Hi guys,

As part of my research for the upcoming "Where to start as a trader (Part II: Trading Platforms)" webinar, I want to solicit input from members about the platforms they use.

If you could give me some information I would appreciate it.

1) How long have you been using TradeStation?
2) What are your favorite features of TradeStation?
3) What are some must-have deal breaker features in TradeStation that you could not do without?
4) Do you use TradeStation in simulation mode only, or do you place live trades with it?
5) Are you a discretionary trader or an algorithmic trader? How does TradeStation help you with this?
6) How easy/hard was it for you to learn to use TradeStation?
7) How do you rate TradeStation's customer service/support, assuming you have needed to use it?
8) Do you believe TradeStation is competitively priced?
9) How do you rate the community support that exists for TradeStation?

Even if someone before you has said something similar to how you feel, please reply anyway. I am gauging response by popularity so need to hear from multiple people even with similar feelings.

If you have any other thoughts to add please do so. Let's try to keep the thread on-topic, focusing on why you use the platform and leave all other discussion to other more appropriate threads.

Thank you,
Mike

1) How long have you been using TradeStation?

About 5 years

2) What are your favorite features of TradeStation?

No favorite in particular

3) What are some must-have deal breaker features in TradeStation that you could not do without?

Kase bars

4) Do you use TradeStation in simulation mode only, or do you place live trades with it?

Live only

5) Are you a discretionary trader or an algorithmic trader? How does TradeStation help you with this?

Discretionary.

6) How easy/hard was it for you to learn to use TradeStation?

Not real hard but like anything else it took some time to get a full understanding, though I should mention there are a number of features I don't use

7) How do you rate TradeStation's customer service/support, assuming you have needed to use it?

Support is good when they are there....they basically have bankers hours.

8) Do you believe TradeStation is competitively priced?

Pricing sucks, $99. platform fee unless you do 10 round trips a month PLUS data fees....a lot of the competition waives data fees.

9) How do you rate the community support that exists for TradeStation?

That part is good for sure.

Just a last note: Tradestation has a lot of features and indicators that come with it and from what I see it's considerably more than a lot of others....the only spot it's really lacking is a decent MP tool and the CDV is pretty sketchy, it has something to do with the way they stream their data (my understanding) that makes those type indicators not all that accurate. Everything else is fine.

1) How long have you been using TradeStation?

4 years

2) What are your favorite features of TradeStation?

Very customizable - I can take everything non-essential off and just focus on the charts.
EL - Makes for very fast coding of custom indicators/strategies/etc. so I can focus on what to do with it rather than how to code it

3) What are some must-have deal breaker features in TradeStation that you could not do without?

The matrix.

4) Do you use TradeStation in simulation mode only, or do you place live trades with it?

both.

5) Are you a discretionary trader or an algorithmic trader? How does TradeStation help you with this?

discretionary

6) How easy/hard was it for you to learn to use TradeStation?

Somewhat easy. I make use of macros for custom toolbars to keep the essential items close at hand. I had to watch some tutorials on how to use macros.

7) How do you rate TradeStation's customer service/support, assuming you have needed to use it?

I rate it as good. I once had a problem with the accounting department where they were in error. TradeStation apologized and gave me $200 in free trades to make up for it.

8) Do you believe TradeStation is competitively priced?

Yes

9) How do you rate the community support that exists for TradeStation?

Excellent

One feature that I'm finding I want more and more is to do a market replay with the ability to enter and exit trades (sim of course). Add to that a fast way to export these trades so I can analyze them using a third party tool.

1) How long have you been using TradeStation?
2 years

2) What are your favorite features of TradeStation?

Charting, Easy of development.

3) What are some must-have deal breaker features in TradeStation that you could not do without?
Automation of strategies and ability to write custom indicators.

4) Do you use TradeStation in simulation mode only, or do you place live trades with it?
Both.

5) Are you a discretionary trader or an algorithmic trader? How does TradeStation help you with this?
Both. I use TS for both discretionary trades and automated trades. Tradestation lets me build/test strategies for use as automated or discretionary entries. In addition, the new Portfolio Maestro platform is great.

6) How easy/hard was it for you to learn to use TradeStation?
It took a few days of poking and prodding with the software to really 'get' it but I eventually picked it up.

7) How do you rate TradeStation's customer service/support, assuming you have needed to use it?
Top Notch. I've contacted them a few times and have always been extremely happy with their responses.

8) Do you believe TradeStation is competitively priced?
I would love to be able to buy a 'license' to move away from the monthly fees, but their current structure isn't terribly bad.

9) How do you rate the community support that exists for TradeStation?
While the TS Community site isn't as active as it used to be, its still quite good. Its very easy to find Easylanguage help around the web as well as on other forums (like Big Mike's).

