't go about it in a logical way. You can certainly tell that some people just chuck stuff onto the screen, it's amazing how many people use macd, but don't know what it is. Which leads us to another point, systems trading seems to be synonymous with indicators, aforementioned strategy uses no indicators.

I think there are two ways to go about it.

Firstly: Quantify your discretionary trading (if you're successful), into solid rules. You need to define what a trend is, what a high is, what a pin bar is, whatever it is, it needs a definition if you're going to automate it. So many people miss stuff out, it's like that making a pot of tea thing.

Secondly: LOOK at your chart, your T&S, your ladder, whatever, observe, note patterns, figure out how to make profits from these patterns.

A few more general notes.

1-Don't over complicate it. You don't need to, there are many simple things which work.
2-Pay particular attention to session open/close and news releases, the same things happens time and time again.
3-test test test test test test

These are more opinion based, open to debate, and related

4-I am rather convinced there is a inverse correlation between expectancy and frequency.
5-I view systems trading as a way to give me less work (in the extreme long run, ha), and to allow me to trade multiple markets and eliminate liquidity issues as a factor. It's not there to make much more money than I would with manual trading.
6-Not everyone who trades discretionary can make a profitable system, and visa versa, but I would think most who can do one can do the other if they take it seriously.

Still not got a connection, think I probably have a trade open still, who knows. Might not have results for today :-(

P.S. To show what warrants more testing to me, results were (in ticks):

Jan:
30,13,14,-2,24,25,56,30,-12
Feb:
-6,36,16,-11,-8,-12,-10,34,-7,46,13,43

Obviously MAE, MFE, risk, and many other factors need to be calculated, I don't want to give the impression that this is all the data you need!

I'm going to still try and trade of ninjatrader tomorrow, but will run another chart alongside just in case.

For today:

Short 1365.5 to 1366.75
-$66.52

Short 1365.25 to 1367
-$91.52

Total: -$158.04

So not hitting target anymore, but did miss half the day, oh well. Might post some analysis later, or possibly a system. Any preference?

Had a horrible day, testing going poorly, didn't get much sleep, people annoying me. Nearly ended up having a stop twice the size it should be (see pic).

I am thinking of moving to oil, I knew it was volatile, but had a look last night and it's 10 times more volatile. I find it hard to imagine hitting the $3k drawdown or missing the sharpe of 4 for Pulsar, so the extra volatility only makes it easier really (cetaris paribus). I'll have a look over the weekend. I think I may have a nap and try and write some more method stuff later.

I missed the bounce off the low before close yday, ad I wasn't even looking at screens (I thought it was a lot earlier than it was), so only had one setup, 2 trades. Maybe I should note that, I often get shaken out of trades only to get back in, it doesn't bother me, I'd rather take smaller more frequent losses than have wider stops which get hit less. I think that was a big lesson, learning that just because you've lost money on this idea, that doesn't mean everything about it is wrong (just your stop/timing etc, which are of course very important). Again, not articulating this well, apologies.

Short 1372.25 to 1373
-$41.52

Short 1372.5 to 1.367.5
$245.98

Total: $204.46

Again just scraped the $200, but wasn't enjoying today, no news, bit messy. Just scraping the $120, but not happy, pretty depressed, so not wanting it to influence trading too much.

So as stated, looking at crude, as over the 25 days, would have to get 2*daily ATR as opposed to 20.

Simple stuff leading me to think that crude will go back up to $114. Daily bull flag broken, top of which was a significant level. Hourly got a 4 touch trendline for buying opportunities.

The bull flag covered $11. Top of the bull flag was $103, $103+$11 = $114, 2012 high. Make sense?

Well it shouldn't! If you're doing a measured move like that, you need to take it from the bottom. So it'd be from 95-106. You could multiple it by a fib and fudge it, I don't do much so I'm not an expert, what you should take away is.

1-If you haven't learnt already, don't believe everything you read.
2-Random stuff on the chart can appear to work, doesn't mean it's a good idea.

So far so good. Having to go out, so just leaving oil position as it is, should be back for ISM, will try and think of something clever to write about.

Out at $107.25

If this was "normal" trading, probably be looking for $108.5, but it's open, and realistically, if I'm doing this Pulsar thing, I only need 6 days like this over 25. Will wait til ISM now. 40 ticks plenty though.

