As said: @GFIs1 's low-volume rules make sense: Normally no trades.

"surprised he has never had slippage even if volume is high"???????
Think you still didn't get what slippage is ...

I do know what slippage is precisely. As I often suffer from it in fast thin markets like DAX/DOW.

Very interesting situation in the Dax:

Yesterday price came back from above the daily Kumo to its Kumo top at end of session.
Volumes were quite high in the second half of the session.
Some indications that we see a island reversal in the daily.
In the hourly chart price is IN the Kumo.

What does it mean for today's trading day?
Opening could be in the daily Kumo - making a stronger down gap which maybe will
not be closed during the day.
As it is Wednesday and short is indicated - this could be a stronger down move again.

Trade will be taken if IB > 5K which seems after yesterdays trading quite possible.

Why make a trade today as yesterdays range was greater than 150 points? I thought u didnt trade the next day if the previous days range was 150 points or more as it was one of the rules??

On Wednesday 150p rule is not working - but on all other days.
Just for clarifying. I know the rule set is more complex as it looks on first sight.

Dax at opening starts again at upper Kumo.
The dive into Kumo of yesterday seems history.
Looks like we can see some good upmovement in a low volume day.
Can be quite steady - and surprising.
Not much noise expected.
Look at the 30min. volume also.

No trade today - yesterday range over 150 points.

Price still in daily Kumo - means erratic moves possible.

Good trades

Good morning,

as I looked back in your journal, I saw that your SL points were always 30 (sometimes 40), which is good.

But with with dax trading at 11250, this means 0,27% SL and with dax at 7000 (at the beginning of your journal), this was 0,44% SL (well more out of noise).

Since noise is a big issue with dax trading, do you think it would be a good idea to adjust the SL points to a fixed percentage of the contract value? (although putting SL to 50 pts (0,44%) is a bit heavy with contract value at 280.000 euros...)

Thanks,
Alex

Hi Alex

Thanks for your calculation - it is obvious that trading on price of 7000 means something
else than trading above 11000.
Noise will be of course per percentage be more on higher levels. In fact my pattern trading
here is "going the right way" - "or not!":
Main goal is to limit heavy losses. 30 points (sometimes 40) in this venture is a fine edge
to filter out little to medium noise.
Going to lift the SL means more risk.
In shaky times as we had in the last 9 months I think it is better to stay at the sidelines
than to risk more.
Thus I did not adjust my SL by percentage accordingly.

One other important point: the price may have changed a lot up but the volume NOT.
So there are the same players as in the previous lower price regions.
Means my system may be stressed more - but the losses should not be higher.

New month - new start

Dax price is sitting on the bottom of the daily Kumo.
Scenario still short - as Kumo form looks like a strong barrier.

On IB price is again south Kumo - means a good short day:

Dax short
entry 10:30 @ 11319
exit 13:00 @ 11349 (SL)
result -30 points

IB vol ok

Sure!
I will need to sum up the july week sums on both - this trade and the Walzer trade.
All that is missing in both threads.
As I am on a different machine right now - some 10k km away from my statistics files -
this takes some time to do it manually.
Stay tuned

Difficult start this morning

IB volume was too little to take a trade today.
This was confirmed with the second 30 min candle.
Price is nearing the top of the daily Kumo again @ 11434.
This can be a good support for today.

Good trades
GFIs1

EDIT: Turning point was 11430... and from there UP

I see your scenario too:
From Ichimoku there can be seen a level of around 9600 (not exact) to reach very soon.
At least lower than 10k.
I expect it before end of september - as bears at the moment dictate the price.

Good trandes

Today a small correction needed:
Dax long

exit 13:30 @ stopped out BE 10325

IB vol extreme high

edit: looked promising in the morning - and suddenly more erosion.
Not astonishing as soon around 9.8K will be seen in the Dax...

edit II: A walzer showed up too - conflicting with my rules in this thread...
The walzer did not give enough points too...
Thus conclusion:
on a day with 15K contracts in first 30min IB - it is tough to trade

Future of Dax killed 10K line tonight... much earlier than foreseen.

Just feel that on your tongue.

Now some really lower prices may be seen.

Be prepared!

I see your scenario too:
From Ichimoku there can be seen a level of around 9600 (not exact) to reach very soon.
At least lower than 10k.
I expect it before end of september - as bears at the moment dictate the price.

Good trandes

Yeah - have the same chart here :-)

In fact - the price overhopped the weekly Kumo over the weekend - without even diving in.
This is a bad sign.
Further tests of 8000 are possible in the months to come - in extremis.

Hi,

just a question: is your 30 pts SL hit on 10:34 (low 9806) hit or have you put a wider SL for today?

Thanks,
Alex

...with THIS scenario from over weekend: a larger SL needed - to avoid noise.
Price moves within seconds into 30 points here - driven by large order (just look at IB 15K in first 30 min)
My SL was set at 40 today.

The freefall of the markets were really written in the books last week...
So - as this is NOT part of this thread - to take a trade over weekend
after rules - I just could not resist... and made some fortune which
does not influence here

The BIG movements made me think over weekend.
To open a new thread about gaps - and big gaps.
How to take profit.
How to treat such monsters which are of course not often seen.

I will analyze the move(s) over weekend and start the new thread for
special occasions.