1) How long have you been using TradeStation?
4 months

2) What are your favorite features of TradeStation?
Portfolio Maestro - that's the only reason I signed up with TS (previously with eSignal for a couple of years), to have portfolio-level testing.

3) What are some must-have deal breaker features in TradeStation that you could not do without?
Portfolio level testing, and the easylanguage is pretty easy.

4) Do you use TradeStation in simulation mode only, or do you place live trades with it?
just backtesting for now.

5) Are you a discretionary trader or an algorithmic trader? How does TradeStation help you with this?
aglorithmic, when i start - just testing now. TS helps by having an easy programming language and Portfolio Maestro.

6) How easy/hard was it for you to learn to use TradeStation?
Easy. A few weeks of studying for easylanguage, even though i am not doing anything complicated.

7) How do you rate TradeStation's customer service/support, assuming you have needed to use it?
I signed up for a free 3-month period and they charged me wrongly, I am still waiting for a credit.. So not too impressed for now.
Portfolio Maestro is a new product with some bugs, and asking for them to be fixed either goes unanswered, or 'we'll see'. I am not complaining too much, because I expected that.

8) Do you believe TradeStation is competitively priced?
I feel it's a bit pricier than others, but I am ok.

9) How do you rate the community support that exists for TradeStation?
Pretty good, and busy.

1) How long have you been using TradeStation?

Since 2006.

2) What are your favorite features of TradeStation?

The easy of use, the charts, the EasyLanguage, have information regarding indexes, stocks, futures and currencies in the same price table and charts, lots and lots of indicators, excellent community, easyness of backtesting a strategy.

3) What are some must-have deal breaker features in TradeStation that you could not do without?

The easyness of all platform is amazing and everything it's very fast and quick to do. I have 5 workspaces in each desktop and I change from workspace to workspace in a blink of an eye.
Furthermore the Matrix, the RadarScreen and the Scanner.

4) Do you use TradeStation in simulation mode only, or do you place live trades with it?

Both although I don't full time trade (yet).

5) Are you a discretionary trader or an algorithmic trader? How does TradeStation help you with this?

I'm an discretionary trader but I based my entries and exits on trading systems I developed/adapted from others. In the future I may develop an algorithmic to do all the trades but there are some market conditions and variables that are hard to code them all. So I prefer to have my own decision based on each buy/sell signal from my trading systems.

6) How easy/hard was it for you to learn to use TradeStation?

It's very, very easy to learn to use TradeStation and also to program some basic indicators or strategies. I think TradeStation is the model platform most of other platforms base their developments and it's the best plaftorm every new trader should have. There are other more specific platforms for niches

7) How do you rate TradeStation's customer service/support, assuming you have needed to use it?

I don't use often but whenever I needed it was quick and effective.

8) Do you believe TradeStation is competitively priced?

It is indeed. I have the platform for free and I just have to pay for data feed which basically is $20/mo for futures and $5/mo for S&P index, NYSE, NASDAQ and AMEX Real-time data. If you want to know how can you have the same price package, just PM me.

9) How do you rate the community support that exists for TradeStation?

TradeStation forum has more than 600.000 posts. +90% of the times I have a question I don't need to post a new message I just have to search and I find the answer. Last time I had a question on EasyLanguage people from TS answered my question. So besides the user base community, we get people from TS on forum.

Thank you,

1) How long have you been using TradeStation?

since 2004

2) What are your favorite features of TradeStation?

ease of use, easylanguage, backtesting and automation

3) What are some must-have deal breaker features in TradeStation that you could not do without?

easylanguage, backtesting and automation

4) Do you use TradeStation in simulation mode only, or do you place live trades with it?

simulation for testing easylanguage coding and automation.... vs the old days of using real trades

live trading using discretionary inputs with automated trade management

5) Are you a discretionary trader or an algorithmic trader? How does TradeStation help you with this?

discretionary trader for entries and automated trader for trade management

6) How easy/hard was it for you to learn to use TradeStation?

easy if you have used other trading systems, but hard for someone who doesn't have programming experience

they really need to do a better job explaining how their object oriented programming system works. They still use the "try it mikey, you will like it" and OOEL is much more complicated than easylanguage.

7) How do you rate TradeStation's customer service/support, assuming you have needed to use it?

its ok but they have had their problems.... but probably not much different from other vendors

8) Do you believe TradeStation is competitively priced?

yes for trading software, trading fees and just recently changed to competitive for data feeds

9) How do you rate the community support that exists for TradeStation?

the community has matured over the past 10 years so not as good as it was, but most questions can be answered thru the community forums.

cheers

toucan

I noted my points above on why I was using Tradestation, but also see my brief comparison of TS and Multicharts, which now prompted me to move to Multicharts.

i took a trading course here in méxico df. the instructors use and recommend tradestation. also, and crucially important as well, as tradestation are brokers themselves they are also endorsed by the institute i attended as brokers. being a foreign national makes getting a trading account in the usa quite cumbersome, so the guidance i got from my instructors in setting up my trading account was very valuable in itself.

