Libya: civil war breaks out as Gaddafi mounts rearguard fight
Forces loyal to Col Muammar Gaddafi made good on threats to trigger a civil war in Libya on Wednesday night, by taking up positions across the capital, Tripoli and launching a rearguard fight against rebels in major cities.
Residents of parts of the capital were trapped in their homes as "thousands" of soldiers patrolled the streets accompanied by African mercenaries.
Tanks took up positions around public buildings including government offices, while sandbag defences were also being built.
"We will fight until death," a pro-Gaddafi soldier in his early 20s said outside a military compound close to Tripoli's Green Square, which had been cleared of demonstrators by yesterday morning.
"The country needs stability at a time like this, and this is what we are providing. The people are on our side."
Residents said bodies were still piling up in hospitals from the shootings of the previous two days.

Why can't this dictator simply exit the country with a few billion he looted and be done with it? Is it possible he is persona non grata and no country will take him? Rumour has it even his friend in Venezeula wants nothing to do with him.
Because the people of Lybia don't want Kadhafi to go. They love him. The only people leaving the country are part of the 1,5million foreign workers in Lybia.
They are leaving because they don't want to get killed in the crossfire. Those workers are not the rebels who are native Libyans.
It's a wonderful thing to see these strongmen, Princes, and dictators get their comeuppance. If they could provide enough food and decent jobs for their countrymen, this wouldn't be happening.
If Venezuela takes him, then it could lead to another capitalist country and strengthen the country possibly. Venezuela needs oil to be high to pay for their social programs. They want oil to stay high!
The only way strict socialist governments will work is either everyone has to be on the same playing sheet (the entire planet), or they must have valuable resources to pay for the social programs.
In my opinion, neither capitalism or socialism work in the strongest form and it is a nice mix of both that must work. Historically, I think humans are geared for both.
Wrong. People in Lybia who are born Lebanese get a monthly pay to do nothing. Kadhafi takes oil money but gives most of it to his people. They all buy luxury cars and do nothing. The 1,5 million people from 71 countries in Lybia are doing all the work. He transferred all the power to the people, all political decisions are being taken by local political boards, who are filled by the people, he has no political power in his country.
I'm against Kadhafi as he's an enemy to the West. But the West is using the riots in Tunesia and Egypt to finish Kadhafi and secure the 2 to 4% of world oil production. The western press is lying their ass off everyday about Lybia.
Why do the press/TV guys and politicians now refer to Libya military as Gaddafi soldiers ? This is the deceit and lies of the mindset. The reality is that the military that has engaged the rebels in Libya are Libya soldiers, airforce, etc.
Hey, why do the press/TV guys not refer to the military in Irag and Afghanista as the President's soldiers or the Prime Minister's military ? Or, why do they not refer to the oil they've been importing from Libya all these years, Gaddafi oil. Come on, stop the deceit !!!!!!!!!!
Maybe he doesn't need political power since he and his sons each have their own brigades and militia funded from the State owned oil fields. After all, guns, not words, kill and control people.
What do you think a Western country would do if there are rebels supported by their enemies taking by arms cities in ?
Exactly the same, bomb the place, and go in there and fight to regain the power.
This war in Lybia is not driven by the people over there, it's driven by us, the West. I'm not against it, but have the balls to say so honestly and don't give me that 'freedom people' crap.
