You are right, offsite hosting (VPS or colocation or whatever) is primarily for automated strategies.
While it is possible (depending on your internet connection) to run fullscreen charts over the internet with relatively low lag, I think you would have serious trouble running four monitors worth of charts.
I have a colocated server with dual 100mbit connections and a home connection that is 20mbit, and 3 24" monitors. I can run one fullscreen (1920x1200) chart from the server over RDP with relatively little lag (even with complicated graphics/transparency,etc). However, it gets a bit too slow if I extend the remote desktop to 2 or all 3 monitors.
Regarding buying your own equipment vs leasing.. leasing is probably the better option unless you have a need to have your own equipment, just due to the hassle involved in setting everything up and maintaining it. Generally you do get better deals on the bandwidth if you have your own equipment though.

That's good info - I have never used the remote desktop before and did not know what to expect in terms of performance -
Generally, usually any virtualized app doesn't match up to anything that is loaded/connected locally on the machine.
I also have a 20Mb internet connection max thru my provder - so your example specs would match exactly what I would have in terms of conection speed.
Looks like I've got to get my own beast - I just hope it's not too loud (fans)
So, basically everybody is monitoring an auto strat on maybe one or two screens without 10 - 20 charts loaded up. Guess that's why every internet lookup I did on VPS/dedicated servers only suggested auto program trading.

I have 2 clients that have automated strategies running on a collocated space in Chicago. If I get a few more people clients requesting the service, I plan on getting an ESX server and loading up VMs on them for my clients.
Thanks for the head's up. I'd rather use a recommended VPS than collocated servers for the strategies I'm hosting. They aren't super-needy algos and the VPS is much more economical than a collocated server.

Well, things took a completely different path -
I ended up getting my own equipment -
I've got two Lenovo S20 workstations -
Each have dual Matrox quad cards running 8 23" wide monitors
One workstation is for currency, the other commodities -
Currency account is with CFH Markets running MT4 -
Commodities account with Advantage Futures running CQG -
I'm happy, I can see it all, got a 60mb internet line and having no troubles getting fills -

I just beginning to look into VPS. I'm based in Oz so it's a long way to the exchange so it makes sense for autobots for me.
I run Ninja, Investor RT and Multicharts, could you give me your opinion on what system configuration I would require. I am looking at 64 bit Workstation Windows 7.
That is a lot of monitors.!