1) How long have you been using TradeStation?

about 3 months.

2) What are your favorite features of TradeStation?

very robust platform, does everything, very low cpu usage. order matrix is very nice, the scanner capability is outstanding.

3) What are some must-have deal breaker features in TradeStation that you could not do without?

i bought a very robust indicator, there are some nice programming developments out there. also, just this week i merged by hand two existing indicators to create an indicator of mine. easy language is very intuitive.

4) Do you use TradeStation in simulation mode only, or do you place live trades with it?

both.

5) Are you a discretionary trader or an algorithmic trader? How does TradeStation help you with this?

more discretionary i would think, but i do use indicators for everything.

6) How easy/hard was it for you to learn to use TradeStation?

it is very intuitive, and they have foolproof explanatory videos in their page and in youtube.

7) How do you rate TradeStation's customer service/support, assuming you have needed to use it?

it is ok. they always reply, although on occasion they might take their time, i have written to them a couple of times with platform and regulations questions.

8) Do you believe TradeStation is competitively priced?

6/10 - 10/10 of a cent per stock per trade, and if you trade more than 50,000 stocks a month the platform fee is waived. so yes.

9) How do you rate the community support that exists for TradeStation?

there is a forum, i'm not a member yet.

Big Mike View Post
Hi guys,

As part of my research for the upcoming "[BLA BLA BLA ="zttp://zzz.bigmiketrading.com/traders-hideout/14442-webinar-where-start-trader-6.html#post264208"]Where to start as a trader (Part II: Trading Platforms)[/BLA BLA BLA]" webinar, I want to solicit input from members about the platforms they use.

If you could give me some information I would appreciate it.

1) How long have you been using TradeStation?
since it was systemwriter in the 80's
2) What are your favorite features of TradeStation?
right mouse click button and menu
3) What are some must-have deal breaker features in TradeStation that you could not do without?
backtesting, good charting, fair data, the ability to quickly script an idea.
4) Do you use TradeStation in simulation mode only, or do you place live trades with it?
simulation mode only
5) Are you a discretionary trader or an algorithmic trader? How does TradeStation help you with this?
algo only, keeps me occupied like playing a game while my real platform tradevec does that actual trading.
6) How easy/hard was it for you to learn to use TradeStation?
not hard to learn we had the omega-list in the old days but hard to translate from other platforms into el.
7) How do you rate TradeStation's customer service/support, assuming you have needed to use it?
crap was then always will be crap your on your own
8) Do you believe TradeStation is competitively priced?
yes very much so
9) How do you rate the community support that exists for TradeStation?
was at one time the best but now it is pure crap worst than ts themselves
Even if someone before you has said something similar to how you feel, please reply anyway. I am gauging response by popularity so need to hear from multiple people even with similar feelings.
i use the platform because i have history with it, i have learned how to cope with the problems it has and have written many external .dll's for it. i also figured out i was on my own and decided to know more about the platform than omega themselves did. many of the features in ts was the results of many hours convincing cruz that he needed to listen to people who actually use the platform for it's intended purpose.
If you have any other thoughts to add please do so. Let's try to keep the thread on-topic, focusing on why you use the platform and leave all other discussion to other more appropriate threads.

Thank you,
Mike

i tried to respond to this thread as others have and twice met a concrete wall, lol. ~m

since i first answered i have made important developments, so an update is warranted.

2) What are your favorite features of TradeStation?

very robust platform, does everything, very low cpu usage. order matrix is very nice, the scanner capability is outstanding.

--- i have learned to use strategies now, the platform optimizing parameters is a thing of marvel and the back-testing is also great.

3) What are some must-have deal breaker features in TradeStation that you could not do without?

i bought a very robust indicator, there are some nice programming developments out there. also, just this week i merged by hand two existing indicators to create an indicator of mine. easy language is very intuitive.

--- also, tradestation can display data in range or kase bars, which are great for filtering noise out. indicators, show-mes and strategies in addition to these special bars are awesome.

5) Are you a discretionary trader or an algorithmic trader? How does TradeStation help you with this?

more discretionary i would think, but i do use indicators for everything.

--- i also have a fabulous automated strategy now.

3) What are some must-have deal breaker features in Trade Station that you could not do without? automation

4) Do you use Trade Station in simulation mode only, or do you place live trades with it? live trades

5) Are you a discretionary trader or an algorithmic trader? How does Trade Station help you with this? 100% algorithmic, but it was the first step in my system creation. Originally i wanted to start with pair trading, then i realize the difficulties to do so in TS automatically. But then i have found a lot of interesting features which use until now.