I don't think I'm going to get into anything else today, so might as well put down some more thoughts. I realised I didn't put a stop on the oil call (was $1 away), apologies.

So my stop and target on crude was 40 ticks today. I think a friend of mine thought this was excessive, maybe others do too, especially when I've been trading with 4 tick stops on the ES. As mentioned before though, crude is 10x more volatile (measure by ATR), so it seems pretty mundane to me.

Fixed tick/pip/$ stops and targets are just don't make sense to me. The vast majority of my targets and stops are based on highs/lows which are automatically adjusted to volatility, occasionally I'll use a multiple of ATR (all time new highs for example). Volatility also comes into affordability of contracts. It shouldn't just be the margin required, or the tick size.

I guess none of that is new to anyone beyond rookie years, but I guess it should be mentioned, try and post something more interesting later.

Long QM 106.25-107.25
$495.86

Total: $495.86

EDIT: I forgot to post the screencap, thought I'd put it on earlier. Note I was trading off the hourly chart from before, but that doesn't show much.

Buying crude 106.55, stop 106.3. Expect to make new highs, say 107.7, and return to test 107.25

Out @ B/E, probably should of exited off the break of a low on m15, but had to pop out so just moved stop there. Looking to sell a retest of 106.35 now I think.

...but for now, long 1353 on ES

Hindsight's a wonderful thing eh?

I missed the good trades today because I was out, but there were other good ones. I find it a good exercise to look at the chart at the end of the day and see what I could of traded, compared to what I did. I get a bye today because I was out .

So, 4th touches of trendlines, first one works, second one provides the one loss of the day, and obviously the breakout is another signal. A Bear flag is formed after the initial move down, and the further move down is another setup which worked out great.

Further on the way down, we have a small retracement to yesterday's low to the pip. I find on sharp moves, levels get very technical, and really like these setups, as it lets you get on the big moves without the large risk attached to selling breakouts with traditional methods.

We end with a few bounces on the low. Whether these would be successful is a lot more dependent on individual strategy/method, but most would of got +ev I think.

Of course my trades were in none of these places, but there's always tomorrow!

So as you can tell, got chopped around a bit this morning, stopped posting to focus, plus I had a bunch of washing to do.

In the end, saved by the gap closing, maybe it was the only good setup, but I think I generally lose the first trade of the day, or only have 1 trade in a day. Oh well, simple stuff, got a rejection of high of Friday (ok, a couple of pips off, but near enough for me).

Short

105 to 105.125
-$66.64

Short
105.075 to to 105.25
-$91.64

Long
105.25 to 105.25
-$4.14

Long

104.5 to 105.75
$620.86

Total: $458.44

Think I might be comfortable enough to do pulsar now.

It could just be that I've been busy though! Only took 2 trades, 1 setup.

I was looking to short 107.38, looking to cover at 106. In the end we never got there. There was a 5m trendline which I didn't trade, neither to bounce or break, would of been a better entry. I eventually got short at 2, got scared mid afternoon on a big spike out and jumped out at b/e (which I am loathed to do). I wasn't really paying too much attention I guess, got short 4 ticks further down and hit target of 105.95.

While I've had this open, I guess I could of got short when we hit this level again, but it did seem to have a bit too much momentum, and I was already done really.

Short 106.71-106.71
-$4.14

Short 106.61-105.95
$320.86

Total: $316.72

Well, it's NFP, so not doing anything til it comes out. 106.76-107 range on crude. Other markets equally interesting. Not looking forward to NFP for once, will probably only trade a little, things to do.

Pretty mild NFP.

I was looking to short 107.38 like yesterday, but again, didn't get there, I didn't managed to get short til 106.95, which ended up break even, whole time I wasn't really focussed, sad times.

Reversed my position, and while I was looking to 108.4 ish I've decided to pretty much always take profit at 40 ticks for the purpose of pulsar. Now I know this goes against running winners, but:

1-I am quite comfident I can hit the targets following this.
2-I feel losing a 40 ticks gain would really hurt me mentally, this I feel is far more the greater danger.

Now I could trail positions etc, but I think this is the better solution.

Short 106.95-106.95
-$4.14

Long 107-108
$495.86

Total:

$491.72

If this were pulsar, 2.6%, and sharpe of 51 if my calculations are correct.

