A lot of good ideas in this thread. I was getting seriously concerned about what to tell people, once I start out full time. A few whom I have told, gave reactions like Now I have got some cool ideas. I have found that people don`t really give credence to anything that isn`t taught at university.. until you start puffing smoke from your BMW in their face. Since I neither have the BMW, as yet, nor do I have the temperament to "show" people, I think its best to answer something plausible and move on. I don`t need to justify myself to people.

When people ask me what I do for a living my stock answer is: "I am a professional slacker".
I kinda am really though cuz I only work 6 months a year and then can do anything, go anywhere in the world, at anytime I want for the other 6 months. Preferably with the hotttest chick I can get my hands on..LOL AND I don't even trade full time yet! COOL HUH

A funny video in which a cartoon-type character tries to explain to another one that he is an independant day trader, and not a gambler.

Lol, thanks. My favorite funny one is ">THE< goldman saks!"

I want to work at Goldman Sachs - YouTube

My guess is that most negative comments received by traders are based on ignorance.

Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large numbers....

My most common answers to "What do you do ...."

1. I'm a porn star....actually... it's just a "bit" part....

2. I don't do anything... and I don't start that until after lunch...

3. I haven't hit a lick at a snake since 1999....

4. Recruiting Manager for Hooter's ... Sorry...gotta go...so many applicants...so little time

5. I own a pole cleaning service for Strip Clubs...

6. I'm a "Go-Getter".... got the girlfriend a job... take her to work... and go get her....

7. I'm a contributing editor for futures.io (formerly BMT)...

8. I'm an Under Achievement Coach... if you're afraid of success... I teach you how to avoid it...

9. I hold seminars on how to make money holding seminars ...

10. I supply answers for day traders that don't want to admit they are day traders....

I'm just a simple man trading a simple plan.

My daddy always said, "Every day above ground is a good day!"

I learned from a retired man who used to manage a private equity fund. Even years after retirement and becoming a full time day trader, he continued to title himself as an "Private Equity Fund Manager" ... I asked him about it once, his reply was "they don't need to know the specific details of the fund. after all, it's private". Made perfect sense to me, so that's what use as my title. Every time I say it, I think of my dad. I found a card while cleaning out his desk with the title CIO Chief Investment Officer. Never got to ask him about that.

I've used this one a few times and I get some weird looks.

Either that or "I build financial models". The topic gets changed quickly.

Sent using photons and electrons

This advice resonated with me so much that wanted to share this with you - how many of my mornings from a young age started with 4:30am (say, right from age 12) and those have been the best mornings of my universe.

Whenever I broke my silence I had to pay something for it, mostly to myself, many times to others.

Trading is so satisfying in itself that now no other profession can ever do.

Market Psychology - Jesse Livermore Quotes

In the long run, patience counts more than any other single element except knowledge. The two really go hand in hand. Those who want to succeed through their investments should learn that simple truth.

I have found for me that there is true joy in the solitude and pure work I did during the early mornings, all my life. For, I always believed I was in search of bigger game, than just pleasure and social interaction. I wanted to be supreme in my endeavors in the market - this is what gave me real pleasure and satisfaction, Playing the game and winning the game.

Poise, patience, and silence are the emotional keywords for the top trader.

The final qualification is "silence." Keep your own silent counsel - keep your victories and your failures to yourself - learn from them both. Poise, patience, and silence are attributes that must be cultivated. These Virtues do not come automatically to the stock market trader.
Jesse Livermore

no, I don't tell people that I trade.

For me my trading is just an entertaining hobby, so I don't mention it when people ask what I do for a living.
I simply tell them "I'm a programmer - and I find binaries interesting"
Most people then think that is a reference to the binary numbers that computers deal with - and I just leave it at that.

Even if I was trading full-time for a living, I wouldn't talk much about it.
In that case I would probably say "I work with computers from home - and I find binaries interesting".

Many people find it "suspicious" if somebody can make money "out of thin air", by just watching some charts and drawing lines on them, buying/selling non-existant items with non-existant money.
Day-trading is considered "gambling", or "speculating", not "honest hard work".
