yeah - depends on the machine clock:
I got filling @ 10006 - and some seconds later it was 10003.
Did not really matter as the SL was activated also.

very choppy often around the important markers like 10000 here...
Many orders sitting above and underneath causing sometimes high volume
with erratic patterns.

Price is still south of daily Kumo.
This means above all still short.
The bulls drove price up. But the test for long will need once a daily closing in the Kumo
above the line of 10512. From there it is only short to get out north of the Kumo.
That could happen within the next 2 weeks.

Lets see.

..on thin technical equipment and charts right now:
I am sitting on a island in Indian Ocean - near Mike's .io islands
Far away from every larger landscape.
Just ocean around.
.io stands for Indian Ocean and means an archipelago
north east of the Seychelles - belonging to Britain.
Internet here does not always work fast.
Therefore a system that allows time programmed entry,
exit and stops is the best for the "shoestring traveler"

Trading from the beach is really something special though

Very deceptive today. I had a long entry around 80 but not took it as while a clear uptrend first move after the open was down. I know you are trading statistical rules, its just a market observation, not your system's )

Trade to live. Not live to trade.

No problem so far - I did not go for wider stops...
As said - around 10K price things are not easy to predict.
Can be seen often with lower volume to push price easily around:
taking all stops out +/- 50 points up or down the IB start price.
We are bear Kumo in more undecided area - which shows
some erratic moves.

Good Trades!

Today Friday and last day of month.

From Monday the new Dax Mini will be introduced with IB.
(it works already since yesterday)
It is the normal Dax future divided by 5. So only 5 EUR per point here.
And same data stream. Just the pricing (% per unit) is slightly higher.
Actual initial margin: 2541 EUR per contract.
Will be very interesting to see how volumes on the normal Dax future
develop and if some traders switch to the smaller brother.
It can even attract more traders on the Dax.

Even large one is relatively illiquid and slippage is sometimes severe. I get better execution on CFD believe it or not. All mini would do is to steal some volume from the large one and both will be more illiquid

@xelaar
very true concerning volume and risk with low volumes.
(my patterns only work when volume is there - so IB 30min <5k is a risky day).
I hope that the Dax Mini will attract more traders - thus volumes can rise...

As for CFD's I am not happy (on IB) with the trading times - especially starting
on official cash hour 09:00 while the future is already trading one hour. Even more
strange is that the after cash hours are traded...
The worst change IB made on CFD for Dax - that it is since half a year having a new
overnight (double) margin. Which is making it for me untradeble for swing trading.

Here the actual needs for margins of the first and the consecutive contract of Dax Mini with IB
for trading hours and overnight:

I get better execution on CFD believe it or not.

Would be glad if you're the lucky one
As posted earlier, I also use CFDs from time to time. In the past I duplicated trades of the FDAX vs. CFDs (GER30 and GERF30 as well).
Result: On average the original FDAX saved me about 48€ per round-trip per contract/25 CFDs.

xelaar View Post

Disagree, e.g. because of the effects that minis have in the US. Since the introduction of ES, YM, NQ etc. volume for the respective asset classes
has multiplied vs the time when only the full contracts were traded. And this comparison still holds if you consider the massive decline of trading
volume during the last year(s).

So I rather expect a decline on the CFD side which results in market adjustments and wider spreads. Both effects can already be seen since some
CFD dealers inform(ed) their customers about joining up their businesses with other CFD dealers and/or about widening their spreads.

Result: On average the original FDAX saved me about 48€ per round-trip per contract/25 CFDs.

One CFD provider is different from another one. I have 0.8 point spread 90% of the time and certainly during EU cash open hours bar few spikes, while FDAX has spread about 1.0 point and lately 1.5 point being the norm. Slippage is about 0.2-0.7 point, while FDAX about 0.5-1.0 bar violent conditions. Everything is rounding up to next tick. Problem with CFD is being executed by bid/ask, not by last trade price. So stops getting hit on momentary spread jump, for short term trading it is possible to use soft stop or just give a bit more and manually close. But definitely it is not a solution if you plan to trade over equivalent of 3-5 contracts of FDAX. But then you should not have position sizing problem in FDAX too, and this is a primary advantage of CFDs.

With regards to ES, I think it is a different situation because fat contracts were trading in pit and ES was an electronic 23h globex contract from the beginning. Conditions were quite different.

Trade to live. Not live to trade.

As for CFD's I am not happy (on IB) with the trading times - especially starting
on official cash hour 09:00 while the future is already trading one hour. Even more
strange is that the after cash hours are traded...