6) How easy/hard was it for you to learn to use Trade Station? Easy, i am not exactly programming gay, but this was pretty simple to create basic functionality. More advanced features comes with 9.1 version with objects, but in progress of time you can get familiar also with them.

1) How long have you been using TradeStation? Almost 2 years

2) What are your favorite features of TradeStation? Multiple workspaces under a single desktop & platform stability

3) What are some must-have deal breaker features in TradeStation that you could not do without? Stability of platform. Charting tools and customization.

4) Do you use TradeStation in simulation mode only, or do you place live trades with it? Both

5) Are you a discretionary trader or an algorithmic trader? How does TradeStation help you with this? Discretionary. No specific advantage gained.

6) How easy/hard was it for you to learn to use TradeStation? I learned all the basics I needed to use the platform in about a week, but spent a lot of time customizing the workspaces, charts, tool bars, etc. There are still features that I do not know about though. More features than I will ever use.

7) How do you rate TradeStation's customer service/support, assuming you have needed to use it? I have not experienced any bad service when it has been needed. When I had account problems, they were fixed immediately.

8) Do you believe TradeStation is competitively priced? As stated above, the platform fees are waived if you make 10 round turn Futures trades per month. I do think the data is expensive though.

9) How do you rate the community support that exists for TradeStation? Inside the TradeStation world, the community seems to be pretty active. The forums stay fairly active.

Hi guys...here goes

1) How long have you been using TradeStation? 3+ yrs
2) What are your favorite features of TradeStation? Like the reliable data connectivity...stability & amazing backup/restore capability. My indicator's i us everyday for most part are built for tradestation. Tradestaion is my main trading platform....though i do use tools/platforms other for additional trading/analysis.
3) What are some must-have deal breaker features in TradeStation that you could not do without? easy to use for discretionary. Reliable....now they also have sub-s data...not that i really need it. But many people had issues with them not supporting it. I have tested other data providers - free and paid top of the line ...TS seems good. The other kool thing...data is almost free....i dont think it costs me more than 25-30$...they had a bundle going on a while back. Adding features & any other International data is a breeze...ofcourse you pay for it
4) Do you use TradeStation in simulation mode only, or do you place live trades with it? Live....have used SIM seldom. One thing would be icing....if they had market replay.
5) Are you a discretionary trader or an algorithmic trader? How does TradeStation help you with this? Am a discretionary trader. But have heard it been very effectively used with concepts such as neural n/w's, data mining - Intelligent n/w's for automation.
6) How easy/hard was it for you to learn to use TradeStation? For discretionary trader it is easy. Doesnt take much sybol / workspace linking...etc.
7) How do you rate TradeStation's customer service/support, assuming you have needed to use it? Have used it...i was happy. Never a problem.
8) Do you believe TradeStation is competitively priced? Pricing was never a problem....i think they asked for 7 round trips....i never really cared....that is done in 2-3 days.
9)9) How do you rate the community support that exists for TradeStation? - I think its good. Some really smart and humble people. If i ever asked a question...there was immediate response. Never really inter-acted much....though have a divergence indicator I use to co-relate my own divergence indicator.

cheers
s

1) How long have you been using TradeStation? 11 Years - I now only have a TradeStation Forex account to avoid all the fees. I don't have live futures data, but the Forex and stock/ETF, and delayed futures which are truly handy!

2) What are your favorite features of TradeStation? Forex Trading, recoverability, stability, solid historical data, that pulls up very fast. Whenever I need 6 months of tick data, TradeStation is the goto platform.

3) What are some must-have deal breaker features in TradeStation that you could not do without? Radar Scanner, ease of trading forex, data is always ready to go and available. I also have to admit that the backtesting and walk forward features are really starting to get quite interesting. The next release could be a game changer in this area.

4) Do you use TradeStation in simulation mode only, or do you place live trades with it? Mostly live trades, however use simulation to test new EL code. It's sad to say that I sometimes use TradeStation to "kick the tires" on new code before converting to a MultiCharts PLA

5) Are you a discretionary trader or an algorithmic trader? How does TradeStation help you with this? Both discretionary and algorithmic. The matrix is very mature, and chart trader is very well implemented. If TradeStation would offer more options on bar types - namely renko bars, I would be more committed.

6) How easy/hard was it for you to learn to use TradeStation? I've more or less grown up with TradeStation, and have to say there were some challenges along the way. At this point TradeStation is very intuitive.

7) How do you rate TradeStation's customer service/support, assuming you have needed to use it? Has gotten worse over the years. There are still a few good people there. TradeStation World is a great resource.