Stay tuned

People say, a trade with a 100 lot size wouldn´t effect the ES at all.
What would you consider as a comparable size in the FDAX, not having an effect on the market?
(in the sense of moving it)

During the last 14 days, including today, a 10 contract order will cause slippage of 1-1.5p.
The first two slots of market depth are regularly below 5 contracts.

hmmmm - EVERY trade influences the markets and thus indices..
but in fact orders in Dax of 20+ contracts up can make short term
movements that take out stops sitting near...
So plan to be out of noise (statistical matter) and let markets
play out.
Of course placing a 100 lot ES in volatile market is not the same
as when placed in calm waters :-)
So watch carefully the volume given at a time.
Decide "when" it is best to swim with the current.

Good trades

IB announced yesterday - to future traders - to NOT give a intraday margin...

Means - all margins are based on OVERNIGHT calculation.
Is for the Dax future >25K EUR right now PER contract!

The same is due also for all derivatives.

"Background" are the high volas and volume from Monday...

Can help to prevent some overly losses - but is most hindering making
some good points in special situation.

Moreover, this prevents many medium accounts with FDAX systems that need a meaningful
scaling in/out of several contracts from trading. So if one is convinced that his/her system also
works under the current volatility conditions, it's one of the - rare - special situations where it
can be better to use CFDs instead of the future even with a medium/high 5-figure or
(lower) 6-figure account.

At the moment, most CFD brokers still can keep their (F)DAX margins constant (make an educated guess, why ).

P.S.: The caveat about volatility is for a reason ... remember the CHF.

Hi GFIs1,

I also noticed the margin increase, by always looking everyday in the TWS system what the margin is. You say they announced it, but I can't find anything on there site or how they determine these margin increases. Did you get an email or something from IB, or are you subcribed to something for this sort announcements from IB?

thanks,

Evdl

IB shows all future margins here:
https://www.interactivebrokers.com/en/index.php?f=margin&p=fut

Today they announced new high levels for ONE contract: >31K
The good news is that from today per contract old half overnight prizes
for day margins are used....

BUT: >15K - which is NOT acceptable.

Guess, for the future we can count on such increases when circuit breakers are activated (in the US or elsewhere).
The so-called regular margins are calculated by the Eurex, based on a volatility system that is adjusted from time to time.

You can download the Eurex margin calculator at Eurex - Eurex MarginCalculators .
It's also interesting for those who never thought about differences between the Eurex margins and those of their brokers.
Comparing the numbers you get a pretty good impression if your broker spurs on risk, last but not least for small accounts.

A person who concluded that the very low-margin-for-day-trading brokers are simply out to fleece their smaller customers by enticing them in just might be right....

No names, of course.

Margins for 1 Dax future @ Dax price of 7K some months ago were intraday around 8K.
Yesterday margin for the same Dax future was >31K...
Even the markets have not moved that much.

Shows again that (some) brokers can shift intraday/overnight margins at their own wish...
AND push margins into the sky.
Has not really to do with actual pricing on THE actual market... just taking profit on volatility:
Means optimizing own cash flow!

A pity - be aware
(same is for derivatives - as IB is concerned)

This week was extraordinary concerning markets:
- highest volatilty
- highest volume
and for the traders:
- margins went to new highs (at least with some brokers) **

So this week had 3 trades
Two negative (-42 - 30 points)
One positive +40 points
weekly result - 32 points

Points since week 2: 390

GFIs1

** despite margins jumped up (with futures and derivatives) - the volumes in the markets spiked up extreme...

First move in the morning was promising - the trade bit in plus.

But looking at my statement in upper post: "IB vol very low"
made it...
The countermove was still with low volume topping entry.
That is risk of last day of month.

Thanks for asking...
Today is a very special day - we had already some high gaps and much volatilty in past days.
So my stop is 30 points - be it adequate or false.
Nothing to predict - trades in this situation are of course of higher risk.
For conservative view - stay at the sidelines the next 2 weeks.
Even my system has sometimes "bad" entry or exit times - over the year it has more
winners than losers.
Hope this helps

Yeah - @PeakGrowth the things are extreme:
Were intraday margins last year around 7K rising to 12K
now they were 16K intraday and the moment of high vola
as they skipped the intrady margin - it was 32K this week...

This has nothing to do with the market itself - it looks like
IB wants to get rid of "small" customers...
And use the moment for their strategy.

Or they might be encouraging people to not trade Eurex products, or it might be they are eliminating risk, like you say.

I think IB got scared after the Swiss Franc-disaster when the SNB removed the floor in EURCHF. IB has been increasing margin requirements ever since, both in their FX and their futures offerings.

But I don't think it's a deliberate strategy to get rid of their small customers. Why would they create CFD's where you can trade 1/25th of a DAX-contract if they want to dump their small customers?

BTW, the official DAX margin requirement is 24.455 EUR per contract at the moment.

So it looks like it's Eurex official margin requirement and not IB tying to blow their small fries out of the water?

Them German's must be concerned about something...

... no rate change so far (waiting for Yellen's comments though)

For the Dax it could mean a slight slope down south.

Looking for tomorrow's triple witch now.

Monday trade does not happen.
Because of high vola on Friday.
Looks like the battle for up or down is not finished.
IB volume in first 30 minutes was high ~10K.

In fact some lower prices will be seen soon.
A good trading day: Wednesday :-)

edit: sorry for wrong title

but a Walzer might be seen today - highly possible

Wednesday will be the last of the month. And of third quarter.
Important day for some companies - when having end of fiscal year (like Apple).

Tomorrow the moves will be made - while on Wednesday only some fine tuning will be seen.
My guess is to see a settle price for the Dax around 9350 for Wednesday closing.

Good trades

Yeah thanks @choke35

it is somewhat riduculous on IB margins: today I checked what happens with them:

Price of Dax is 94xx now.
Lower than previous days - but - IB margins went up to over 12K today for the 1st contract.