Everyone is angry at me, especially myself. Missed an ES trade because I haven't been looking at it, lovely bounces off a line I drew Friday. Oil just been bumming around, not even got algo on eur to trigger. Anyway, shorted crude now, because we broke out of the lows and we haven't been doing anything, hopefully something will occur.

...completely ignoring the potential hourly trendline and the fact that I am generally bullish over a week+

Sold Tuesday's low, as it was obviously a level after the rejection yesterday. Stop at the next small level up, target at next big level down (yesterday's low). We ran up a bit higher to the confluence of the two trendlines on the m5 chart. Still holding for now.

Got distracted by the webinar recording. Apologies for more after the fact charts, still bogged down with problems.

Hourly trendline from prior days was still in play today. We never quite got to my sell order, so I entered after the rejection (close of m5 bar). Got out at the rejection on m5 (double bottom). It's Friday, I'm fed up, so that was all she wrote.

Feeling a bit better this morning, though not 100% yet.

Seems to be a bottom forming, so will short a break south, and get long on a move up. Again, we see the trendline rejected and then touched from the other side.

Oh, and I missed putting yday's trade figures up, but was just the one, so $495.86

Rejection of $106, wasn't up though (still struggling with sleep pattern from being ill, mainly better though). Put a sell limit at 105.71. Probably look for $105 and finish, it's Friday after all.

EDIT: Sell pullbacks to levels when you're bearish, buy pullbacks to levels when you're bullish. That's it really.

Already short, but m15 looks very bearish, this is the sort of setup I love (bearish engulfing at a top)

Grumble grumble...Bernanke...grumble grumble.

Pretty busy today, will try and do a good post later on. Already on third trade of the day :O

EDIT: on Bernanke (and speakers in general). I'm always surprised at the number of people that get caught up in what people are saying and forget about the other market participants. I was at a prop shop once, and everyone (long time, profitable traders) was always shocked when speakers would say positive things and the market would dive. It really doesn't matter much what is said, only the market makes of it.

Ok, bit of a rubbish day. Still recovering my sleep pattern.

Got short this morning at 106.47 off a pseudo trend line psuedo level. We came down a bit but I didn't get anything out of it, reversing my position 10c higher, as we have bounced off that trendline from the other side (pic 1 & 2). I held this and was pretty happy.

Then Bernanke was about to speak, so I got flat, for 2c profit, and as usual, we shot up. Nothing wrong with that, it's the right play IMO, but still annoying. Got long again 35c higher (zzzz), and exited just now because it's late, 13c gain.

Pretty disappointing result for trade ideas, but I don't think I did anything really wrong, just one of those days. Bucket shop is giving me a 5c spread so I guess results are a bit better, but been keeping it as a buffer, slippage et all.

Got up late, finish up early, nothing much done, bit depressed tbh, so not in the right frame of mind to trade.

2 trades, both based on pseudo 5min trendlines. I went long off a line from the steep up trend. Should of waited for a new high I guess, didn't work out, -8c. Got short as we'd rejected new highs, and were forming a 5min trendline from NFP. Target was 106.85, being a trendline. Probably go down to 106.65, but want an easy life.

Not a good day.

Traded the breakout, that was fine.
Reversed on an engulfing rejection etc etc, that was fine.
Completely ignored the line I'd drawn...that was not fine.

Luckily, I managed to take note of the next touch of the line, got in, and got out at a decent level. Huzzah!

It's far too hot to be out cycling today, nevertheless, been away somewhat. Just the one trade today.

104.6 & 105.7 were the closest levels of interest this morning. I had an order to buy at 104.58, but didn't get there quite, perhaps a mistake, but really in the long run, I doubt it makes much difference whether you pick the level, just about it, or just below it. Never bounced off the trendline, so didn't take, but might of.

We came back up to it (although was expecting it a lot earlier), and I was a bit unnerved, so got in at the break of the 5 min swing. Put the usual dollar target on and stop at 105.55 and went out. Could of got double, but as explained previously, not required for Pulsar.

5 min shows daily look, and hourly to show why the levels are important. HOLY HELL I'VE REMEMBER TO ATTACH THEM TODAY!

EDIT: haha, I remembered the attachments but didn't post the trades.

It's Friday, it's the end of the month, it's apparently the last day of lovely weather where I live, so screw trading.