8) Do you believe TradeStation is competitively priced? Not really. They've gotten better over the years, but this is their biggest area of improvement

9) How do you rate the community support that exists for TradeStation? This is one of the best areas of TradeStation - very brilliant people. However will also add that those who have the most to contribute have gotten somewhat pendantic, and sometimes condescending. I believe this must make it difficult for the newbie. It can be a somewhat intimidating environment - however there's always BigMikes!

1) How long have you been using TradeStation?

I have been using TradeStation for 13 years

2) What are your favorite features of TradeStation?

Rapid application development and testing of strategies. Very good for prototyping

3) What are some must-have deal breaker features in TradeStation that you could not do without?

Programming language interface

4) Do you use TradeStation in simulation mode only, or do you place live trades with it?

Live trading

5) Are you a discretionary trader or an algorithmic trader? How does TradeStation help you with this?

100% Algorithmic. TS makes it easy to use as a trading vehicle.

6) How easy/hard was it for you to learn to use TradeStation?

Very easy

7) How do you rate TradeStation's customer service/support, assuming you have needed to use it?

The few times I have called in they have been helpful. I think they have called me asking for help or asking questions more than I have them

8) Do you believe TradeStation is competitively priced?

I believe it is fairly priced for what you get.

9) How do you rate the community support that exists for TradeStation?

I used to be a huge part of the community support in TS, but life and work and agreements got in the way and I didn't have time to spend in the forums. I do not like the forums that exist now nearly as well as I did in the past so I very rarely visit or post

wallstreetluigi,

you might want to create a separate thread for your request to keep this thread on topic. The minute increments are fixed in TS, all you could do is use a higher increment or switch to second charts.

1) How long have you been using TradeStation?
19 years

2) What are your favorite features of TradeStation?
Ease of use, Easylanguage is easy to use for basic programming, extremely powerful, very customizable.

3) What are some must-have deal breaker features in TradeStation that you could not do without?
Easylanguage, semi automated and automated trading strategy development.

4) Do you use TradeStation in simulation mode only, or do you place live trades with it?
Live

5) Are you a discretionary trader or an algorithmic trader? How does TradeStation help you with this?
Both - I've developed my methodology and tools that I used to use for discretionary trading into a 90% automated system. Still enjoy discretionary swing trading.

6) How easy/hard was it for you to learn to use TradeStation?
Easylanguage is very intuitive - wasn't too difficult but took some long days and nights to become proficient. I still utilize programmers for the very complex involved automated strategies that use OOEL. My OOEL is very sparse and wanting!!

7) How do you rate TradeStation's customer service/support, assuming you have needed to use it?
Very infrequently needed, but when I have, I'd give them an 8/10.

8) Do you believe TradeStation is competitively priced?
As competitive as others. A few cents here or there is really irrelevant in the long run in trading unless one is trading a type of HFT, then Tradestation is a killer!

9) How do you rate the community support that exists for TradeStation?
Below average for very complex projects.

The main reason I still use TS is for back testing. I actually have another account I use with Cannon trading for actual trading but I know easy language and got used to it and don't want to learn another language so i am still using Trade Station. CHarts are amazing. Excellent back testing etc. However when it comes to speed, cost, day trading margins and service, the guys at Cannon are way superior....

1) How long have you been using TradeStation?
12 years in our shop, 2 years personally

2) What are your favorite features of TradeStation?
Charting is pretty powerful

3) What are some must-have deal breaker features in TradeStation that you could not do without?
Backtesting, custom functions/studies,/strategies, trade automation.

4) Do you use TradeStation in simulation mode only, or do you place live trades with it?
We do all of our strategy development, testing, and live trading with TradeStation

5) Are you a discretionary trader or an algorithmic trader? How does TradeStation help you with this?
Algorithmic trader, all the way.

6) How easy/hard was it for you to learn to use TradeStation?
Personally, I am still learning it. It is not totally intuitive and I learned most of what I needed from my partner. The training materials are sufficient to get started. The main thing that I struggle with is that I can see a data point on the screen, but I can't always get that data point from a function or elsewhere.

7) How do you rate TradeStation's customer service/support, assuming you have needed to use it?
I rate 5/10 stars. It takes a very long time to reach someone. You need to call them 45 minutes before you need to talk to someone. They are usually able to resolve the issue. The forums are not always available. Documentation on advanced topics is arcane.

8) Do you believe TradeStation is competitively priced?
No. They charge a $99 per user subscription fee just for the software, plus whatever data fees (subscription fee is waived with a minimum number o f monthly trades, which we usually achieve). We cannot run the software on more than one machine at a time (ex: 1 live and 1 sim), which means I have to develop with a Live data feed.