@GFIs1, this is also my biggest complaint with the IB DAX CFD because you can miss out on overnight momentum trades or gap situations since at 0900 the DAX is often pulling back.

Today officially started the Dax Mini on Eurex.
The first volumes look promising: around 1000 contracts per 30 minute since the opening.
Dax future itself had very good volumes too - so more trade volume in total is to note.

Hoping that things will continue like that and volumes will get higher.
As I can not see the CFD volumes one can only guess that a good bunch of CFD traders now
are on the Dax Mini.

Good stuff. I would love to see how my stuff would play out on mini too, but CQG/AMP still don't have it. Could you post a screen shot with say 30 sec bars around the 9 AM so we have a little bit before and after? Thanks.

Thanks. I will wait for a couple of months perhaps, but it makes sense to intraday swing trading to switch to mini dax already, because with larger stops and smaller position it should be fine, esp as one hardly would trade on premarket swings anyway

Hi @alexk1968

Thanks for your input.
In fact my trade was not stopped out today.
You are right - the high was 10998.1
But only 7 contracts above 10995.
I was not even aware of the fact.

So for this trade - it will count as stop loss
in this journal.

Good trades

No trade today:
high volatility on friday - >200 points.
Today a big gap down - and quickly recovering:
might be quite off the normal Monday trading.

But watching for a Walzer

Thanks Alex

for both comments - markets are not in sync as you say...

For today's trade I wrote of lower IB volume - which shows that some bigger players can push market down
and up to their benefit.

Even there are such moments in markets - one has to try, make the best out of the rules - and under
incertainty stay at the sidelines.
For sure more normalized charts will be seen.

To give some outlook - I am sure that the end year rally has started and we will have some very bullish
moves before end of year despite the political situation worldwide right now.

looks a bit shy bullish..
A important mark is 11200 which should be reached this afternoon to see higher prices before
end of year.
Price should end near that marker end of day.

today good IFO numbers calmed a bit the drop from the morning...
But the triangle forming right now does not really give good news
on FOMC this evening.
Could fix price resting under 11k - and after FOMC a sharp drop down.
Let's see

Today we had IFO and will have FOMC numbers

Wednesday special day before (trade until 16:30)
Thursday THANKSGIVING - no trade then but
Friday second to last day in month...
Monday LAST day of month

Stay tuned - very special situation here:
not much volume expected on Friday - but steady direction
and Monday some strong moves without much volume either.

For scared traders: stay at the sidelines until start of December!

Fantastic entry timing today!

Yes, nice entry but

the update of the forum was sent at 9:36 (6 mins after the 9:30 open 30min bar) and with the price at aprx. 11300...

small details, big difference sometimes...

That is true - I posted it later than taken :-)
On every LAST of month - I enter 9:30 in the opposite direction of first candle...
check it back. And as you know I only enter on full or half hour.
The reason why I was late posting was that I had a discussion right about that
in german forum...

Today is a classic @GFIs1 trade and also an important example of the value of a journal.

@xelaar has it right ...it's about documentation and trading your plan., not anybody else's signals or theories.

GFiS1 has
  • 1 trade per day => so either right or wrong ....once .... (never caught in the chop)
  • His plan allows for him to be wrong ....a lot
  • Sometimes he wins a little , sometimes. ..on those days where things run ....he wins a lot
  • He never loses a lot on any given day

If you read a bit about this game ....then you know that this is the guts of a trading plan .....

Nice work. .

Isnt it risky to hold a position through Data release ( ie ADP )? Or gambling that the figure comes out in your favour??

Col.

Data releases are always shaking markets. If you enter "near" that time - it may takeout all your stops.
Which is not recommended.
Normally I do not trade "over" US data - depending on the importance of the numbers.
But for today:
These US numbers are second category (for me) in the Dax and I do not consider them having much influence
at least on the direction.

This week was not only good with trades (finally) but the journal here has reached more than 180K pagehits.

Thanks for reading!

The frequency is still amazing - and that only in this journal.

Hey rat - thanks for your nice words.
Would love to see you on the upward sequence again - as in OLD TIMES :-)
Take your time and start over again next year.
For sure we will meet the same clavichords* (if you know what I mean).

Even more weird day today - good volume but likely even lower liquidity than yesterday - spread spikes all the time, little gaps all over the place. I had spoken with Baloo trader on Twitter y-day, he mentioned that cash index had like the lowest volume for the long time, while futures were good on volume. Same today, good volume in futures but likely very bad liquidity and probably very illiquid cash index too.

Trade to live. Not live to trade.
