Today a longer trade is foreseen. This is due to the happening of ECB on a Wednesday.
ECB decision 13:45 and press conference 14:30 (as @choke mentioned above).
On the decision some shaky move(s) are normal.

Having looked back at your journal and seeing your trades, the impression I get is that your indicators/charting skills are NOT the issue to your + points on the year. They key is to the same old adage-

1-DO NOT OVERTRADE
2- CUT LOSSES FAST.

Hi @CPRICE76

ECB is never gambling - some signs are often to see in the morning already.
But US numbers can shake up a lot - so right then it is best to stay at the sidelines.

Good trades!

As posted earlier, I certainly have a different risk preference on e.g. ECB days,
but after all 30p are a fair price for testing the market.

So it's less like gambling but more like poker:
Some are tighter, some are not.
You calculate the odds and make your bets accordingly.
The reward comes with the number of profitable bets, not with any individual bet.

well said:
There are ECB days when this special rule plays out well.
And there are others: like today
This is ALL part of the game.
Over the long haul it does not matter as the money managment was ok.

Next week is triple witch on Friday 13:00h!
Mentioning also the last days before HALF YEAR RESULTS..

so: (copy paste from last year):

As the coming week has triple witch on Friday
there normally are quite some movements
BEFORE that day.
This has to do with companies half year results.
On triple witch no trade - as the pricing in has
already been made in the days before.

So GFIs1 trades on Monday and Wednesday ONLY.

as it seems gives a normal short...
And we can test a Thursday trade - if there is a good Wednesday...
On Friday no trade as announced.
These shaky movements with high and low volumes during the day
should be more stable from end of month.
Trades from my side will then only be taken if IB is > 5K in the first 30 minutes.
As long as volume is lower then in low volume days the patterns will not work.
So expect some down days in July and starting August.

Hi @CPRICE76

There is a rule of thumb if in the morning the move is quickly in the right direction - but the market
all over is in indecesion - this can mean it comes violently back.
On normal days - some noise can occur - and a move makes not much sense.

On Tuesday I moved it because
a) I was not at the computer
b) it was a day in the week when I normally do NOT trade

Ah thanks, so you only move the stop to breakevens on days you do not usually trade? ie. tuesday/thursday? other than that you have a hard stop of minus 30 points??
Thanks

exactly - the stop is normally outside of the noise and there to protect from bigger loss.
A 30 point stop in the Dax has been seen as wide enough when trading several hours
during the day.

Today bigger volume expected.
Not so for tomorrow's triple witch day.
Might give some hefty movements on both sides.
This is not the normal Thursday - but a battle for some important level to reach.
My impression is to see lower prices...
Tomorrow NO GFIs1 trade.

Good trades - and not too much risk today

Looking at your trades- dont u think it would be better to have profit targets? IE if 100 points in prfoit then bank it? as many times you have been 100+ then u end up taking +18 etc.. at say 14.30 exit trade time. ( yes u will miss the +167 trades obviosly )

Thanks

Col.

I am trading this system over 4 years now - about which we can read in this thread a 3.5 years history now.
First as price was lower - the patterns occured and gave the best results. 100 points then was nearly impossible.
Now since beginnning with the rally of this year we had extreme situations. Of course a TP could help to cash in.
But some nice moves might occur too..
I have too little results for backtesting this. So the rules will not change right now.
Looking forward to coming months I am nearly sure that we will see lower Dax again and at these lower levels
the patterns will work again.
If this does not happen - I will collect enough data to get more points with the system.

But for all the moments when high volume and high vola occur - my Walzer gives nearly guaranteed points.
Taking both possibilities together, we can see again nice points coming.

Good weekend

does not happen today here:
Up-Gap and friday's range as well as a too high IB volume
does not allow a normal Monday trade.

BUT:
There is a Walzer

Good trades

The downward move in the morning was NOT technically driven , but fundamentally driven on the back of the Greece situation.

Nice trade anyhow!! About time we got the "big downmove wednesday morning " trade.