9) How do you rate the community support that exists for TradeStation?
Community support for TradeStation on futures.io is great, a 10/10. Seriously though, I cannot get into the community forums at TradeStation. And I don't want to spend 45 minutes waiting to speak to someone who may or may not be able to assist. My partner has had issues with the forums and can no longer acess them. So it is pretty bad: 0/10

The big missing question here is: Why do I use TradeStation?

Answer: Because I have to. We have been using TS since our early beginnings over a decade ago. As I have only just recently become active in our trading business, I use what we have. Since we are tied to our broker through TS, switching platforms would not be a whole lot of fun. I like Sierra Chart a lot, though I am still learning and am far from comfortable enough to switch.

When you look at https://trends.google.com/trends/
and put in for example "metatrader" and "tradestation" with the setting worldwide and from 2004
you will find out that this software is not as populare as it had been 10 years ago . Why?
Because it is overloaded, expensive and the platform is not open enough. I used it and I think you can put it in a museum!

Here the Link to the chart (without Indicators and Fibonacci )

Very interesting graphic. I agree wholeheartedly. At least we have enough trades so that we don't have to pay for the platform. Almost $1200 a year is a rip-off, especially since NinjaTrader is free.

Why ?..
I was introduced to it by Online Trading Academy . Not paying any fees, so, will keep it for now. I recently moved to NT. because so many software vendors are there instead.

That's really interesting. So Tradestation is basically popular in the US but in the rest of the world metatrader is more popular!

@vmodus it's true, Ninja is free, and i've found it to be a very solid and open platform, shame it's not on MacOS.

But free means advanced charting only, leaving only basic functionality, no DOM or Charttrader for trading execution. No OrderFlow etc. Lifetime license well priced thing though and in 4 installments even better!

I played around with NT a long time ago, back when it was relatively brand new and didn't have a ton of features. I liked it, but I was not actively trading at that time. We are looking for TS alternatives to migrate to in the future (no pun intended).

When will TS jump catch the 'free' trend like IB and TD? Robinhood really changing what standard is nowadays.

Hey, Mike -

I haven't been at this whole game for very long - less than a year overall - but until recently, I've used TS exclusively and explored it quite thoroughly (for one thing, I thought I'd be using it, or some slight variant of it, forever.) Learned the language, the quirks, the bugs, the ins-and-outs of their service, etc.

Additionally, I'm a fairly new member here as well, and have already received a heck of a lot of value from this place - so happy to contribute where I can, in return. Here we go:

1) How long have you been using TradeStation?

A bit less than a year - but see the above.

2) What are your favorite features of TradeStation?

Can't think of anything that really stands out. Reasonably workman-like program, with enough breadth of features and API to be useful, but no points of excellence or differentiation that i can think of. One of the hats I've worn pretty regularly is that of a professional programmer, and if someone brought this to me as their resume, I probably wouldn't hire them... the design and the UI are very 1990s, and there's little evidence of focus or understanding of user convenience. Sorta like buying a big drill from Harbor Freight: it'll be cheap, and it'll work for a good long time... but there will be lots of gear-grinding noises, it'll throw a bunch of sparks, overheat (but not fatally) if used really hard, and the grip will feel a little odd, like it was designed for someone with extra-extra-small hands and six fingers. Usable, but lacking in convenience and comfort.

3) What are some must-have deal breaker features in TradeStation that you could not do without?

....hmm. I'd have to say there aren't any - but that might not be true for everyone. Hard to say.

Their "order bar" can get stupidly complicated, but allows you to construct entry and exit strategies with all sorts of dependencies of every imaginable variety. If someone uses those, I don't think they'd find such a thing anywhere else (you'd have to write scripts to do it. Which would probably have been a better approach here, come to think of it.)

Their OptionStation pro is fairly decent - although, like many other option modelers, can't figure out P&L after rolling (the lying bastard cost me a few hundred bucks because of it) and can't do any useful calculations with calendars (granted, that's hard to do.)

But deal-breakers - can't think of any.

4) Do you use TradeStation in simulation mode only, or do you place live trades with it?

I've used both, live a lot more than sim. The sim mode has some really ugly bugs in it - $SPXW.X trades get totally screwed up almost instantly for some reason, and obvious successful trades in it (e.g., Iron Condors that land with spot between shorts) show negative P&L... or just disappear. Fills only at nat, never even a penny toward mid. Expired longs may disappear instantly, or persist for weeks (!). Etc.

Fortunately, none of the above happen live - but it definitely leaves a flavor of worry for a while.

More importantly, it hangs - live and sim both - relatively often; sometimes more than once a day. Ditto OptionStation Pro (a separate set of bugs which can nevertheless hang TS when it crashes.) Do yourself a HUGE favor and shut it down once a day. Seriously. Also, learn to kill off the TS background processes in the Task Manager, or you will not be able to restart it without rebooting.

This can really, REALLY suck when you've got a trade running.