This morning I saw a rising trendline, and a level at 103.58 (ish), being pretty much a section of the 103.75 resistance. Was wary of taking longs off the trendline as there didn't seem much room for it to go above, not that that's bad per say, but I didn't think the reward was worth the risk.

We broke the pseudo level above, and then shot straight down, I got short at 103.2, stop above the high, and we didn't really go anywhere in the end, some pseudo lines drawn, but nothing happy to trade without a nice setup (which I didn't see). Got out at 103.59 (I know these levels don't seem to be hit at the arrows, it's due to the spread).

Short 103.2-103.6
-$204.14

Total:

-$204.14

So, done the 25 days Pulsar would require, will post up some stuff on it in a bit.

Hit targets. Not sure going to do Pulsar though, got some personal stuff happening :-(

Will maybe post some more analysis, tbh though there isn't much data and I don't want to lead people into thinking there is.

P.S. That's the way Pulsar would calculate the Sharpe ratio (I think), not the usual way.

Congratulations on your journal!

In the spirit of our March Trading Journal contest, I am asking everyone to spend a few minutes and share their journaling experience.

A) What are the top five benefits you have seen as a result of regularly posting in this journal?

B) What are the top five problem areas you have identified as a result of regularly posting in this journal?

C) Were you initially reluctant to start this trading journal? If yes, why?

D) How do you feel, overall, about your journaling experience?

E) Would you recommend to others that they should also start a trading journal?

Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions. I appreciate your posts, and I hope you have benefited from your journal. I also know that others will benefit as well, just by reading about your own experiences.

Enjoy your weekend,

A) In no particular order:

Encourages the habit of record keeping, taking notes, etc.

Gives you insight from others on your trading.

Allows you to look over your trades and see what you were thinking when taking it. I for one often look at past trades and can't make any sense of out of my decisions!

Gets you into a routine, having a routine means doing the same thing every day, doing the same thing everyday will help you keep/develop your edge. Maybe I should explain. If you have a discretionary edge, you need to make sure you still do the same thing. If you don't have an edge, then you can simply change a bit of the method at a time, until you have one.

Writing things down will help you remember things, help you think in new ways, and will help with your literacy

Bonus: It makes Mike happy!!!

B) Again, not particular order

Lack of methodology

Lack of routine.

Lack of focus

Not checking the calendar

FiTd attitude.

C) ...nope.

D) Disappointed that I got ill and lots of other stuff came up, I think it started a lot better than it ended. Want to continue, want to do more stuff (see next post). Otherwise enjoyed it. Would of liked a bit more input, but I guess that;s down to me still.

E) Of course! I find it highly unlikely that you have no free time to do it, and if you don't, I doubt everything else your doing is more important. Even if you don't think you have anything to contribute, somebody somewhere will probably benefit. Most of all though, it will help you. At least give it a try. Putting it on a board like futures.io (formerly BMT), is good because it's open to scrutiny, and if you don't post, people will chase you up.

Placeholder to answer this tomorrow. I somehow managed to miss that I was qualified for this, go go amazon vouchers!

So finished my 25 days on Pulsar. Not going to attempt it yet, as too many non related issues.

The bright news is, there are a couple of exciting things happening.

1-Taking a system live tomorrow. Bit nervous tbh. I won't be posting the strategy, but I will post my feelings, and hopefully this will give an insight into it. I'll also post results and other tidbits.

2-Creating a new method. This may or may not be 100% mechanical, most likely I will post the exact details of it. This will lead on to the super happy fun time project (henceforth the SHFT project).

By the time these are sorted out I'll probably have sorted things and be attempting pulsar. Will also continue to post other stuff.

I haven't got very far learning ninjascript, I'm having far too much fun on interviewstreet.

Things ran smoothly today, scored another win. So just 5 shy of starting amount. Won't run it til Tuesday.

Certainly not going to be able to retire on this alone just yet. Maybe if I had a few more 0s

Will try and get some work done on a few things and post something up over the weekend.

Sorry for the lack of updates guys, I'm a bit busy, and trying to modify zigzag before I start posting thoughts. Essentially I want to simplify a chart down to P&F/renko sort of moves. That might not make sense, but once I get it posted it hopefully will.

Only 3% down now, ha

8 Trades, 50% win ratio (wins half size of losers). This compared to 80% win rate in backtesting. Think I'll pack it in.