Looking at your trades- dont u think it would be better to have profit targets? IE if 100 points in prfoit then bank it? as many times you have been 100+ then u end up taking +18 etc.. at say 14.30 exit trade time. ( yes u will miss the +167 trades obviosly )

Thanks

Col.

A sample for your initial question about TPs.
Trades like this show why it is usually a mistake to set TPs
for systems that live and die by momentum.
Miss out on some of these trades or cut them and you cripple
the entire performance.

Not at all. There have been many occasion when 60-100 points were on the table. But as waited until the said exit time only say 10-30 were taken ( even ended in negative points ). It works both ways??

A a classical fallacy of using ex post knowledge for judging individual trade results ...

Following that line of thought consequently, you would take every 60-100, every 50, every 40,
... and finally every single point - just because it could disappear. Or you would "optimize"
TPs until they perfectly fit ... the past.

The "real" problems are different:
  • fear of losing (the stop or money that once was on the table)
  • impatience
  • ...
Only some out of many reasons why so many people finally end up scalping for ticks

Over the years you will find that people who follow systems like @GFIs1 are much more enduring
in the markets - although many parts of momentum (or trend) systems are somewhat counter-intuitive

I'm sorry, I need another clarification - yesterday was a high volatily day (over 150 points). How come you've entered into a "normal" trade today?

Thx for the question..
Yesterday the range was intraday 260 points
Between 150 and 250 points we have a high incertainty on the next day.
Above this zone a normal trade can be taken - with a slighly higher risk.
I am aware of this and took the trade. There is a well traded zone around
11500 - which could be reached before weekend.
We are nearing end of 2nd quarter of the year - where the numbers
of many companies have to look good!

Best of both worlds maybe:

Take profit of the 50% of the position at some points that suits you, and leave the rest running till the end...

I thought u never traded on a Tuesday?? ( if you traded on monday )

Confused

Maybe you misunderstood the importance of certain dates in calender:
If there is a LONG weekend - then the trades are moved accordingly
If there is a LAST of month - which might be most important for markets..
- then the trades are moved accordingly

So trading on wednesday makes NO sense - WHEN the LAST of month
fell on tuesday.

The same is with TRIPLE WITCH..

THE Importance of the rules concerning some SPECIAL events may
kill normal rules and bring THE POINTS...

So tomorrow - it will BE a FRIDAY trade - upon rules

Just a short question - why did you ignore the Walzer today? There were two strong green candles after 10.30 an you went short at 11.30 as per normal day trade plan. It is proving to be right, but I'm confused. Thanks!

That was a "crippled" Walzer:
The second green candle had >20k contracts in 30 minutes!!!

So - a normal pattern is NOT possible - instead after the "pulse in" -
with such pressure a pullback is quite normal.

But - you ask: "WHY I have NOT taken the Walzer?"
If my normal (WEDNESDAY) trade is to go short 11:30 - then a
Walzer is conflicting with my very stable rule for the day trade.

Read my wednesday trades back in this journal:
There are many rules with different timing - depending
on the given situation.

The wednesday rule plan is the most complicated - but it gives
the best points within a week.

I will bring the weekday statistics updated in one of my next posts.

may I add another question as to today's trade - how come you've entered today, given the 160 points movement yesterday. Isn't that a rule for the Walzer only?

Thanks!

SORRY!
I can not help you on this one!
As told - There Are Several Rules for a Wednesday.
There are never "changing" rules - as you can read -
just the appropriate one according to the actual moment:
ALL depending on circumstances.
Just READ what is written in THIS journal.

and if there are ANY doubts - just ask @ratfink - he
is our expert.

Good trades!

IT was a TRY! within a difficult area - where we find NO volume but a lot of volatility during the day.
I was putting a stop of 20 points - and it was nearly taken out too...
You are right - there is normally better to no trade in this...
But coming weeks will be weaker in volume and then some moves are not predictable any more.
This is why I announced in the post that it is higher risk

good journal and I am checking out what stop should I do for FDAX and 20 points is smart idea if you want to stay in the game longer to see if target hits. for me, any idea, i test for 4-6 months to get an average

I used to do FESX now which doesn't scare me as much as FDAX

good journal and I am checking out what stop should I do for FDAX and 20 points is smart idea if you want to stay in the game longer to see if target hits. for me, any idea, i test for 4-6 months to get an average

I used to do FESX now which doesn't scare me as much as FDAX

Hi @emini_Holy_Grail

To stay in the DAX-game (MY intraday trades with PATTERN) needs 30 points.
Everything else IS IN THE NOISE...