5) Are you a discretionary trader or an algorithmic trader? How does TradeStation help you with this?

Still experimenting, so both. TS does have a built-in strategy back-tester and reporting facility; the first is more or less OK, the second sucks large rocks through a mile of garden hose (in fact, all of TS report generators are horrible - and trying to export their output ranges from a nightmare to impossible. And that's only if you're a programmer; normal humans have no chance at all.)

6) How easy/hard was it for you to learn to use TradeStation?

The basics, not too bad; they're pretty much the same as any other trading prog. Once you get into the fiddly details, however, you're in for some pain.

7) How do you rate TradeStation's customer service/support, assuming you have needed to use it?

Service - well, my rep is friendly, pleasant, and reasonably efficient. There were some minor problems that somehow all resolved in their favor... but that's not really here nor there. Not much to complain about.

Support, on the other hand... "Not just awful, but awful with raisins in it." Both the tech support desk (middlin' poor quality) and the trade desk (OMG freakin' horrible, consistently) have turned out to be unreachable about half the time; I've had hold times of up to 45 minutes for the latter, and finally hung up in frustration. They'll also straight-up lie to you when they have no clue; I've experienced it several times myself, and a friend got royally screwed by bad info on auto-exercise (she got assigned 100 lots of SPY despite being directly told it couldn't possibly happen.)

The guy who was mentoring me, and has been with TS for years, reports having to regularly threaten them with legal action to get them to do the right thing. The last one I recall was a market stop in a major index, during RTH and with no gaps, that "somehow" didn't get filled until it was several points past its value. "Must have been a bad WiFi connection on your end!" Uh-huh. Sure.

8) Do you believe TradeStation is competitively priced?

As a veteran on their "Salute" program, I'm pretty much commission-free (not on futures, but most other things.) But the numbers seem more or less OK. Of course, this recent "no commissions" thing is going to rattle everything a bit.

9) How do you rate the community support that exists for TradeStation?

Loosely connected, and way over-managed by TS. Some good people in it here and there - but many of them eventually get shut down or chased away by TS because they didn't dot some 'i' or cross some 't'. Not nearly as involved or effective as many of the support communities I've known (and I'm a long-time open-source guy; I *know* good, effective communities. Ran some.)

---

So that's it. Please feel free to ask if anything is unclear. Hope I'm not stepping on any toes, but this is the best, most balanced take on my experience with TS I can give.

Will the TD and IB 'free' trade products charging for data/software? I think IBs will be closer to RH - so nothing too fancy in terms of platform.

In the futures world it's the exchanges that charge for the data. So I doubt there will be any free data solutions. I believe IBs free trading is only allowed on TWS Lite and not the full TWS platform.

Tradestation is definitely not considered cheap and I think most people use Tradestation for the software. Hence free trading that doesn't allow use of the software probably has limited value to 'most' Tradestation users. But good to know anyway. Thank You.

It should be noted that all of this is EQUITIES and NOT futures. This is for two reasons.
1) Futures can only be cleared on exchange, and the exchange charges a fee for that. So zero commissions would involve the broker paying the exchange fee themselves.
2) Equities can be traded anywhere and don't have to be cleared by the exchange. Hence not only can you avoid any exchange fees but you can also sell the order flow to somebody like Citadel. How does that work? Imagine the NBO is 100/100.01 and you want to sell. Your broker will send your sell order to Citadel who will fill you at 100.0001. ie inside the NBO, and Citadel will pay your broker for sending them the order.

Apples to Oranges comparison.

MetaTrader is, most of the time, free and marketed more to the retail crowd.

As many have mentioned TradeStation's strong point is back testing but I believe what was not mentioned is it's excellent historical data to use when doing back testing.

TradeStation does have a "free" option with their webtrader.

As many have mentioned TradeStation's strong point is back testing but I believe what was not mentioned is it's excellent historical data to use when doing back testing.

I've actually been amazed at how inconsistent their data is. I'm not a big tradestation user and I have personally discovered 3 instances of bad data! When you report bad data, it quietly gets corrected behind the scenes which is probably why people have so many problems recreating some of their old backtests.

Disagree completely. 15+ years experience with them. Leave it at that.

@SunTrader - Are you using futures data? I've been with Tradestation over 15 years too, and I 100% agree with @SMCJB

Here are the e-mails I've sent to Data Integrity in just the past year for data mistakes, etc. - usually with continuous contracts they create. This year has been about average for mistakes/issues I've seen.

I'm not saying their data is better/worse than any other data vendor, but they do have mistakes in their data.

To their credit, they typically correct errors I sent them fairly quickly.

Yes futures and yes that is my experience as well.
They have mistakes, like all others that provide data, but they do correct them.

Also back testing is not as strong a requirement for me as platform/analysis/coding itself.

That's really interesting. So Tradestation is basically popular in the US but in the rest of the world metatrader is more popular!

Slightly old post so sorry to bring it back but honestly part of the problem is that Trade station is virtually unheard of in my country and I do think it is case for most countries outside maybe EU. There are multitude of reasons for this so I'll just note some,
1. Our regions are ruled by discount brokers, they have their own set of cheap tool, usually webstation of some kind and 100's of indicators. So you will not easily find someone willing to buy data and platform seperatly.
2. Generally Amibroker and Ninja trader (maybe sometimes spider and falcon) are considered to be the serious traders tool and that too only if you are using MP/OFA and program your own things, otherwise you will not find even seasoned traders on any dedicated platforms.
3. There is also rise of ppl providing their own platforms grown locally, who target specific users which are attracted by either some trading course, again discount brokerage house or some kind of grope or community somewhere where these ppl have been part for long period of times.

Basically, tradestation has kind of ignored rest of the world and rest of the world has also done the same to it.

They correct the easy ones! Here's one for you. Reported in Jan'18... followed up twice since... still broken...
Plot @ED=299XC+HMUZ on a daily chart!
@ED is probably the most liquid futures contract in the world, it averaged 2.3M contracts/day in September with a notional of $2.3B/day (S&P500/ES was 1.76M and $0.25B/day. This isn't an issue of illiquid contracts with no prices!

I have been looking for an American broker or someone in Europe that can sell me ETF. I failed to peace that I couldn't trade those. However, via IB, I can do options on ETF.

Yesterday a guy from Tradestation called and said I could trade ETF, and with very low commissions. Like 5 dollar max for a lot (or a basis fee 5 dollar, then 0.65 options contract, and futures (emini I think was discussed as this is the future I trade..1,50+ exchange fees. Also said platform and data were free.

I was kinda wondering if there was a scam. Now I can't find anything (except GO and Select accounts is for US resident only. But there are other account types for a non-professional retail trader?

(I asked lif he was sure and he said he was busy and didn't lie! When referring to IB and that they could not trade ETFs (and other brokers) He was saying he had no clue regarding other platforms and how they did things. >They were TradeStation!'

Can someone in the EU confirm or am I being set up?

I am here in the U.S. so I cannot confirm one way or the other but I would ask for linked webpage to confirm what they offer to EU accounts.

My two cents here...
I have used Tradestation since 2013 and have not experienced data issues as far as I can remember. Just recently, I started using Tradestation concurrently with Sierra Chart w/ CQG data and both are equally reliable.
My only gripe is that during fast moves Tradestation lags a bit. I mostly trade NQ and have noticed data lag and slippages during fast moves.

Thanks for the feedback. I use both (Sierra for analysis, TS for trading/automation), but one TS strategy I have is tuned to fast turns in the market. Not quite HFT millisecond speed, but sensitive enough to possibly cause some excess slippage. By coincidence, I happened across a SC document just a few minutes ago on my PC and has good information about automation. I have a funny feeling I had my assistant put it together from their documentation. I am hoping to migrate over at some point in the future.

I am sure that the codes can be migrated to work with Sierra Chart. I would love to hear someone do it. I love Tradestation for its capabilities to automate and customize indicators. I have created, modified dozens of indicators that I use regularly for both stocks and futures.
After all these years of learning, I find it very easy to automate a trading strategy. I will continue to use Tradestation for these features and the slippages are just the price we pay.
Cheers...

Slippage (out of the ordinary variety) often is because is trader is trying to do too much - with the symbol/market, trying to catch news related gyrations, micro timeframes or too complex a set of coding instructions. As well as maybe their workstation specs and/or internet connection are not up to the task.

1) How long have you been using TradeStation?
1 year.

2) What are your favorite features of TradeStation?
easy to setup, good amount of indicators

3) What are some must-have deal breaker features in TradeStation that you could not do without?
The matrix ladder.

4) Do you use TradeStation in simulation mode only, or do you place live trades with it?
Live only.

5) Are you a discretionary trader or an algorithmic trader? How does TradeStation help you with this?
Discretionary. I have access to all the charts, ladders and orderbooks I need.

6) How easy/hard was it for you to learn to use TradeStation?
Very easy.

7) How do you rate TradeStation's customer service/support, assuming you have needed to use it?
Varying. I've have very polite calls but also had emails that were not replied to.

8) Do you believe TradeStation is competitively priced?
Terribly priced. To be clear I am talking about the pricing they offer to international clients. I opened an account with Tradesestation US to beat this only get lumped in to the high pricing for their UK operation. This is the reason I am moving to IB.

9) How do you rate the community support that exists for TradeStation?
Have never used it. I do like their webinars with guests.

If you are a US client excellent go-to. Internation clients better to go somewhere like IB.