Just have a look back...
Good trades!

A small outlook to the coming weeks of July and August:
The first half year is through - a pause is in the stars.
Many traders are absent during summer months - so
volume will be lower than normal. (Greece turbulences
are going to sleep too).

My entries for a trade will only take place when the IB
volume is >5000 contracts. Meant for the first 30 mins.

So this is NOT a new rule (@CPRICE76) but one that
helps to survive in shallow waters of the summer months.

Watch for very low volumes and stay at the sidelines.
From mid August things might normalize...

..skipped

just political movements without normal background:

Volume is still good - but direction is pretty hard to predict.
Might well be a green day on a "normal" Wednesday Short.

Congratulations. That's really hard to do (capture an even number) because the cron job for those statistics only runs every 15 minutes or so.

IB vol extreme

Greece development before opening influenced much.
Some erratic moves highly possible.

Today IB < 5k

So just a mid-summer normality...

No trade:

DTB and Soffex closed due to a technical problem...

I don't trade when there are technical problems the whole day.
If I set automatic to execute trades - there is a high risk that they are not filled properly.
Waiting for Wednesday - if volume on IB is good enough.

For the Derivatives on the Dax which start 09:00 the same.

Looks like we see a bigger bug here:

2,5 hours NO futures trade on DTB, Soffex
1,5 hours NO derivatives

The Greek opened their banks today - and it works

But the German Precision seems to make Holidays

I think it just goes to show we cannot look at volume as a reason to trade or not trade, look at today for example relatively low volume but have a nearly 200 points??

As alot of stocks are now traded via algo's/computers there is not so much of the "Summer markets" when most Humans go on holiday as 90% is computer/ALGO based, and computers do not take Holidays!!??

Where there is no volume, there are no trades - no matter which method

Taking a look at today's price jumps you will find that they were simply caused by
empty slots in the order book, i.e. a lack of liquidity/market depth.

@CPRICE76

A sample for your initial question about TPs.
Trades like this show why it is usually a mistake to set TPs
for systems that live and die by momentum.
Miss out on some of these trades or cut them and you cripple
the entire performance.

Well why not have a limit order in anyhow- that may not even get hit? eg take profit if/when the trade is +140 points??

The problem is never getting in but getting out; besides, your crystal ball must be much better than mine
if you know that you will get 140p in advance.

With liquidity that dry you simply will not get out without slippage,
esp when you trade large enough to size positions (i.e. no single contract dabbling).

Just make a simple test: Take today's T&S and group the ticks by volume. You will find that most of the day
you would have experienced slippage even with ridiculously low sizes like 2 contracts.

Not at all.I dont know would get +140 but I mean is it not worth putting a limit order in for say +140 on the off chance that it will filled? otherwise just leave the exit time order in untill 13:30 CET etc..? ( IF +140 points profit order is hit then great, but if not simply get out at the exit time)

Opinions??

I for one simply don't like throwing 2-5p (news with even higher values aside) per contract per trade out of the window -
no matter what the target is. So if possible, I change to more liquid instruments or stop trading for that day.
Btw: imo @GFIs1 's low-volume rules also make sense to me ...

Whats 2-5p?? ( points?? ) pS if anything at all if working a order to get filled as a profit target u will be given + slippage, which means the profit target of +140 ( if filled/hit ) could be filled at +145??

Theoretically possible, but normally you will throw 2-5p per contract per trade away with slippage against you.
As said: Just test today's T&S for the FDAX. You will find many examples where even low contract sizes caused slippage
of several points.

So Howcome as far as I am awafe GFIS1 never has slippage issues? as when his stop is -30- He states his stop has been hit and its ALWAYS -30, NEVER -31, -33 etc.. surprised he has never had slippage even if volume is high.Strange.
